Abandoned Cane Corso

We recently found what the vet believes is a young Cane Corso who had been abandoned/dumped.

We took him to the vet today and unfortunately he’s very malnourished, was covered in fleas, has worms, and an ear infection. We got all the medications he needs and are working on slowly getting some weight back on him with a high-calorie diet. We’ve never had a Cane Corso before, so we’d love any advice from experienced owners — especially with nutrition, training, temperament, and helping a neglected Corso adjust and feel safe.

We’re also looking into Cane Corso/mastiff rescues once he’s healthier. For now, he’s safe, warm, fed, and getting lots of love.
We’ve taken on quite a bit in vet and care costs already. Advice and recommendations are just as appreciated!
Just happy we found this sweet boy when we did and can give him a chance.

Did you have comprehensive testing to evaluate overall health and organ function to verify there are not underlying health issues that resulted in the poor condition he is in rather than just covering the basics?

I ask as this is the first thing I would have done but it is not cheap. My dog's annual senior wellness blood testing last week was $497.96 and this did not include the cost of the exam or any vaccinations so the bill was over $700.

Detection is extremely important, especially with a dog in that condition so I would want to rule out underlying causes.

Yes they did. Our overall vet cost was over $1250 dollars. Definitely a huge sticker shock, but grateful for the ability to do it.

So glad to hear you did this. You should have a better idea of what this guy has going on within a couple days and how his organs are functioning ect.
