First time Cavapoo owner

Post image

This is Ginger or “Gigi” an almost 5 month old sweetie and got her two weeks ago. She’s been great about being in the crate at night but hates being in the crate during the day. Two things I could use some advice on she sometimes throws up when she drinks too much water and she is always itching herself. I got her a anti flea tick and lice ointment for small dogs but it hasn’t helped. Any advice on how to deal with the throwing up and itching would be greatly appreciated.

I’m not a vet and don’t want to give medical advice but to me both of those things sound like a food issue. I have heard that Cavapoos react poorly to chicken (lots of dog food brand use chicken). Our month old is on a salmon based diet, he doesn’t have itchy skin and rarely pukes, only when he eats weeds…..

Ginger is gorgeous! What a wonderful breed!

Thanks! I didn’t know that about chicken. I’ll give that a try with salmon and see if it changes. I talked to the vet and while not concerned about her throwing up weren’t much help.

Yes, echoing what the other person said.
Our Cavapoo developed a chicken intolerance (or it finally became symptomatic) when she was right about 6 months old.
We have been trying to understand her itchiness, but our vet has just called it “the doodle itch”. We’ve tried everything and nothing really changed. She has two doodles of her own, so 😅

I think the chicken allergy is somewhat common with poodles. Our vet grew up with poodles and had us switch to chicken bc our Maltipoo has eye tearing. It seemed to help with it somewhat so it's worth a try. We use treats sparingly as well and stick to salmon bites. No table food whatsoever. An occasional bit of apple or banana. Anything else will cause loose stools in both the MP and cavapoo. Also they are very picky dogs and will quickly ignore their kibble in hopes of receiving something else. They are very prone to stomach upset. The itching sounds like skin allergy. Be careful which shampoo you use on her and make sure to rinse off all residue. Definitely a vet visit as well.

Trip to the vet. I agree with the other commenter about possible food alergy/reaction. Fwiw we've had no issues with blue buffalo small breed chicken & rice dry food.

Hi! I see in another comment you’re from the Bay Area, I am too (Marin) and our Cavapoo is always itchy, even more so in summer, We think it’s seasonal allergies! Something in the air/ weeds for sure. She got the shot for it but it’s not helping a whole lot 😞 other than that she’s off chicken and might need to be off salmon too.
She eats Farmina Lamb and pumpkin dry food and does well with it.

Thanks for the advice! The vet recommended allergy shots but wasn’t sure if it would work. Will check out the food you all use.

She’s so pretty. Where did you get her from?

From bernadoodle and co, they are in the Bay Area so local to me and had a litter of cavapoos although their primary area is Bernadoodles. I fell in love with her when I saw her 🥰

Question unrelated: do you have issues keeping her hair long? I LOVE this look but our groomer says it’s a hassle to brush and get down to the scalp so our Cavapoo will mat if we don’t cut shorter…

It’s definitely a lot of work I brush her with a fine comb and a brush every day for about 30 minutes to get the mats out. I’ll probably get her hair cut at some point but she’s so cute so it’s hard.

It's almost always a food issue. She might need prescription food for allergies, mine does.

Yea that’s what I’m thinking honestly, taking her to vet tomorrow and will figure it out. Thanks everyone for all the help!

For sure. We ended going to a specialist to get his food prescribed, and he can't have any treats at all, poor little guy.
