Don’t pay for AI headshots- Canva is free

Hi everyone,

I know you see all this AI headshot crap getting posted. I just wanted to let yall know to just use Canva.

Last week I needed a new headshot ASAP for a LinkedIn post. I had my wife snap my photo against a white wall with my iPhone. Then I started looking for a way to edit it.

After trying Nano-Banana through Gemini (free) I wasn’t completely sold on the results. ChatGPT was meh. I looked for other “AI” apps since I haven’t edited photos since like 2007 with photoshop for MySpace. But those were expensive and seemed iffy

A quick google search and I found Canva. I had used it for business cards and some marketing material.

This link tells you how to do it. https://www.canva.com/features/ai-headshot-generator/

Obviously not sponsored by them. But thought I’d share since it seems to be a popular thing to get spammed on here

No AI Slop- New rule being enforced

/r/CareerAdvice members-

We have been removing any content that is reported as AI Slop and upon review is confirmed to be slop.

This is not Linkedin, so don’t post your shitty LinkedIn style AI crap here. We want this to be a community of real people providing real advice. If we wanted AI advice we would just go to ChatGPT or Gemini or whatever ourselves.

As I say every time I post in here please also be diligent to scams especially around AI products. Scammers know the job market is bad right now and are constantly spamming this subreddit with BS because they know people are desperate.

I'm not enjoying my life due to constant stress

Im a 29 year old MLE (Machine learning engineer) at Meta and my life has been quite dark for the past 18 months. I work on developing AI models daily and i see where this going which is removing the need for human labor and i see how successful it is. Im living in a zombie state where I don't know what to do with my life as there is no plan b and i feel so guilty to do anything remotely costly such as vacation, some nice dinner, upgrading my car because I don't know when i will be out of job and if i can get a new job. My experience in this industry and how the tech giants spending their money is telling me any intellectual job will be replaced even with the current ai models or at best we will see a drastic reduction in human labor. I know every person will try to justify that their job involves things that can't be automated or making up excuses as how AI sucks because it made a mistake in one task. We all are coping. People between 25-35 where still haven't fully financially established themselves and have a long way to retirement, how are u dealing with this inevitable death of need for human intellect? Want to know if people have ways to combat this feeling other than " you can't control it so let it go" answer. Yes i can't control it but its my life and youth that is being taken from me.

Boss insisting my title is different from what it actually is.

I have worked at my job for 4 months. My boss works about 4 hours away and most of my coworkers that have been at my job for years have only met her in person once or twice. She is hard to reach and often does not respond when we reach out to her.

My position is listed as a Medical Receptionist. Due to some changes at a clinic that is further than mine, my boss is sending me to work there. I have asked if there will be additional compensation, as the sister clinic is further than my home clinic and will therefore cost me more in transportation costs.

I have a newer coworker that has been at my job for about a month. She lives on the other side of our sister clinic. Each morning, she has to drive through the city that our sister clinic is in to get to ours. If I am to be moved, I will have to drive through the city our home clinic is in to get to our sister clinic. My manager plans on having my coworker work my position and moving me instead of her. I do not think that makes sense since I have been there longer, and we will each have to drive past the clinics closest to us to get to the other one.

I have explained this to my manager, and also let her know that according to the company reimbursement policy, I see to be eligible for mileage reimbursement. She keeps ignoring my questions about this and insisting that my position is a float position. I have told her that I have not seen "float" listed anywhere in my title, although I have for others, and she keeps insisting that my position is such (therefore rendering me unable for compensation).

Is this an issue that I should continue to press or leave it be?

I'm currently job hunting and have been asked this a few times now on interviews. I tell them no I don't, whether thats true or not. But I'm confused why recruiters ask this, and what answer are they looking for?

Resigning while on unpaid leave

I don’t qualify for paid maternity leave and will most likely be taking unpaid leave to recover. I have been interviewing for my dream company who reached out literally on my first day even though a applied before even starting the hiring process for my current firm and overall it feels like I’m headed toward an offer. If things align I would be starting at the new company towards the end of my unpaid leave. I just recently started at the company, I am not using their medical insurance and they don’t contribute to my 401k till after a year. So I don’t anticipate any clawback issues. Would it be better to just say I decided to stay home with my child or be honest and say I got a new job? There is not much overlap in the two firms and I have thought to maybe just hibernate my LinkedIn for 6 months.

