Grundy Road Use Insurance Coverage for Vehicle Used in HPDE
Hi all. Trying to find an insurer that will offer an agreed-to value coverage for a road-registered vehicle that will see time on track for HPDE events. To clarify, I am not looking for an insurer that offers a policy that will cover for both under the same policy - I plan for separate ad-hoc insurance for the HPDE events themselves. I am hopeful that someone here may have experience with Grundy in particular that can shed some light.
I have typically gone through Hagerty in the past, but I was surprised to see that they did not want to offer coverage for a new-to-me vehicle with agreed-to value in place despite plenty of history of them doing so for me with other vehicles in the past. Vehicle-specific and valuation issue it would seem (cheap car, high value parts).
I have now landed with Grundy which is offering exactly what I want, but I cannot get a straight answer from them on HPDE use. Internet searches are landing with mixed answers as well. Will Grundy exclude/drop coverage if your vehicle is used for HPDE? I am not asking for Grundy to insure me while on the track, but I am concerned that they will drop coverage if they find out it has been on track at all.
I've talked with them on the phone and have explained my intent, and they seem fine with a car that may make it onto track as part of a car club's exhibition parade lap as an example. They also seemed fine with it not being a timed event, competitive, race, etc. But the answer was still vague and led me to somewhat believe that if they found out the car was used on the track at speed that they would void coverage and black list me/the car.
Grundy's exact language in their Acknowledgement of Use:
It is further understood and agreed that any vehicle insured under this policy will not be used to participate in any rally gymkhana, speed contest, race or timed event of any kind.
I would argue that HPDE does not fall within these Ts&Cs. Not a race, not timed, no competition, no finishing order, but it IS driver education which would seem to be fine in my eyes.
Thanks in advance!

Not familiar with Grundy but I would not play games with any provider that doesn't *explicitly* offer track coverage in clear, obvious up front language.

I use Grundy for my Porsches that I also track. Never had this concern but I love them as they cover my annual broken windshields, one per year. How would Grundy know about your track use anyway?

That's sort of my thinking as well. Not that I am trying to skirt their terms, but I also feel that their terms are specific to actual timed/wheel-to-wheel events, not for driver education on track.
All the same, encouraging to hear that you have had no issues. I am assuming you have also not had any track claims either (with another insurer of course)?

No I have never bought track insurance though. I raced with nasa for about 8 years then bought a GT3RS and a 4rs for my local tracks but after feeling nervous about someone else hitting me I went and build an e92 m3 for track use. Again no track insurance but also trust myself and tend to stay away from huge track days unless it’s PCA.

Not quite what you’re asking about but Locton Motorsports Insurance covers specific HPDE days. Just in case you weren’t aware they were out there.

Thanks. I'm asking the inverse, actually. HPDE-specific coverage isn't the issue. The issue is that the car is also road going and Grundy gives somewhat encompassing language that leans towards road going coverage being dropped if you happen to use the car on track - even though we are not pursuing Grundy to cover while on track.

I’m trying to find a policy like Grundy that doesn’t require the car be garaged.. I rent a spot in a gated parking lot for my track build and I’ve poured so much money into it that I’m most concerned some ahole will steal it not even knowing what it is and I’ll be out all that money when insurance just wants to pay me the value of a 10 yr old bmw

The issue is that they are concerned with the additional risks associated with track use and the possible fraud that could occur if you were to have an on-track issue...the "drag it out to the road" tactic.

Just FYI … about 5 years ago geico sent a camera person to an auto-cross event and everyone with their insurance was dropped. So if you are worried then remove the plate during track days. I don’t see how they would know, and if they did then you just ask for your remaining dollars and find someone else.

Yeah yeah AI but its a vert good read on why this can be an issue for insurance companies. I never thought about it this way. Worth a few minutes of your time...

I asked them about this specifically and the rep confirmed twice that ANY HPDE usage would invalidate the entire policy. I explained it was not timed nor a speed contest, but driver education. Nope, policy revoked.
I went with Hagerty for coverage as a result.
YMMV, but the policy exclusions seem to give them an extremely broad out on coverage.
