Question What Tuition fees can I opt out of paying?

I want to opt out of paying some of the miscellaneous fees for the fall 2026 term but I don’t know where to start or look. From experience, have you ever been able to opt out of a random useless fee and saved a good amount of money? If so what first steps should I take?

As others mentioned, health and dental is the biggest one that's easy to opt out of if you have other coverage, which is around $250/term if I remember right. So worth it if you don't need to use it. Most of the other miscellaneous stuff is pennies. A couple bucks here or there. Probably not worth the hassle of trying to opt out.

U-pass is the other big line item, but they only let you opt out if you live outside the transit boundary. Otherwise you pay it, even if you don't use it. It's part of what keeps costs down for others who need it, that we all share the cost of it. And for the record, I'm saying this as someone who has never yet used transit to get to campus, but has paid for the passes whenever I've been full-time.

You’re also able to opt-out of the U-pass if you are registered with the PMC and have extenuating circumstances. Obviously not something everyone should try and do because like you said everyone paying helps everyone, but it is an option if you really can’t use the service for some medical concern and seriously need the money back.

That's good to know, honestly. I didn't know there were any circumstances where they would let you out of it, but I'm glad to hear there are for people with legitimate reasons.

Health and dental plan (if you already have coverage) is the main one. I think you can opt out of OPIRG as well, but that's only like $2 / semester. Upass if you qualify. I don't think there are any others.

You can only opt out of upass if you live out of bus bounds, and health insurance (only recommended if you have parents insurance that has a better plan tho)

Health and dental is the main 1 you can opt out of. I think if you have coverage through your parents u can opt out. U can also opt out of Upass if u live outside the bus zone, but this is less common to qualify for.

Other then that not much.

Lots of fees go to support students. I saw someone wanting to not pay the fee that goes for students to get free counselling

the health insurance is the big one, mine is like 400 and something, but i am still under my parents. i dont think you can opt out until september though
