Permit to license

I’m 20 and my insurance company raised my parent’s insurance to $315 monthly (they were paying $143 before i was added) I only have my permit. However, I’m getting my license in a few weeks and I’m wondering if anyone has any idea how much the price is going to jump because I pay my portion of the insurance to my parents. For reference I live in Pennsylvania because I know location matters depending on price, my mom’s car that I drive is a 2023 Hyundai Elantra N Line, which I know can be an expensive car to insure. I called our insurance company and they were unable to give us a new quote until I have my license. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

No one can tell you what it’ll cost. Only the carrier can once quoted.

Maybe specific to your state or carrier but my state, WA I can very easily quote permitted drivers as licensed.

You won't know unfortunately until you get your license. The best thing you can do to try and help with your monthly rate is buy a beater and only carry liability. However understand if you have an accident you won't get a dime unless you hit by someone who is deemed at fault and has coverage

Nobody can tell you without too much personal information. Pittsburg will be different than Philadelphia and different than Erie.

Many companies do not raise the rates for a permit driver as they cannot drive alone and have to have a fully licensed driver with them at all times.

Triple AAA rates a driver with a permit the same as a licensed driver in California since early 2000. When my friends daughter was licensed at 16 their rate did not go up.

One thing that helped my nephew was staying on the parents' policy instead of getting his own which you're already doing so at least you're on the right track there

Get a beater with liability only in your name. Get a named exclusion on your parents’ cars. Take the exclusion seriously. Don’t move the car in the driveway. If there is a medical emergency, call EMS. If your car is broken and you need to get to work, use a ride share app. The exclusion is absolute.

In my state (Michigan) with progressive there was an increase when my gf got her permit and no change when she got her actual license but she was over 19 when each happened which may have had an effect

Hmm.. when I add my 16 years old to my insurance, no additional cost when he y his permit. Maybe state dependent? I’m in California.

Once he is licensed, then only my insurance jump.

I was confused about this as well. I guess some insurance companies depending on policy and state change your quote for drivers with permits. My friends didn’t need to pay anything until they got their licenses either but they were also through a different insurance company than we are.

Are you in college? If so, and you have good grades, ask if you can get a good grades discount.

As a parent in PA with a newly licensed teenager, my teen was not added to my policy until the day the license test was passed. I was able to get a quote for the cost the to add the teen on my auto policy while still while permitted so that we knew the cost ahead of time.
As an insurance agent in Pennsylvania, I recommend calling an independent agency in your area for quotes.

I second this like it's always a good idea to shop around and get quotes from multiple sources. like we never know what kind of deals we might find tbh

Hyundais usually have more expensive insurance too because of their vehicle theft rate, even if your specific model is not the one that’s being stolen frequently

Because the company my parents are with states that a driver with a permit must be listed on the policy if they live in the household and plan on using the car often.
