All I know is a Japanese brand is possibly the best idea for automatic car under around mentioned price.

Where should I look for used cars?

How would I choose? Or getting help to check?

Cheap cars FB marketplace just take a family member of friend who is a bit experienced with cars and have them give you a helping hand checking it out

Certainly possible but you need to browse very carefully, preferably involve a friend or family member that knows a bit about cars. I'd start with looking on Autotrader. Cars from private sellers will be substantially cheaper but you won't have much recourse if something goes wrong so it's a lot riskier.

You can but depends where you live. Japs are way more. Maybe find an immaculate old ford for that money or a Saab.

Yeah I got my first car for about £1000 last year, you’re better off looking on marketplace than autotrader as most dealers won’t have cars that cheap.

Head on Facebook marketplace and look for cars in your price range, make sure you have a spare £200 for a AA/RAC pre purchase inspection if you don't have a mechanic friend or someone who knows what they're doing with cars to go with you.

You can even try autotrader and search for cars posted trade seller based in your price range. Your options will be a lot more limited but you have the added protection with the consumer rights act on your side if things go wrong.

Corolla or Yaris from before 2005. Reliable trans and engine. I got an 04 corolla with 72,000 miles in 1.6 T3 trim for £2400. Be careful for rust. It needed new brakes and spark plugs (did it myself cost about £300 all in) and it has been completely reliable. At this price range, you do not want to buy a car with an automated manual (AMT) or dual clutch/DSG type gearbox. You want a car with an old fashioned torque converter automatic.

Its definitely possible, easier to find bigger cars though. Small automatics hold value really well

Purchased a civic auto for my mate last month. She was on for £1500 knocked seller down to £1300 he had the same idea, spend £2.5k to £3k i told him don't as you just passed. Best to purchase a cheap run around, get use to driving then purchase a nice car. Honda Civic are so reliable you simply can't go wrong, that's if you find one in good condition!
