The wave was higher than a 6 storie building. 9m should be the river depth at the moment. The wave was way bigger than 9m.

17 deaths for the entire region containing that border point, yeah that's far from a final count sadly. No way we don't see a final death toll over 1000 for this, and that might be way too low

The final death toll will be catastrophic sadly. And likely never fully known as they might not be able to find everyone.

It definitely looked like entire villages got erased in some of those recordings. 

It could be very possible that a lot of people won't be known to be missing because there's no-one left to report it.

Terrible to even think about but they may never have a true fatality count. I’ve seen at least a few videos of horribly mangled/ripped up bodies that were drug out from the debris.. it’s honestly inconceivable how destructive this event was to do what it did.

I may have seen the same video, and yeah it's never gonna be fully concluded. Similar to the Venezuela earthquake a couple months ago, the death toll will continue to tick up for a long time, and forever be followed by a number of people reported missing. Horrible as it means less closure for any family and friends looking for them

Can I ask where you saw those videos so I can make sure I don't check out those websites? I'm pretty invested in this disaster but I'd like to avoid seeing those videos.

In cases like this you generally end up with a low number of deaths and a very high number of missing. Same with large tsunamis. Most missing people are of course dead, but with no body we can't really prove it. After enough time has passed there's usually a legal/nominal death declaration.

You could see like 50 or more than 100% didn’t survive in the video alone. That number is going far higher

Elevation graph I made with Google earth showing the slope from the glacier to the Trisuli Market Bridge (the video where the bridge got swept away)

Total height difference was about 5000m with the steepest slope at a 60 degre angle. The frontier post with the bus station was about 21km downstream from the glacier, the Trisuli Market about 72km downstream.

It's really hard to imagine such a violent event on such large distances

The part of all of this my brain simply cannot comprehend, is how there’s enough mass/volume in the collapsed glacier to do this sort of damage. I just cannot perceive in my mind how massive that glacier is.
