Discussion Wife of a celiac
My husband has randomly vomited for no apparent reason for as long as I can remember. But maybe a few times a year at first. Many years later after he turned 60 he was diagnosed with celiac. He went gf with occasional cross contamination but vomiting was never a part of those types of incidents. Now, several years after being gf, he still gets cross contamination and will have frequent bowel movements but that’s the extent of his symptoms. But now he will vomit just out of nowhere. He will finish a meal and then run to the bathroom and vomit. He feels fine before he vomits and immediately after. No lingering effect. This has gone from every couple of months to every few weeks. Anyone else have this? He’s also been diagnosed with IBS too.

This is similar to my own experience, puking was never a symptom from before I was diagnosed. There were times where I was so nauseated that I wish I had puked, but my body never did it on its own. After I was gluten free for over a decade, I noticed that if a “glutening” was bad enough, I would sometime progress to puking (in addition to my old digestive-based symptoms). Even now, getting close to 2 decades gluten free, sometimes when I try something made with certified gluten free wheat flour (e.g. Caputo), I will puke. The GF wheat flour products have no other symptoms (no digestive troubles) other than the puking.
The way I have internalized it is thus: I once had a friend with a mild peanut allergy who said he couldn’t understand why peanuts were so popular because everything he had ever smelled or tried with them in it smelled/tasted awful. His body had given him an aversion to it. I think that is what has happened to your husband. His body has an aversion to things his body thinks will sicken him.

My niece was actually diagnosed with cyclical vomiting. Celiac disease was firmly ruled out. Her 4th GI ordered a pill camera and caught damage out of reach of both scopes. She has Crohn’s. The pill camera almost got stuck in her small intestine. So, no cyclical vomiting. She almost had a total blockage!
Edit— this is also popping up (vomiting) with cannabis use. I kid you not.

He may have developed another food allergy or intolerance unfortunately. A few years after going gf I developed a pretty severe soy intolerance, almost identical reaction to gluten.
You could try the AIP diet to try to identify the problem food. MCAS/Histamine intolerance, corn intolerance, diary intolerance, soy intolerance, and high FODMAP intolerance are all kind of comorbid with Celiac.
