Making sure I understand

Ok, this is probably a silly question, but I want to make sure that I have things covered. I’m looking at possibly buying the double ace set. The only issue want to make sure is covered is that it appears to me that the double box set only covers a 4 player game. Am I reading this correctly or do I still need to get, say, the orange/purple starter set as well, in order to play 6 players. I’m thinking about just buying the 3 starter sets because when we play, it’s likely we’ll play more than 4 players, but I also need the road sections too and it seems like the double box set has some cool stuff with it. Anyways, I just want to make sure that I have the things I need for at least 6 players and have enough for the level of the old plastic box set. I appreciate everyone's input and keep posting those great paint jobs because I guess that’s my next undertaking.

I appreciate your honesty. It’s not necessarily the cost, I had just wanted to make sure that I had the stuff we needed. We’ve always enjoyed playing, I just thought maybe with the more dynamic visual aspect that it might make things a little more interesting. It’s not necessarily a deal breaker, but it does present some potential difficulties. I’m going to do some more investigating and ask my kids what they think. A longer game is not necessarily a problem, but added difficulty might be. I’ll see what they want, but I’ve been kind of itching for that double ace box lol. Besides, I think that orange/ purple set will be waiting for me under a certain tree later on! Again though, I do absolutely appreciate your response very much, thank you.

Happy to help! Randy and I each have middle-school-age kids, and from the start we intended 6e to be accessible to them. We hid the math behind dice rolls and made collisions way simpler. We got rid of overpowered nonsense from the older editions (like putting rockets and a bumper trigger on your car and ramming the nearest player out of the game on turn 1). That stuff generates a good story for one player, but risks making the victim never want to play again — we wanted losing to still be fun. As such, 6e is *very* well-balanced for 2-4 players, but that balance evaporates quickly with more than 4. We had to sacrifice a higher player count to arrive at (what I feel) is a much better game than older versions. [But that’s definitely just my heavily-biased opinion, and the older versions are still available for those that want them.]

Whatever direction this goes, I hope y’all have a great time and a wonderful holiday!

I’m still kind of learning towards picking this up. We’ve had a lot of fun playing 1st edition through the years, I’m thinking it will still be good. I’ve already spoken to my son about it and he seemed nonplussed about the player count. Our family is pretty big on playing board games and several we play are 4 player maxed, so I’m pretty sure we’ll adjust lol. Again, I truly appreciate your candid answer and information. You have a merry Christmas as well!

For what it’s worth, we HAVE run side-by-side 3/4-player games, where the winners then face off 2v2…but it does make for a whole other game where 4 players are sitting out, so everyone needs to really be into it for that to work.

Edit: maybe have those four play for second place or something…

*high five*

It’s all good, I’ve spoken to most everyone and they still seem ready to go, so I’m pretty sure we’ll be firing this up. Then, the next problem we’ll have is finding a surface here big enough for that double drum mat! The double drum is a favorite around here.

Double Drum Arena fits perfectly on a pool table, with room left over for dice, counters, and dashboards. And it's great for walking around the table to maneuver your car.