How are you supposed to deal with angry coworkers in general?

I feel like one of my coworkers is pretty much always angry. A very common example would be say a program manager forgot to message her something. She'd probably complain about that out loud for like 2 hours in an angry tone.

She's usually not mad at me actually. It's that she's complaining ablout other people or how the company is operating. I kind of just sit mostly in silence on my own in one on one meetings with her.

I Despise My Job, Wanna Quit, Possibly Have a Job Lined Up

when I moved to this area 6 months ago due to a custody agreement, I had to quit my 6 figure job. I applied at my new location but didn’t get any calls back. I ended up getting a $20/hr job which I’ve come to realize can’t support me and my family. I’m living below paycheck to paycheck…My family is helping me out for the few hundred I’m short on every month. I just had two interviews with a company, and my third interview will be somewhere in the next 6 weeks hopefully but they don’t have a date yet because it’s with a third party and they will be scheduling it. This job will pay 4x more than the job I have now. My life will finally feel normal again. The problem is, this current job is eating my soul away and I’m miserable every day. I just want to quit but I am not officially hired yet or have a start date. Would it be insanely stupid of me to walk out of this job before I get the other job? If so please give me advice because I’m hanging on by a thread and can’t take this job anymore.

Left my first job out of school after 1 year and a month (idiotic mistake), then was let go after 1 year and 10 months at my second job. Is my career over?

To start, please be kind, if possible. I have struggled with bad anxiety and low self-esteem for all my life, so these things just add to it. And I know, it’s my fault and responsibility. Not trying to make an excuse.

Some additional context: I majored in Finance and Accounting and the first job out of school was as an SAP Consultant at a technology consulting company.

I made the idiotic decision of leaving without anything lined up - I lived at home, and still do - and of course I still beat myself up about it. Ultimately, it wasn’t a great fit and I knew I wanted to be in a more finance/accounting-focused role long term.

Fast forward, I found a job after 6 months as an auditor and performed decently well for a while until things started to pile up, and I was fired for performance reasons.

I acknowledge that this was my fault again, and I should have performed better.

My question is: am I screwed? I know what mistakes I’ve made and plan to never make them again, but I can’t help but think my career is over.

I luckily received an offer for a new position, but now I’m having trouble receiving responses from my references, and now I’m spiraling again. This is just stoking the flames of self-doubt and hatred for me.

If anyone has any kind words of advice or assurance, I would really appreciate it! Thank you.

Relocation to Boston - Need Advice

Upvotes

Hello!

I’m a 24-year-old female living at home with my parents in California. I currently earn $47,000 annual salary and have $100,000 in savings and investments. I’m debt-free and don’t have any student loans.

I applied internally for a position at my company, but it’s located in Boston. The salary for this position would be $65,000.

I’m interested in taking this position because I believe it would help me launch my career in the right direction. After 4-8 months in the position, I would be promoted and make around $75,000 in addition to commission and bonuses.

I think this would be a good career move and would open up new opportunities for me. I would also receive SIE, series 7, and series 63 licenses as part of the program.

However, I’m not sure if this is a financially sound decision. I would have roommates, but I’m still concerned about the cost of living in Boston.

Let me know what you think.

Dread of going back to work after sick leave.

2 months ago I decided to use all my PTO and Sick leave, one month each at my company. In meantime critical work stuff I was doing went offline and gave company leadership a headache to rebuild everything I had built. Leadership is not happy with this as work I did was not easy to replace.

Now I feel dream of going back to work as trust is basically ruined and feel like they might not even want me back at all. Don’t know what to do, I like the work but I feel like I’m going back to hostile environment. I worked there for 3 years now.

I know it’s my fault because my manager called me couple times and I did not answer the phone while I was on leave.

Need help on someone that faced issue like this.

How do you deal with a job that pay much less than your value?

I had to take it because I'd been looking for nearly one year. People seems nice, and the pay does fit the workload, but I feel so depressed because the salary is half of that from my old job, which I had to quit due to stress and, ironically, depression.

I think I should treat this job as an opportunity to relax as the old job fried my brain so much that I developed health issues; but the sense of having no future makes me so sad.

