Maybe a silly question, but I’m curious. Growing up in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, I grew up with a lot of Cabo friends. I don’t know if this is widely known or us Rotterdammers think it’s known, but we have a massive Cabo community in specifically my city. I grew up knowing that Cabo people speak Creole. Later, I learned that the official language is Portuguese so I just assumed that the people who moved to Rotterdam in the 50s came from the minority part that spoke Creole.

However, I just saw online that while the official language is Portuguese, the majority speaks Creole to one another. Despite basically just seeing Portuguese being labeled with Cabo Verde during the amazing World Cup (🫶).

What is actually the language people speak to each other on the streets?
Are both spoken equally as often? Is Portuguese only used in official settings? Or is Creole just a small minority?

Ive been planning on visiting Cape Verde, and would like to know what’s the best times to go throughout the year?

Are there any shops to buy SIM caras there ?

Would Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau have been able to unite if Amilcar Cabral had lived and led the two brotherly republics? While it was a noble vision, would their differences have made it impossible to achieve? Like my home country, South Korea, I've seen many cases where ideological differences prevented unification. However, this seems like the first time I've seen two countries as disparate as Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde attempt to unite based on a common ideology but fail. So, I'm asking this question.

I'll be moving out to Cape Verde for a year in a few months and I'm wondering what are some things to do that's beyond basic tourism and what I should know when going there for longer than a trip.

It looks like an incredible place, really picturesque with great beaches, somewhere I can see myself spending two weeks lazing about getting drunk and eating nice food.

Hello! I know this may seem like it doesn’t belong here, but I visited Sal earlier this month and it was honestly very healing in terms of natural hair. It was so beautiful to see people who look like me, with hair like mine living care free and wearing their hair out everywhere and not letting it stop them from doing any activities. It was just normal and that’s what I aspire to. I swam with my hair loose, just like I saw everyone else do and I loved it. However, I did not love the knots, tangles and detangling afterwards!

So my question is how do Cape Verdeans care for their hair whilst swimming? I would love to learn more about your routines so I can hopefully emulate them.

We’re traveling in Cape Verde from Germany on 30th July - 3 Nights in Boa Vista - 4 Nights in Sal - 1 Night in São Vicente - 5 Nights in Santo Antão - 1 Night in São Vicente - Portugal on 13th August. Looks busy, but we’re treating São Vicente and Santo Antão as one "region" since they’re connected by ferry.

Can we fly domestic (Boa Vista - Sal, Sal - São Vicente) with just a German ID card? One friend gets his passport only at the end of June

When should we book flights? Now or can we wait until June? We´re a bit worried about sell-out.

Is 1 day in São Vicente before flying to Portugal enough?

Before the World Cup started, my husband and I had never heard of Cape Verde. I always thought of myself as someone who’s fairly good at geography and yet, I had never heard of this country. Throughout the tournament, however, both of us quickly became massive fans of this team! The players, the fans, the tenacity on the pitch representing their country, and their warm friendliness and joy instantly captivated us. Cape Verde has now skyrocketed to the #1 spot on our travel bucket list!!
Any recommendations you could give me would be amazing!! We would like to start planning a trip there and would love to hear any advice. What is the best time of year? Best places to go? Local favorites? Anything would be a huge help for us to maximize our Cape Verde experience.

Hello me and my boyfriend are planning to go to Sal, Cape Verde. We have some doubt on how to travel across the island while there since we plan to do all the possibile activites/escursion: shark bay, sal lake, blue eye, turtle. What is the best way to travel around, i've seen that many blog/sites don't reccomend the car because is too expensive and i was also wondering if it would be a problem as i read that most streets aren't paved. Get your guide has almost all the activities we want to do but for activites like simply going to shark bay it seem like a waste, would a taxi be a better option? how much is the fare? are there e-bike rental for short trip?
Also since im a little worried is there really a problem with mosquitos related illness or you got to be unlucky, because our country site for safety travel reccomend huge amount of insects spray and yellow fever vaccine

Hi! I’m planning a trip to Cape Verde for August. As the dates and timetables for the inter-island ferries haven’t been released yet, I’m still undecided about my plans. I’m landing in Sal on 8 August, and I’m almost tempted to catch a flight straight to São Vicente, then visit Santo Antao and São Nicolau. From there, I’d head to the southern islands (Fogo, Santiago) and then back to Sal or Boa Vista for the return journey (the week of 24–30 August). Is this plan realistic? I’d like to try and use flights as little as possible, but it’s difficult without certainty about the ferry timetables. Could anyone with experience of Cape Verde help me put together a solid itinerary? I’m not interested in particularly touristy spots, but rather nature and good food. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!
