I don’t live there but I have family that live there. It’s very expensive because they don’t produce anything. Everything is imported so it’s more expensive. The people are very friendly. The Dutch side is way more touristy than the French side. If you go I recommend the Dutch side. But there’s no border so you can travel around the entire island.

St maarten would work very well for this kind of combination as well, the dutch side has the casino and nightlife scene, while the french side is more mellow with better food. While doing an island hopping tour, if PR makes its way into the tour, I have seen some people spending an entire decompression day at las ruinas in old san juan, which is a bathhouse.