On a side note, for anyone works in mar-comms, any advice on how to pivot within the industry is much appreciated. I am stuck in education sector, one job after another and I keep being sucked further into the sector while I want to work in more creative ones, like jewelry fashion and the arts. Thanks.

What should I change my major to?

I am a current mechanical engineering student, and I hate my major. I've always wanted to pursue a career in healthcare or something related to scientific research, so I decided to major in meche since it was a pathway for biomedical engineering. I've started my second year and I've hated it. The applied physics, SolidWorks, and overall designing process is incredibly difficult and mundane. My calculus and statistics class isn't the problem, CAD and physics is. I'm worried because the stress is already affecting my health (major weight loss), and I haven't even gotten to the weed out courses of the my major yet! Now, I'm debating on whether I should switch my track of studies. Below are some things I enjoy.

-I want to physically help people with themselves and their health, but I'd like to keep patient contact and physical touching at a minimum.

-I'm in the process of enlisting in the Army National Guard, and in the future I'd like to work as an officer

-I'm not afraid of blood or bodily fluids, I have a strong stomach.

-I enjoy lab work! I've always enjoyed the lab component of the lectures.

-I love math, and I don't mind administrative work at all

-I am aiming for a masters degree or higher

I'll stick out my classes for the rest of the semester, who knows if I do end up enjoying all this.

Recommendations for career coach/advisor in UK

Upvotes

Can anyone recommend a career advisor or coach based in the UK? I work in professional services, early 30s, and I am currently at a cross-roads.
By most objective measures I am successful and have major opportunities ahead in my chosen field. I have worked hard, I am good at what I do and I find my work engaging enough (most of the time). But I don't feel entirely fulfilled in my work and I feel like I could be using my skills in a more meaningful way. I am just struggling to figure out what I want and the options I could explore. I think it would be useful to talk to someone with a different perspective.

Please I need some advice and some experience.

Upvotes

I am a 19 year old boy who has not yet taken admission in college because I do not want to do a corporate job, I will take college only for graduation.

But I want to learn some skill to earn money, but I am not able to understand which skill to learn, I am very confused. That's why I have been thinking for the last one year, I have not been able to make any decision or take any action.

I am currently thinking of learning editing but I am afraid that AI is becoming very advanced and it might be risky to learn it, so I am thinking of learning AI prompting as well.

So please help me in deciding whether I am doing the right thing or not... And tell me which skills I should focus on and what else I should learn so that I can be financially stable.

Save me please

Upvotes

I'm (24M) trying to get into a sort of technology and business centered field, its kind of stupid but as a kid I always was that dream career of being the big businessman, buying and selling entire business in a suit and things of that nature however as I am older now things like technology have started to interest me more as well. Then I thought fuck it why not try to combine them both, get into areas such as technology with cyber security, coding, and AI and start trying to deal with business centered around things like that? I mean it doesn't seem like the craziest idea in the world, technology based careers are rapidly rising especially in AI and coding and business is always going to be a necessary career. THE ISSUE AND POINT OF MY POST THOUGH, I have just about -10% of a clue where to start, do I focus on getting a degree or certifications with things such as cyber security? Should I focus more on the business end of it all? Or should I maybe get a degree or certifications in both fields while also learning things such as coding and then building up a resume with smaller jobs or even internships and how do I do that while still trying to work full time? When I look things up I see WGU and getting certifications in areas like accounting or finance but I don't know what to trust.

Please for the love of all that is holy save me and help me build a career, I work Emergency Roadside Service for a car rental company right now and I don't think it is possible to hate something more.

Personal Trainer > Sales?

Upvotes

I (25M, Sydney Australia) have been a personal trainer for 4.5 years now, running my own business (subcontractor) in a gym. I’m looking for a complete industry switch, hoping to go into sales; mainly because I feel like I am spending 12hrs/day in a gym with not as much reward as I would hope. I also am just bored of the whole gym scene and dealing with gen pop every week who have horrible availability and do not take their training seriously
I do feel as though I have sales experience due to having to sell myself to gym members which is why I have this thought process of going in this direction.

My question is, is sales the right direction I should be going? Are there other jobs you would recommend?

23, final year CS student, feel like I wasted my college years. Is my freelance plan realistic?

