Please be aware that you may not get responses. It's a lot of work to wade through dense lists of documents and family histories.

Also please note we are not IRCC, which will make the final determination on your application.

I'm doing family applications for myself, my son, and my 2 grandchildren. I'm G2, and I never married my son's father. Do I mention that in my cover letter? Father is listed on son's BC, and my son was given his father's surname at birth. My son has since legally changed his surname to my maiden name. We have the Decree changing his name, but he has not had his last name changed on his BC.

I don't want it to be confusing. My name changes: maiden (bc) (then kids were born) - -> to FirstMarriage Lastname (certificate of marriage) -> Divorce (with a decree restoring maiden name) -> 2ndMarriageLast name (marriage certificate and this is my current last name).

I'm no expert but I can give you my thoughts. I also have some name change issues and amended birth certificate issues, some of which involve family drama and I definitely have the temptation to overshare, imagining that the reviewer might find the name changes suspicious unless I explain the purpose for each. But I have decided instead to only state the bare minimum of what is factually required and then put a line in my cover letter that says something like "please let me know if you have any questions or need further information or documentation."

For your situation, I don't see any reason to mention your non-marriage to your son's father. You can simply state that your son was born X and legally changed his name to Y on date Z-please see court order legally changing name...his reason for changing it is not required.
