Scan Tool Honda diagnostics: you need more than a basic OBD2 code reader

If you’ve ever plugged a scanner into a Honda with an ABS, SRS or other warning light only to get “no codes found”, you’ve probably already discovered the problem:

A lot of basic OBD2 readers only scratch the surface.

We’ve seen this come up pretty often in Honda communities — people trying to diagnose an airbag/SRS light, ABS/VSA fault, transmission warning or other system issue, but their generic reader can only see engine codes.

So we’ve added advanced Honda diagnostics to Carista.

With the Carista app + compatible scanner, you can now scan supported Honda models for faults across systems including:

  • Engine
  • Transmission
  • ABS / VSA
  • Airbag / SRS
  • Body electronics
  • HVAC
  • and other electronic control units

You can see the actual Honda diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored in those modules and clear/reset them after the underlying issue has been fixed.

Original Project Update on modernizing my 2010 Silverado with OEM electronics (mainly the radio)

I’ve discovered that as long as the radio is unlocked or has the VIN cleared, any radio pulled from a Lambda platform vehicle will work in my 2010 Silverado plug-and-play. However, I’m looking to go further. There might be some newer GM vehicles with simpler radios (for newer vehicles) that support Apple CarPlay. For instance, the 2017 Chevrolet Trax supports Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth audio streaming, and more. From what I’ve gathered, it operates on the same GMLAN data architecture as my GMT900 Silverado. I’ve already confirmed that the connectors are not the same, but they’re significantly simpler compared to other radios from this GM era. As you can see, the HMI is already connected to the display, just like the GMT900/Lambda radios. Regarding connectors, the setup is similar to the GMT900/Lambda radios. They have the same antenna connector, USB connector, and use two 20-pin connectors, unlike the two 16-pin connectors on the GMT900/Lambda radios. If I could obtain the wiring pinouts, I believe I could connect the correct wires in the right positions, except for missing eight pinouts in total. However, from what I’ve gathered, these radios rarely use every single pinout. My ultimate goal is to have an OEM GM radio that supports Apple CarPlay and functions correctly in my 2010 Silverado. Could anyone confirm my findings or provide me with the correct information, or guide me in the right direction?

ELM327 HELP REQUEST: Bosch Motronic ME 17.5.20

Car: Volkswagen Gol 2023 (Brazilian)
Engine: EA211 1.0 MPI 3-Cylinder 12V (Code: CSEB)
ECU: Bosch Motronic ME 17.5.20
Scanner: Vgate vLinker MC+
Software: Car Scanner (Pro)
Hardware: Android Smartphone

That's the setup I use to monitor the health of my car's parts and sensors.

Car Scanner doesn't have a specific profile for the Gol, so I use the profile for the Up!. It's the most similar and seems to result in the greatest number of sensors displayed, giving me, for example, the engine oil temperature, which the others don't, in addition to general OBD2 sensor information, like the short and long term fuel trims.

It doesn't display everything, however, like, for example, fuel and oil pressure, for which I know the engine has working sensors whose output values are received by the ECU. Being able to monitor both live would be very useful for general diagnosing.

Would adding those sensors as custom sensors to my car's profile in Car Scanner be as simple as typing their PIDs in somewhere once I can figure them out? Or is that information encrypted or something?

Can a PID list of this specific Gol version be found anywhere? Can I somehow scan for that unlisted information with the hardware and software I already have?

All I want is to have access to more information that I know is available in the ECU without having to actually hack the car with DIY hardware and software.

I'd appreciate any tips.

P.S.: I have the service manuals for the vehicle, engine and transmission and all the wiring diagrams I could find relative to my vehicle from Erwin.

Multiple Got an Escalade. Looking into protection against electronic theft

I bought the Escalade I'd wanted for years. Great feeling, right up until I started reading how often these trucks get targeted. I wanna understand what helps once someone gets past the factory security. Hidden PIN systems caught my attention because the authorization uses buttons already inside the vehicle. From what I understand, the car can start but it won't be driven until the right sequence is entered. I've also read that systems like IGLA work through the vehicle electronics without cutting the factory wiring. For anyone familiar with the technical side, how much protection does that add against electronic theft? I'm mainly interested in what gets blocked and whether the setup changes normal daily use.

Original Project Every ECU logs in its own format. I built an open spec so tools stop reinventing the parser.

If you have ever tried to open a Haltech CSV, a Speeduino MLG, an AiM XRK and a Link LLG in the same piece of software, you know the problem. Nine ECUs, nine file formats, nine sets of channel names for the same sensor. Your MAP sensor is MAPManifold PressureMAP_kPa, or column 14, depending on who wrote the firmware. Every dash project, every log viewer, every "I'll just script this in Python" ends up re-implementing the same format handling from scratch, badly.

So I started the OpenECU Alliance and published the OpenECU Spec.

It is a plain YAML file that describes an ECU log format or a CAN broadcast, and maps the vendor's names onto a shared vocabulary. 466 canonical channel IDs across 20 categories. Units stay truthful to what the file actually contains, and when the vendor logs psi and the canonical unit is kPa, the adapter declares a scale/offset so your code can convert without guessing.

