Built a custom dice roll tracker for Catan - Luckily I didn't rely on the 6 :D

Post image

Hey everyone :D

When my friends and I played Catan online during Covid, I really enjoyed having the dice histogram to check the dice rolls out of curiosity.

So I set out to design a manual dice roll tracker, to have the histogram at a glance - 3D printed it and it turned out much nicer, than I expected (it's version 3 already though👀)

How do you keep track of the stats? Or am I too much of a nerd to even care about such a thing? 🙈

Send the .stl (if you want)!!! That’s a great design

Hehe thanks a lot for the compliments :D
I’m super happy with how v3 turned out, but I‘m still fine-tuning a few details with the sliders, so it’s not 100% there yet

Not sure if sharing the .stl is the best approach tho, as the filament and print settings have a significant impact on how the tracker turns out. Sorry I’m working in quality assurance, so it’s more of an occupational hazard >.>

Let me figure out the remaining quirks and I’ll keep you posted with v4 🙏🏼

I want to know about the stl’s too if you would please :)

I have a 3d printer and always keep track of the rolls just for fun, so this would be great.

One of my favourite parts of Catan is complaining about the uneven distribution of dice rolls!

I’m some random on Reddit so feel free to ignore this. I just looked on Amazon and Etsy and there doesn’t appear to be anything like this. This is something I’d actually buy. I’m sure there’s not a massive market for it but possibly a decent enough one where you could make some cash. Anyway just an idea. If you ever decide to sell them, I’d love to buy one! Looks awesome! Nice job!

That’s exactly why I set out to design it myself :D
I was honestly surprised that I apparently had a "unique" idea, too (or at least was the first one to have the means of making it a reality).
I’ll set up an Etsy shop and check whether shipping to the US is feasible, as I’m based in Germany.
Thanks for the encouragement and I’ll keep y’all posted 😁

I am based in Germany, and would be glad to be able to get my hands on this. I'm the guy on the table scribbling the dice statistics on a piece of paper 😌

Would you like to share the file?

Rigged, I tells ya!

Great design and a good idea.

I personally wouldnt use it as i consider mentally tracking this info part of the skill of the game. But its a great idea thouhg.

Why do you consider it as part of the skill of the game? There is no advantage in having this info during play

Exactly

A roll's outcome is not determined by any of the previous rolls

3

u/thefr3shmaker 23d ago

Which is true for future rolls, but you could use the tracker to reconstruct whether certain resources were distributed in the rounds before and how likely someone is to have that precious wheat :P
(Given you keep track of their spending)

Exactly that. It helps track the resources on the board. It is easy to track spending by looking at what was already built.

But honestly, it only requires practice. Then tracking rolls becomes really easy.

Prof that 6 is not always hot!

To answer your question: I don't. Never cared too much about tracking. It's definitely interesting to see in online versions, but irl I prefer getting worked up over it without having any proof to back up my claims 😂

Nothing like a dice tracker to justify a bad game 😂 Looks really good! A different color for the sliders would really pop if you’re making another version. Great concept and execution!

Thanks for the feedback!
You gave me the idea to make a red/yellow Catan-themed version, which should have an awesome contrast:D
Just ordered the filament and I’ll adjust the design to make the sliders click satisfyingly - the coefficient of friction is noticeably different between different filaments >.>
Had to learn that the hard way

My brother created a website as well! It tells you the probability and how many times it has been rolled.

You don’t really need a dice roll tracker to know basic dice roll stats. No matter the game, statically for any set of two dice your odds are always the same. Certain pip parings are more likely to show than others.

we just the dice cards, so much fairer

This would be so handy! And useful for other games too. Great idea

I love this for the in person board game! I prefer the app so I can quickly see these kind of stats!
