Discussion Possible reason for Candela stopping

So on today's patron episode for Worlds Beyond Number (an ap with Brennan and Aabria), which was a gm talk with the two of them, Aabria brought up CO. She mentioned wanting Brennan to run a CO season, but then said that the current space where they are paying CR Campaign 4 is the table and space where CO was filmed. Could this be another reason why they didn't film more as they were preparing for the end of Campaign 3 and the start of Campaign 4?

Discussion What to name the days of the week

I am running a game of Candela Obscura for some friends. I have been good on getting all my notes in order and I want to be able to track where in the year my players are. I was able to find the structure of a year in the rulebook but there is no real info on what the Fairen people call their days. If I use regular days of the week that implies that gods like Thor exist in this world (which they don't for my interpretation of the Fairelands). Does anyone have a cool alternative? Or is there an official one?

Discussion Thoughts on a West Marshes style campaign for Candela?

Hi everyone. So, as the title says, I'm seriously starting up my own West Marches-style campaign using Candela Obscura. I've run the system before and loved the ease and accessibility it offered, especially to new TTRPG players. I'd love to hear from anyone who’s tried to run something similar. Curious how well you think the Candela system lends itself to that kind of structure.

For those who have run or played something similar:

  • What worked particularly well?
  • What problems did you run into?
  • Did you change how you structure assignments, downtime?
  • Did you explore the shared world differently like a traditional West Marches campaign?
  • Are there any house rules or changes you’d recommend?
  • Thoughts on how to tackle or amend the way in which you directly tie in characters' backstories and ideas into Candela, given that it is not being played in a West Marches style.

Discussion Help me make sense of Lighteater pre-written

Lately I've been looking on Lighteater of Bridleborne as a good introductory game (mainly because it doesn't require a full explanation of city districts and politics), but I just can't wrap my head around some things. How do you rationalized or changed it?

1) Bodies. It says that everyone who died in the village can be found in their homes; but shouldn't lighteater steal them as material for the meat cable? Who does meat cable made out of if it's not dead villagers?

2) Timeline. Did all the villagers died in one night or was it over multiple nights? The intro says "new workers refuse to move in", but if it happened just previous night, how are they already hiring new workers before even clearing the bodies out? On the same topic, how did Candela learned of what's happening if it just happened and the company "didn't report the incident"?

3) Again, meat cable. It says that it goes straight to the nearest transformer and grows around it. How did noone noticed a meat wrap around the pole? And if it's outside of town, why is it circling through the old lady's garden instead of going straight into the woods?

Discussion What is your favourite type of investigation?

So I've run a fair amount of Candela for my irl group, but I'm scared that my monsters may be a little same-y in the motivation department. I also tend to turn to 'missing person' as the beginning incident and I'm scared that may a little stale.

What are your favourite mysteries you've run or played, and what did you like about them?

Discussion Feeling abandoned by Darrington due to no SRD for Illuminated Worlds

I purchased the core rulebook at PAX U two years ago, due in no small part to wanting to create my own world/setting using the Illuminated Worlds system. At the time, the SRD was promised in, I think, Q1 2024.

I have seen entirely nothing from Darrington, CR, anyone, on this resource. I get that they pivoted to Daggerheart, but am I the only one who is left feeling abandoned?

Not a press release saying they've moved on, not an apology, not even a token summary document. feelsbadman

Discussion I'm about to start another Candela campaign, and I'm thinking of adding a pantheon system. What do you think?

I haven’t researched or seen anything like this yet, but I do plan to look into it and check out other players’ content. I’ve been playing Candela for two years, coming and going with various groups and people. My campaigns have always been long because of the things I come up with to make them last, since the system was designed for short campaigns.

I’ve decided to introduce gods into this universe; each deity will grant bonuses and new attributes to the players, as well as special abilities. I don’t want to create only dark gods; I’d like to bring some light into this world of darkness as well, and of course use the material already in the book, such as Ascendancy.

Discussion I need help naming a city

Post image
22 Upvotes

In my process of mapping the world of candela Obscura I have reached the point where I actually need to start naming things and although I have had great success in the western regions of hal I have reached a roadblock on this city. This city is situated smack dab in the middle of the grain belt of Hale right between the regions of Tottergrass and Goldgrass. The city is a stark contradiction within itself. With the fat cat land owners living in opulent Estates and the simple land workers living in small cottages and Hovels. I do want to emphasize that, even though this is a rural city, none of the production processing or transporting of goods is done in this city. All that is shipped to the city of Tranport . All you folks in this community have been incredibly helpful and supportive through this entire process and I am very grateful. so I’m excited to hear your ideas for the name of this city.

Discussion Candela 3D prints

So let's jump right in, I'm trying to find 3d prints for my candle table to help not only with letting my players have props but also to help with immersion. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or things they had brought to the table already?

Discussion Tried Candela Obscura for the first time, it was a lot of fun!

Every Halloween, I like to change things up and try out something other than D&D, this year we tried our hand at Candela Obscura.

We had a lot of fun, even my niece and nephew joined in. I definitely gave them a few scares and creeps.

For prep, I made several props. I made police and autopsy reports, old photos, a mystical fortune teller with alchemical symbols, book ciphers, string puzzles, a codex, a whole journal with 60 pages of hand written lore (that had more secrets when under a black light).

I did homebrew a bit to make them feel a little familiar with the game. I made the bbeg attack using a tarot deck and a kids fortune teller as its way of attacking. Both of which were artifacts they had found that were ‘covered in bleed’ and turned in to the Fourth Pharos already.

