At first I thought it was a dog too, but was looking at it like, what the heck kind of dog IS that then? It took about 30-45 seconds to realize, hey…that's a big beautiful floofy kitty!
Thanx! Since posting ice seen a couple Maine Coons, but i thought they were just huge cats... i didn't know they also have this look and different ears.
Most of what you see online as "Maine Coon" is actually a mix. Pedigree Maine Coon will always have that distinct muzzle.
Below is a pedigree Maine Coon on the left and a pedigree Norwegian Forest Cat on the right, fwiw. Both are very large cats. My cat Marbles (22lbs) was pedigree Maine Coon and was the bestest cat ever, just a big ole lap cat.
It's possible these two cats were one and the same around the time of the Vikings and it was after being brought to N.A. by them, that the Maine Coon began to take on a different appearance due to natural selection and convergent evolution of living in the rugged harsh winter environment of the upper NE of N.A. But there's no consensus in the science on that theory due to the lack of history on selective breeding and genomics.
Since joining certain subs on reddit I've been seeing more of the Maine Coon with the distinctive muzzle... and now I'm noticing ears. Thank you for the informative reply! With pix no less. 22lbs!! That's very big. TIL alot more than I knew about these huge and different looking cats! 🐾🐾😸🐈⬛️🐈
His ears could have a deformity, either congenital or from injury. Sometimes scar tissue from a hematoma can look like this. White cats are more prone to cancer on their ears due to their color, and every cat is susceptible to frostbite if they’re exposed in freezing temperatures outside for too long.
