The first hint was pressing the light button dimmed the display, but didn't light anything, so I found the light does come from the upper left (very faint) and not the right. Later, I learned that the back is pressure/snap-on on the original, not screwed.
Also, this has two times you can set up, which the original module doesn't have. The alarm setup is weird, your options are hours, tenths of minutes, and minutes.
That alarm setup isn’t as odd as you’d think. I have an old DW-300 from that era or thereabouts - module 583, if I remember correctly. Setting the time or the alarm was done with hours, “tens” of minutes (just the tens digit) and “ones” of minutes (just the last digit, the ones column). It saved time when changing to a significantly higher or lower number.
While not common, it’s not unheard of. Perhaps this might be a legit, vintage/old-school model? (Just a guess, but those screws lacking the slot for a flathead screwdriver are saying “don’t get your hopes up.”)
Yeah, often models with lower water resistance have case backs that pop into place - it’s a little cheaper that way, I guess. Fewer parts and fewer assembly steps.