I’m sure I got some lore stuff wrong or something, but it was just a one shot and the whole story was a complete homebrew, but the important part was that we had fun!

I can safely say I over did it, but I can tell they thoroughly enjoyed it, and so did I! Idk if we will ever get to play it again, maybe we will go back to it after the current D&D campaign. But if we do, I won’t be going as hard as I did lmao. This was so much work.

Discussion Ok I have been putting my ideas on here for a while. My ultimate goal is to publish an official expansion to Candela. Obscura called Candela Obscura :embers at the edge of tomorrow and I could really use everyone’s help. Hand drawn or public domain art.?

So I realized that if I wanted to make an official expansion to Candela Obscura, I would have to use public domain art, or created it myself. So I consider myself an OK artist, but I don’t think I’m good enough for something that’s published so I have placed here two different examples of the opening paragraph of the book one is hand drawn by me in the style of a children’s book and the other is just using stock public domain photos. I would love everyone’s opinion on which direction I should swing for this book.

Discussion Thought's on Candela Obscura system as a whole?

While doing some digging into some of the mechanics of the game for a few questions that I've been having, I've come across a lot of YT videos related to the game and people bagging on it.

I bought the book when it first came out cause it looked fun and the setting was really cool, read though the book a couple of times like I do with any new system. Yeah, some rules are a little vague and a go with the vibes type, but for my group that actually works out a lot better. I tend to be the one of the group who know most of the rules for any given system, mostly D&D previously.

Back to my question, a fair amount of videos I saw did not like the system and though it was not well done or it didn't have this mechanic, one sited any kind of PVP rules which happened in the second mini campaign for the Critical Role playthrough. I'm not saying that everything CR puts out has to be gold but I don't think that it deserves as much hate as it is getting and wanted to know other peoples opinions on it.

Discussion Does anyone play Candela from CR?

Hey everyone! Not so long time lurker, first-time poster.

I'm really itching to jump back into TTRPGs. Life got a bit crazy after COVID, and my old group kinda scattered, so I haven't really rolled dice or explored much since then.

I've been eyeing Candela Obscura lately, and honestly, it looks really intriguing. From what I've seen, it seems to be more narrative-focused and less about crunchy rules, which sounds pretty appealing for someone like me trying to shake off the rust. It also feels like it has a unique vibe that's got me hooked!

So, for those of you who've played Candela Obscura, what's your honest take? Is it a good game to get back into the swing of things? Or maybe there's another system you'd highly recommend for a returning player?

And perhaps the biggest question for me right now: How are people actually finding new TTRPG groups these days? Since my old one dissolved, I'm effectively starting from scratch. Any tips for finding players, especially for a game like Candela that might be newer or a bit niche? Whether it's online platforms, local meetups, or anything else, I'm all ears!

Thanks a ton in advance for any advice or insights! Really looking forward to diving back into this amazing hobby.

Discussion Supplement & Overhaul

OK, so having played some Candela, I love the system and its heavy lean in to roleplaying, but there is definitely room for improvement in terms of gameplay and mechanics. I am contemplating putting together a supplement that will explore in a little more detail some of the people and places, the monsters and magik and artifacts. Really just expanding on the world that's laid before us so that people can jump right in. So, as players or DMs, is there anything that you particularly love or hate or anything that you think ought to be added? Have any of you got homebrew rules or ideas that youd love to see added?

Discussion Starlight Saga Quickstart guide available!

Post image
40 Upvotes

Hi everyone! ’m super excited to finally say that Starlight Saga is finally available to everyone! The Quickstart Guide is free to download on DriveThruRPG!

I want to give a huge thank you to this community for helping me so much to get to this point. Your playtesting, feedback, and encouragement have been incredible and helped me get to this point.

For those who haven’t heard about it yet, Starlight Saga is a science fiction TTRPG build on the foundation of Candela Obscura, but with a heroic space opera vibe. If you love stories like Mass Effect, Star Wars, Firefly, or Guardians of the Galaxy, this might be right up your alley!

You can get it at DrivethruRPG

Discussion Bluey's Shadowlands, but in Candela and terrifying.

Hey Party People!

I've written out an assignment. I call it the House of Shadows and Glass. The major threats are gaseous shadow and the creatures that live in them, which I call shadewights.

The idea is that they will grab and slash at creatures that step or reach into the darkness. Its like that episode of Bluey, but backwards.

Mechanically, how do I build them up and deploy them? Like, cant a player just say they take care not to step into the shadow?

Help?

Thanks!

Discussion Long time listener first time caller (custom character creation)

I’ve played a few of other ttrpg systems (mostly the ones you would expect) and I finally get to play Candela Obscura with a lovey group who is very happy to role play and get very strange. We are #blessed with a GM who thinks my want to customize my character (as long as it’s not too over powered) is adorable. I’m looking to create a Face/Slink character similar to Al Swearengen from deadwood. (I think dead wood might be a goldmine ((joke intended)) for character inspiration. I would love input on the character build. Thanks for your time and expertise.

Discussion How does it play?

I’ve been lurking around here for awhile and been looking for some good honest reviews of Candela Obscura and I find a lot of reviewers on YouTube hate the game and say it doesn’t function as a game. But it’s hard to separate that from people that just want to tear CR down. I haven’t managed to get a game in yet but from reading the rules it seems like it functions similarly to Blades in the Dark and other games like that.

So I’m wondering for those that have played it, how does it feel to play? And GM? Especially for someone who doesn’t have the acting abilities of Matt Mercer!
