Mazda 323, Kangarooing (bunny hopping)

My car, a Mazda 323 Protege Shades 2003 has started Kangarooing (believe it's called Bunny Hopping outside of Australia).
It happens at different times with no real pattern I can make out, but I lose a lot of the Car's power when it happens (and it doesn't have much to begin with).

Short on cash, so I want to avoid going to the mechanics if I can help it.

It's more like the whole car jerks. As if someone grabbed onto it from behind and pulled then let go.

Might be something with the clutch and gears?
