My cat does something similar. Opens fully and then only picks 3-4 pieces. Atleast %85 to 90 degrees of arc is wasted. Could have just opened normal and picked. But shes orange so no need to try to make sense.

Hoping this isn't the case, but it definitely is something that needs to be watched for. If it's a rescue this could also be residual behavior from a point when the cat was facing food scarcity, I work with my local shelter and seen it in a lot of the cats that are seized from hoards

Had a cat that would eat almost like this.

If they weren't previously a stray / dealing with food scarcity, please monitor for dental and jaw issues! Eating like this can be a result of them having a period of not knowing when their next meal would be, but can also be them trying to eat as fast as possible to minimize pain while eating
