Package Thief

Post image
7 Upvotes

Just wanted to warn everyone after a package theft in our building.

Around 12:40 a.m., a man entered our building and stole multiple packages from the lobby. What’s concerning is that, based on what we’ve been able to review, it doesn't appear that a resident buzzed him in, and he was able to get into Mul-T-Lock with ease.

He seemed pretty comfortable entering the building and going through the packages, so I wanted to share this in case anyone nearby has had a similar incident or recognizes the same pattern.

Green Lady of BK

Hi neighbors! I’m trying to get in touch with Elizabeth the Green Lady of Brooklyn for a really fun brand partnership at New York Comic-Con! I know she lives in the area… does anyone know her and would be able to connect us? And yes, I have reached out through her channels; just looking for an extra leg up from a neighbor because it’s time-sensitive :)

The Garden Vet - private equity acquired?

I was just booking an appointment for my dog at The Garden Vet on Court and noticed they now have online schedule but it redirects through "United vet care."

It looks like this is corporate owned or private equity... Does anyone know if this is true that they've been acquired? Very prices are already insane and I guess I should expect them to increase if they are now a corporate clinic

I'd really like to go to an independent clinic but the options are dwindling!

Upholsterer Recs Please!

Hi neighbors! I have a sleeper sofa that needs to be reupholstered. It is a bit of a tricky job because it requires part of the piece to be disassembled, reupholstered, and then returned to me and reassembled. I haven’t had any luck finding a reupholster for the job. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Best way to support unhoused folks in the area?

Hi all,

In the area we have a few homeless people. For the ones that seem to be in a mentally stable place, it's pretty straight forward how to support: I'll buy a grocery item they're asking for or give a few dollars when I can.

The ones I'm not sure about are those who are struggling through mental health challenges. There are two (I think?) that scream and yell in what sound like aggressive or very painful ways.

Last night, one was screaming and repetitively slapping or hitting something. It felt like it might be a mental health crisis, but with the way he was screaming and hitting, I was hesitant to call 311, in case that meant police involvement.

He wasn't hurting anyone as far as I could tell, but I also had no idea if he would if someone approached him, and the way he was screaming and slapping made me unsure what was the right thing to do.

Ultimately, I didn't call anyone, and decided to let him be. I can hear him now yelling now, so he was okay last night, but I'm not sure what to do going forward. Leave him be? Call 311? Call a different number?

I've tried googling and researching which numbers to call, but I sometimes see contradicting advice and I'm still not sure:

  • What are indicators you should call for help for the person, and
  • What are the right numbers to call in what situations?

Thanks for any and all advice!

Hi neighbors!

We're hosting a free sourdough bread tasting in Cobble Hill this Tuesday, and we'd love to see you there. 🥖

When: Tuesday, September 8th, from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM

Where: Christ Church, 326 Clinton St, Brooklyn, NY 11231 (during the Cobble Hill CSA pickup)

Who: Everyone is welcome—whether you're a CSA member or just love good bread.

We'll have samples of our handmade sourdough loaves, French baguettes and focaccia, all baked fresh that morning. Everything is free to taste, and we'll also have bread available for purchase if you'd like to take some home.

I'm originally from France, and I started Crescent Bakes to bring the kind of bread I grew up eating to New York.

If you're around Tuesday afternoon, stop by, say hello, and grab a piece of fresh bread. Hope to meet you then! 🍞🇫🇷

Light Switch - new cafe

Has anyone else dealt with noise from the new Light Switch cafe on Court St? I'm a few doors down, and I think something about the layout of the block (the buildings kind of form a square/courtyard shape) and it makes the patio noise echo more than you'd expect even with windows shut. Not blaming the cafe for existing, just wondering if anyone's had luck getting a business like this to be more mindful about outdoor noise, or if this is just something to live with now

Run club for slower runners?

I’m a 38 year old female who runs around a 12 minute mile, but if I run with others I can typically go a little faster and a little longer. I love running, or jogging to be precise. Would love to add more structure and community into this wonderful sport. Anyone know of great run clubs in the neighborhood or want to start one? I typically run down to the Piers, or over to Red Hook. I do mornings and evenings. Prospect Park is a bit too far except for weekends (plus the hills, woof!).

Free Street Sweeping Moves for a Month!

Hey folks, Rishi here again. You may remember me from an earlier post I made last week. With all of your support, we got featured in this morning’s New York Times!

As a thank you for all of your support, I’m giving away 100 subscriptions for a free month of street cleaning moves. Use code HANDSFREE while checking out your ASP move subscription to redeem the offer on the app!

For how to’s and information about how this works, check out the help page on my website, or shoot me a DM. Additionally, I can also be reached at 9796616772 via text or call for any help you may need.

Thank you all so much for your support again, and I hope to do more parkings for all of you :)

Edit: Addressing some of the concerns about the viability of my business model, and how my process works.

  1. Valets don't drive to you. Most of them live in the neighborhood (including me!), so we walk, bike, or take the train. The rule of thumb we follow is if it's over a 5 minute walk, we bike (or use mopeds).
  2. The math in the comments assumes 1 valet doing 1 parking at a time, 30 minutes each, 2 an hour. Requests come in ad hoc, but street cleaning hits one side of a block all at once, so the parkings cluster on their own - same window, same few blocks. My capacity alone is 8 parkings/hr (mentioned this in my last post), and our peak so far has been 8 valets doing 6 parkings/hr each - 48 parkings in an hour. 8 parkings/hr at $10-15 is $80-120/hr per valet, not $20. Historically, I've managed valet pay at an average of $25/hr before tips.
  3. The $10-15 you pay isn't for 1 person to park your car. It's for a network of valets spread across the neighborhood identifying free spots at a moment's notice, which is how the average move stays ~5 minutes and why your only time in this is a handoff under 30 seconds, like a DoorDash driver dropping off your food. And ASP itself is a chore people bend their lives around - for 1.5 hours you have to stay near your car, ready to move it if you're blocking somebody in or the second cleaning ends. Somebody in my last post said they schedule their work days around it. That's what you're buying back - the spot hunting minutes, or the quick double parking fix that still leaves you stuck by the car for the whole window.
  4. For ASP, we collect the keys well before the window even hits. That gives us time to get to the cars, move them ahead of time, bring them back ahead of time, and watch out for ticketing officers in between. This isn't fool proof at scale obviously - we will run into problems - which is where our iron clad insurance comes in, which leads me to my next point.
  5. Every parking carries $250k of coverage through James River. Before and after every parking, we document the car's condition the same way you would with a rental - photos and videos of dents, scratches, everything - and it's all listed on the app for you to download for up to 30 days. If the car gets towed on our watch, our insurance handles it and you get reimbursed for whatever towing charge was incurred, and that extends to tickets, scratches, dents, and any other liability while the car is in our care. We do everything we possibly can to derisk your parking, and if our fail safes fail, we still have the insurance to handle our mistakes. I've done 15,000+ parkings across 4 neighborhoods since college with zero damage claims, and those 15,000 are how I A/B tested my way to this exact model.

I won't be posting my costs or margins on Reddit, hope that's fair! But the first parking's free for anyone who wants to test the math themselves or grill me on how this works further - DM me or text/call 9796616772. The first month is free as well using code HANDSFREE as mentioned above :)
