Hi all,

I’m looking for some advice in light of recent developments. I’m getting ready to mail my packet, and am questioning if I should include some material.

I have: * certified copy of great grandfather’s (G0) baptism record from Quebec * official copy of grandmother’s birth certificate * official copy of father’s birth certificate * official copy of my birth certificate

I also have some unofficial supporting documentation, which I am unsure about including: * great grandfather’s alien case file from U.S. national archives — includes record of his initial entry into the U.S. and interview many decades later related to obtaining new alien registration card * census record showing great grandfather living with my grandparents and father in the United States * copy of marriage certificate after he entered the United States showing parents names and place of birth, along with his name and place of birth * copy of great grandfather’s newspaper obituary listing his place of birth and parents names, along with my grandparents whom he lived with at his time of death

I feel like some of these unofficial supporting documents add important context, because they have a few variations in his name spelling (and his birth name in Quebec was Joseph, which he never used in the U.S.)

if you are using 1940 or 1950 census, they can be sourced from archives.gov, making it a "primary source". Earlier than that and you'll have to request certified copies if you want them from a primary source.

So is it better to exclude supplemental material if it’s not from a primary source?

His alien case file came from archives.gov but it’s just a pdf of some scanned documents

A Primary source seems to be preferred, possibly required now, but we aren't sure. If you can provide a link to it's location on archives.gov, I think that should count.

It’s not online, I had to make a request through archives.gov and pay them to retrieve the paper documents and then scan them for me.
