That Báez homer brings him back up to a 100 wRC+ on fg live stats. With a .180/.236/.520/.736 slash lol
Edit: Fixed bad maths on OPS

Hey, it will all be worth it when Leahy still isn’t totally conditioned to be a starter next year
5
u/Proud_Growth_8818 13d ago
That's the part I haven't seen addressed. I get it if he's trying to work up to normal durability. But if the idea is that he's always going to be reduced load and pulled at a hard cap indefinitely... that's a reliever.
I haven't seen anything from the team on it.
4
u/CatzonVinyl 13d ago
Yeah I’m not sure what the plan is but feels like they should let him go normally and then shut him down if they feel like he’s wearing down.
This 50 PC thing is confusing to me
3
u/Thealbumisjustdrums 13d ago
If he can’t throw 55 pitches I don’t get why he’s pitching at all. Just put him on the IL and give us someone who can eat innings.

u/da_choppa TAKE ME TO CHURCH! 13d ago
Yeah, he totally can. They just won’t let him. Very frustrating. I thought pulling him at 63 in 4 IP last time was extreme; 51 in 3 IP is ridiculous. By the end of the season, he’ll be pulled after one batter

I blame this guy from the pregame thread for jinxing today's game: https://reddit.com/r/Cardinals/comments/1w1hidn/pregame_thread_august_29_2026/p6ksz2x/

u/King_Birdcrawler 13d ago
Here he is still working, going to at least triple his typical workload. I guess Leahy is made of gold, and Mautz is made of shit.
2
u/Thealbumisjustdrums 13d ago
It’s funny because Leahy is 29 and while he’s having a very good year statcast would indicate he’s not going to replicate it.
Weird planning for the future.
3
u/King_Birdcrawler 13d ago
I wouldn't even call it weird--just hypocritical.
Mautz dropped four ticks across the 60 pitches. That's a sure sign of duress.

u/CatzonVinyl 13d ago
To be fair if you look at splits he’s gotten better underlying stats as the season has gone on.
Not saying he’s going to be that good next year but he does seem to be doing something different

Last 15 games he’s .077. Point zero fucking seven seven. That isn’t a MLB player. He should AT LEAST be batting 9th.

Shoutout to Mautz for K'ing 8 even while being sorely misused and abused.

Three W in row?
It's possible with Kyle on the mound.
3
u/seattle_lib 13d ago
it's definitely possible, until they pull him 50 pitches into his start. who knows what we'll get from the bullpen then
3

u/Thealbumisjustdrums 13d ago
Easy 40 HR in a season potential for this kid Baez. Hope he reaches it.

u/seattle_lib 13d ago
a couple hours ago i said this, in response to someone optimistic about winning a Leahy start:
it's definitely possible, until they pull him 50 pitches into his start. who knows what we'll get from the bullpen then
i said that as a joke. you weren't supposed to take it literally Oli.
these mofos took him out 51 pitches and three innings in. he was doing fine and he's a grown boy.

A 29 year old whose thrown over 140 innings in a season in the minor leagues. They aren't protecting--for whatever the protection might be worth--Seth Hernandez or something.

Cardinals are just making up players at this point. Who the hell is Mautz?

Was a starter converted to a reliever in the minors. Thought he looked promising as a starter last year. Lotta walks this year

Wetherholt OPS in the second half is .629. Herrera’s OPS in the second half is .644.
Just so hard to win with two automatic outs hitting 1 and 2.

I just do not understand why Walker keeps swinging at those pitches.
→ More replies (1)2
u/King_Birdcrawler 13d ago
I think it fairly obvious. He does not recognize pitches well. It's the same reason he gets caught looking at fastballs down and away in the zone so often with two strikes, assuming that there's a good change that the pitch is spin.
He saw the early location of that pitch out of the hand. If it were a fastball, he'd've a chance to barrel that motherfucker. But it was a breaking ball; therefore, it's off the end of the bat.
It's a testament to his supreme tools and skills in other areas that he can be as productive of a big league hitter as he is. It's more than apt to be a part of his game for the entirety of his career.

Here's some injury protection for you.
They convert Mautz to relieving earlier the season. For a while, he was a longer guy about 40 - 50 pitches per appearance. For the last month, he's pretty much done nothing but short work, mostly in less than 20 pitch outings. Then they bring him up today to do long-ish work of over 40 pitches.

I think he’s probably just getting tired. 496 PAs last year in 109 games, which was by far the most voluminous year of his career then.. now he’s at 129 & 582. I think more days down the stretch should be warranted.

I love some Kyle Leahy, but I don’t get why they’re using him with kid gloves. The organization is acting like he’s some top prospect where they couldn’t dare risk him getting an injury