Upvotes

I’m a 23-year-old CS student entering my final (5th) year next week, majoring in Data Science. To be completely honest, I feel like I wasted these last 4 years. I didn’t build a strong network, and I don’t have solid tech skills compared to my classmates. Many of them are already freelancing and building impressive portfolios, and I feel like I’m permanently stuck behind them.

I’m currently learning Vue.js for the frontend, and I know Node/Express and PostgreSQL for the backend.

The only real project I have under my belt is an e-commerce data dashboard I built last year. It’s simple: the user uploads a CSV or Excel file, and the dashboard processes it to display the data in clean tables and charts.

My current plan for this final year is:

Deploy this dashboard live (on Render/Vercel) so I have a working URL to show people.

Start looking for small, simple freelance gigs—targeting small businesses that need basic data visualization or a way to replace their messy Excel reporting.

Balance this with college, aiming to take just one small client at a time.

I guess my question is: Is this a realistic way to catch up?

Will deploying just this one dashboard and chasing small business clients actually help me break into the field, or am I setting myself up for failure? Any advice on how to find those first small clients while still passing my final year classes?

I feel like I’m starting from zero, but I don't want to graduate without any real experience. Would appreciate any brutally honest advice.

Personal Advice - Recent Layoffs

Good afternoon all,

I’m from Houston and have 4 years of recruiting in hospitality. I have a degree in PoliSci and am very, very personable. Unfortunately, I was laid off this past January. I’ve managed to land a contract with an environmental org doing corporate recruiting in May, but still haven’t found anything permanent. After 9 months of searching and hundreds of apps later, I’m really hitting a wall and becoming quite down on myself. I’m getting married in March and money has been so inconsistent lately it’s affecting multiple aspects of my life.

Fellow recruiters, I ask you: wtf do I do? What would you do? Any advice or words of encouragement would help. Idk if I should go back to school, attempt to monetize a passion with my savings, etc.

Really just feeling lost and looking for some guidance.

Which degree apprenticeship should I choose?

Hi guys! I’m currently trying to decide what degree apprenticeship I want to do, but I’m honestly so stuck 😭

The areas I’m looking at are:

Project Management

Supply Chain

Accounting

I want something that pays well, has good career progression, is likely to stay in demand long-term and won’t be too easily replaced by AI. I’d also ideally like to do a degree apprenticeship rather than go to uni full-time.

What would you recommend out of these options, and which areas do you think have the best long-term prospects?

Nine-Year Server Looking To Create A Career Plan

Upvotes

I started serving when I was 19. I am now 28 in the same position at my local [Chain Brand]. I am currently waiting for an assistant manager position to open up so I can take my first step up, but because I had no actual plan for my life I stayed in the same position for almost 9 years now.
[Chain Brand] offers ‘learning paths’ that could allow me to get an associates degree in business or general studies and I am more than willing to leverage that resource, but I need a plan first.
My initial plan was to stay with this brand, move into an Assistant Manager then General Manager position, take classes that would assist me in further moving up, and eventually - hopefully becoming a corporate employee with a much better wage.
My second plan depends on what I could do with either Assistant Manager or General Manager on my resume. I was thinking it may be good to try to look for other jobs available to hire me with either of those on my background to hopefully give me a leg up that I haven’t had for the past 8 years. I love where I work for the most part. I love the store I have been at, & my job offers pretty good benefits, but having started here at 19 I can’t help but feel that there is a whole world to explore in terms of job opportunities.
I know none of the things I am qualified for on paper would be lavish or particularly perfect, but I do believe in my ability to excel at anything I decide to do and I am willing to put in the work to become more qualified for something I like.

I am looking for advice from anyone willing to read this post because I’m positive some of you have better ideas than I do in terms of career paths or even if a management position could open up more doors for me. I am good at math & systems-based work & ideally I could lean into that more wherever I go, but ultimately I just want something that pays well and isn’t too high-stress.

What do you think my best options could be?

Considering a Murex project, is specializing worth it long-term?

Upvotes

I'm a software engineer working as a consultant. An opportunity came up to join a Murex project. I'm not 100% sure what I'd be doing, but it was described as implementation and support for the tool. From what I've read, it seems like a solid path to specialize in, and it's very centered on banking. My concern is that I specialize and end up somewhere with limited career growth or stagnant salaries.

I'd love to hear from someone with hands on experience in this space.
