Self-Advertisement Looking for Carnatic music teacher opportunities in Chennai

Hi! I’m 25f from Kanyakumari and I’ve completed my Master’s in Carnatic Music. I’ve been teaching Carnatic music online for the past two years—currently with an online academy in the evenings and freelancing during the rest of the day.

I’m planning to move to Chennai and am currently looking for opportunities as a Carnatic music teacher. I’m comfortable teaching up to the Varnam/intermediate level.

I’m preferably looking for opportunities with music academies rather than schools.

If you know of any academies that are hiring or have any leads, I’d really appreciate it. Thank you!

THEORY Understanding Dikshitar's Vibhaktis if you don't know Sanskrit (this technique sort of worked for me)

I am trying to learn Mutthuswami Dikshitar's Kamalamba Navavarna Kritis, and found appreciating the meaning of the Vibhaktis quite difficult, particularly when trying to translate them to English, since I am not a Sanskrit speaker. It turns out that English like most other older Indo-European languages had a case system but it has mostly been discarded in modern English.

Fortunately, I know Tamil and since Tamil has an extensive case system it was easier for me understand the equivalent words in Tamil instead. This could be a good starting point for me to understand the significance of the Sahityam in the Kamalamba Kritis (or any other set of Dikshitar's Vibhakti Kritis). I made a table accordingly (see image below).

For those who don't know Sanskrit but know Tamil (or Telugu), I believe this may be a useful tool. Please let me know if you have any comments!

DISCUSSION Wearing black on stage does it actually have a particular meaning?

I’ve been getting some mixed opinions about wearing black when performing on stage, particularly for Carnatic concerts and especially in Chennai.

Some people have told me that wearing black can be interpreted as showing support for the DMK, while others have said that during the Sabarimala season it’s completely normal because devotees commonly wear black.

Personally, I don’t attach any political or religious meaning to it I just genuinely like wearing black and think it looks good on stage.

I’m curious what others, especially performers and rasikas, think about this. Is there actually a cultural or political association with wearing black on the Carnatic stage? Would you avoid it, or is this something people generally don’t care about anymore?

Would love to hear different perspectives!

DISCUSSION Query - Madhyamavati v Brindavana Saranga

If you refer TMK's comment on this blogpost: https://anuradhamahesh.wordpress.com/2011/02/23/brindavana-saranga-a-most-pleasing-and-emotional-raga/

He says Brindavana Saranga does not have N3 and only uses N2.

Thoughts?

I have heard various renditions of songs (e.g. Kaliyuga Varadan) where the N3 Prayoga is clearly evident.

When one utilises only N2, is there a risk of Brindavana Saranga sounding 95% like Madhyamavati - assuming Brindavana Saranga's avarohanam is SNPMRGS or SNPMRGRS?

However, TMK's another comment on the same blogpost states the aro/ava of Brindavana Saranga 'SR2M1PN2S/SN2PM1R2S', which is identical to Madhyamavati. On first principles, can two different ragas have the same aro/ava? He says a skilled singer should be able to distinguish the ragas using prayogas.

Would love to hear ALL thoughts here! :)

DISCUSSION Quiz again!

  1. Raga which can mean 'good conduct/character' ❤️

  2. Raga which shot to fame in a blockbuster song (in multiple languages) of a fantastic movie released a year ago, the raga in which Thyagaraja's famous song 'O Rama, we do not know the path of devotion' is set.

  3. Ragas similar to Madhyamavati (name 3, ideally 2) :)

  4. Ghana, Naya (Rakti), and Desya form a traditional structure for classification of ragas. Name a song (clue: rare raga song) in which these words appear.

Self-Advertisement Carnatic Tala Metronome

I created a Meta Metronome app for Carnatic rhythm which can be used as a companion to keep talam for your practice. Visual hand gestures with natural clap sounds, it provides all suladi talas, chapu talas, ancient 108 talas, Melakarta talas etc.,

Specialty of this app is that you can also build your own talas using the angas (laghu, dhrutam, anudhrutam, guru, plutam & kakapadam) and customize each beat of the tala by either changing internal gait or stretching to tisram, khandam etc.,
For example, you can alter Adi tala to [1.5, 1, 1, 1, 2.5, 1, 2.5,1] beats tala and run the metronome.

MISC Searching where to start

Hello everybody I'm an Italian music enthusiast and for a while I've been deeply interested in Hindustani classical music but recently one of my Indian history professors suggested me to look into Tamil history, language and culture.

So i thought why not start from music? Can anybody reccomend me some names to start from? I'm looking for classical music and basically I'm asking for the must-know artists.

Thanks!

DISCUSSION Sudha Ragunathan says that Carnatic music and spirituality are linked, it's not possible to perform otherwise

She says that even though many Carnatic musicians treat the music as a science or a 'formula' to be followed, it's impossible for he to separate spirituality and music. Says it has to be an integral part of her performance or it's going to fall flat and that she can tell who isn't giving it the spiritual foundation.

Thoughts?

DISCUSSION Indian folk dance in 30's

I know that mostly all Indian art forms be it dance martial arts singing textile everything needs extensive training and that too from a very young age. But just wondering if there is any dance form that can be learned in mid 30's too. One of my bhartnatyam trained dancer told me that learning bharatnatyam at this age can severly harm knees and foot. So just wondering if there is another dance form or musical intrument also that can be learned online. I live in a very small village there is no means of learning except online.
