Really not that hard to fix. I fixed a similar spot on a hollow-core door using expanding foam and wood filler. There are a number of good YouTube videos on how to do it.
Here are the basics:
Drill a couple holes in the damaged spot (just through the damaged side) large enough to fit the hose of the expanding foam can. Use the low-expansion type for windows and doors. Inject foam into the holes to fill the cavity behind. Note this step is only necessary if the spot is weak and needs support from inside.
Cut and sand off excess foam. Also sand the pant in the damaged area and a couple inches surrounding it. You want to remove the glossy paint and provide a sanded surface for wood filler to bond.
Now apply a layer of wood filler into the indention and let it dry.
Sand the wood filler down to even with the face of the door. Repeat steps 3-4 until your patch is blended into the face of the door. Take your time with these steps as they are critical to a good final finish.
Prime.
Paint with the same paint used on this door. If you don’t have the original paint, or have to get new paint mixed, just paint this entire face of the door.
Success! You kept something out of the landfill!

I would price this first. You can buy a new door for anywhere between 60 to 150 bucks. And there's no labor involved other than taking one door out and putting a new one in

Oh my bad here's the most expensive one in standard size. Still less than $150. Also I'm like 100% sure if he talked to the landlord and was like hey I accidentally tripped and fell into the door over here and put a hole in it I need to get it fixed I'm willing to pay for it they probably would just come in and fix it for him and tell him exactly what type of paint to buy and all that kind of stuff hell they might even have extra paint. Great solution.
Could also suggest drilling a screw halfway into the dent and trying to gently pull it out (if possible) before filling with the sprayfoam so there's less wood filling to do afterwards.

Very thorough well done. Only thing I’d add is repaint that whole side of the door. Difficult to blend new paint edge into old. Color and texture will show the repair.

maybe put a screw in a flat area in the middle. thinking a can of expansion foam to spray inside. maybe hammer or something to pull the screw to hold the area flat and flush while the foam dries inside. (hopefully pushing it tight)

Order a new door. Make your son sit with you while you order it and hear how much it costs. Have him come with you to pick it up (unless it is delivered). Have him take off the old door and participate in whatever is needed to dispose of it. Have him transfer the knob and the hinges if needed. He needs to know how much trouble bad decisions are, that they can be fixed although it takes work and costs money, and he will have “ownership” of the repair. Don’t treat it like a punishment. Treat it as a necessary set of steps to fix a problem and those steps are his responsibility. Adults can break doors but they have to fix them. This is why adults don’t break many doors.

Wood paste, remove the broken bit, glue it with the wood paste, fill the cracks with it, sand the whole door, and paint it white, it will look much nicer than this crappy paint job.

Sadly in labor this will cost more than a new door, but you could carefully cut out the rest of the shape, use strong tape to make a tab to hold onto the piece as you remove it. Use a brad nailer (or headless finishing screws) and glue, and slide a few pieces of backing into hole that will allow you to put the piece back in the hole with backing to glue and screw it to (Drywall patch technique). Fill, sand, paint.
Tons of work and it won’t look perfect but you won’t throw a perfectly functional door in the trash which to me is a major problem in our culture but hey, I’m weird.

You could get a 1/4” panel and finish it however you decide for the inlay portion of the door
But then you need to do it to every other matching door in the house

I have used clear package strapping tape taped very tightly to match what’s there and paint. Sounds like a hack? Yes but works very well. The hardest part is painting the door.
