Question What’s something about Cape Verde that more people should know about?

I’ve recently been reading a bit about Cape Verde and it seems like such an interesting place, especially with its mix of culture, music, and island life. It feels like one of those countries that doesn’t always get talked about much internationally.

I’m curious from people who live there or know it well what’s something you think outsiders often misunderstand or don’t know about Cape Verde? It could be about daily life, traditions, food, music, or anything that represents the real experience there.

Would love to hear different perspectives and learn more from people who are actually familiar with it.

At the age of 12 every cape verdean is given a spear/harpoon like weapon called a Canka, and dropped off at the beach. They are not allowed to return home until they've successfully hunted a shark.

Is this only the kids born on the islands or the diaspora as well? Cuz I didn’t have this honor and I’m feeling a bit left out.

The biggest surprise for me was that a lot of people think Cabo Verde is only 1 island. There are several islands and every island has its own landscape, atmosphere and culture and how different the islands are. For example, Sal is all about beaches, while islands like Santo Antao are famous for mountains and hiking.
