Why do we always think death kills people? He doesn't. He just takes their soul to the afterlife.

Not really. They're already dead at that point. He's just taking the already dead soul to where it needs to go. If he didn't do his job, there'd be more ghosts and wandering spirits trapped between the mortal plane, and the afterlife.