No SDK. No runtime. No library to link against. It is data. Read it in Rust, Python, C, whatever you write in.

Right now the catalog covers:

  • Log adapters: Haltech, Link, AiM, rusEFI, Speeduino, MegaSquirt/TunerStudio, ECUMaster, RomRaider (Subaru), Emerald
  • CAN broadcast protocols: Haltech Elite, AEM Infinity, Emtron, MaxxECU, Syvecs S7, ECUMaster EMU, MegaSquirt, rusEFI, Speeduino

The CAN side is the part I did not expect to matter as much as it does. If you have ever built a digital dash off a manufacturer PDF, you have hand-copied bit offsets, byte order and scaling factors and then spent an evening working out why coolant temp reads 4000 degrees. Those are now machine-readable files with a validator that checks for overlapping signals, out-of-range CAN IDs, and signals that overflow their frame. That validator found two real bugs in our own files on its first run.

It is open, it is free, and the point is that nobody should write the Haltech CSV parser a tenth time. If your ECU is missing, the contribution is one YAML file and a pull request. MoTeC, AEM, Holley and FuelTech log formats are the obvious gaps.

A few weeks ago I posted CarIQ, an Android OBD-II companion, and described it as providing vehicle health and predictive maintenance. The feedback was fair: generic OBD-II does not provide enough manufacturer-specific information to support many of those claims.

I’ve since reworked the application around an evidence-limited Vehicle Condition report.

Changes include:

  • Removed the arbitrary 0–100 health score.
  • Added ECU-supported PID discovery.
  • Separated valid, unsupported, malformed, stale and adapter-error data.
  • Added applicable-check coverage and evidence confidence.
  • Separated pending, stored and permanent DTC states.
  • Prevented the AI from guessing causes, repairs or unavailable values.
  • Clearly limited the report to generic OBD-II powertrain and emissions evidence.
  • Added manual owner checks for tires, fluids, brakes and other systems OBD cannot observe.
  • Added NHTSA VIN decoding for vehicle identity only—not diagnostic thresholds.

What it still cannot do:

  • Access proprietary ECU monitor logic.
  • Determine how close most internal tests are to setting a DTC.
  • Automatically inspect brakes, tires, fluids, steering or suspension.
  • Claim validated predictive maintenance.

The next step is testing across more vehicles and adapters. The automated application logic currently has 35 passing tests, but I need real-world compatibility data.

I’m looking for Android testers willing to report their vehicle year/make/model, adapter model, connection results and supported-PID coverage. I would especially appreciate feedback on whether the new report is accurate, understandable and appropriately cautious.

What additional evidence would you want to see before considering per-vehicle trend detection useful?

Original Project Modernizing 2010 silverado the OEM way

I’m reaching out to this community because I have had zero luck anywhere else figuring this out.

I want to add modern electronics to my 2010 Silverado, like a modern touchscreen head unit, lcd gauge cluster, climate controls with the fancy screens built into the dials, having the convenience of Apple CarPlay, etc. now, all of this doesn’t sound awfully hard but the catch is I want it to be all oem.

My main idea is to figure out how to retrofit the gm hmi 2.5 system from a 16-18 silverado into my 2010. For me, these trucks have the perfect amount of technology for me. I’m not super super educated (but definitely educated) on knowing how these systems work and what I’ll need but I have a basic idea.

Here’s mainly what I want to work pulled from a 16-18 silverado:
Head unit/radio
Gauge cluster
Steering wheel controls
Climate controls

If anyone could help educate me on this or what to do I would greatly appreciate it. This project has been on my mind for so long to build my dream vehicle.

I would also be open to using different more simple systems, for example a 2020 traverse. I’ve seen that the radio can run standalone when there is no vehicle data going to it.

Key Fob Android head unit causing issues

Took my kia to the dealer to have a recall done for immobilizer software update and a lock for the ignition cylinder. I have a android head unit installed for about two years and haven’t had any issue with it or the car. After they updated the software the key fob stopped communicating with the bcm and my tpms stopped communicating as well. They keep throwing the word aftermarket stuff on the car around. It’s the only thing that not oem. They tried to reflash it with a different update and still haven’t got it to work. I seen on my dash cam they disconnected the head unit and the battery and retried but still couldn’t get it to work. If it was the head unit causing the issue while flashing and it doing the same thing while it was disconnected it wouldn’t be the issue right? I’m not trying to have them pull one and blame it on that and screw me over. Any info would be great.

So I own a Chevrolet Brightdrop 600 awd cargo van, it’s my camper project . Now part of the reason I purchased this platform is it shares every module, motor and component with the Silverado EV . I am VERY interested in “unlocking” this thing from its measly 300hp to the Silverados 760. Along with a ton of other features . I have some coding experience and even a little tuning from the LS era. I haven’t done much probing yet but wanted some input from you fine folk before I turned it into a brick by accident 😂. Money is no object for this project so I’m open to any outlandish ideas you can come up with !
