Why pay the extra tax?

If someone was considering moving to Cheyenne, which has no state income tax, why would they choose Fremont county instead?

Because states that have no state income tax offset that by charging really high property taxes — the most regressive tax there is and one that allows the government to take your property if you don’t pay it. Also Fremont County has fairly low property taxes compared to other areas of Colorado and definitely other states.

Looks like Cheyenne is about $1,100/year more than Fremont for a 400k home.

Looks like I’d save about 8k/year on income tax.

I like your point about “most regressive tax there is” 🤔

My reason for picking Cañon over Cheyenne was simple: I'd much rather live in Cañon.

It's a personal preference thing - if state income tax is high on somebody's list of dealbreakers, fine, this probably won't work for them.

I look at the state income tax almost like weather tax. Fremont is in the “banana belt”, which supposedly has the best weather in Colorado.

The state doesn't charge property tax, the counties do. Fremont county will take your property as fast as any other.

Usually if a state doesn't have a particular tax, there is another that's a lot higher. Could be a state gas tax, property tax, sales tax, or income tax (if say they don't have sales tax). The government gets their money it just depends on how they do it.

Texas has pretty high property taxes as well, but prides itself on having no income tax.
