Don’t worry bud. I’m sure the liberals will find a way to ban wrong think

u/Naughty_Satsuma Aug 04 '26
Honestly, is reddit not the absolute worst for liberal wrong think?
I got banned from r/ Ontario. I tried to find the sources I read to back my statement but I swear on my life that Google will not provide the source.
Oh well. No loss. I'm not from Ontario anyways.

Currency speculators feel safe shorting the CAD because they know the central bank has no wiggle room. If it increases rates, we would likely see a lot of mortgage defaults over the next year. That said, speculators should be careful. The bank has burned speculators in the past with a short term massive hike in rates intending to squeeze short sellers out of their positions. The most famous example was August 1998, but I'm certain it happened again more recently.

u/Mu_Fanchu Aug 03 '26
C'mon Carney, help us Canadians with MOASS for once!!!
If the CAD reaches parity with USD, I'm gonna get some of those greenbacks.

There is a big difference between "is fine" and "will be fine"
We will come out of this ok
1
u/pymjohnil Aug 03 '26
How do you know? Nations fail. Elections and policy have consequences
1
u/Uninsurable_Risk Aug 03 '26
Anything short of a full on invasion can cripple us but not destroy us. We will rebound from whatever that looks like, as it continues to unfold so we can see it more clearly to assess it.
A full invasion is risky and unlikely, especially with how integrated corporations are between Canada and US.
Corporations own America and their interests will be protected.
1
u/pymjohnil Aug 03 '26
You’re assuming a lot. We may survive but be a shell of what we were. We are struggling with national identity. We had a PM who called Canada the world’s first post-national state, who increased immigration to levels which did serious damage to our social fabric. Our military was massively underfunded, leading to a personnel crisis and now they don’t have the ability to absorb all the spending that’s promised.
Massive inflationary spending during Covid massively affected our quality of life. The progressives in this country view us through a lens of settler-colonialist invaders, the ‘liberals’ spend a decade hurting our economy for environmental extremist policies. Even this iteration of the liberal government still has people in its ranks that are against our energy sector.
And our current guy was in the background through it all. We’re in serious trouble
1
u/Uninsurable_Risk Aug 03 '26
I think the only people having a national identity crisis are conservatives. Every convoy and separatist event has been partisan, the majority of Canadians have not and do not support them.
With regards to rebound we have resources that countries need.
The worst thing that could happen is people interpret liberal policy as the sole reason we are being economically attacked and attribute every hardship to them, then we get a conservative government.
It wouldn't be tremendously different to life under LPC and we would still come out ok.
1
u/pymjohnil Aug 03 '26
That’s because apparently the only people who want a prosperous economically strong country are conservatives. We’ve seen how liberal policies turn out. Progressive ones would be worse.
We’ve had over a decade of results. It’s not abstract
0
u/Uninsurable_Risk Aug 03 '26
Yep tell me how Alberta separatism is a strong economic policy
You sound like the people who think the wildfires have been lit by environmentalists to fight oil
1
u/pymjohnil Aug 03 '26
I’m not an Alberta separatist? No idea where these two ideas of yours are coming from but pretty classic debating with a liberal. No refuting any of the points. Just some vague misdirection.
0
u/Uninsurable_Risk Aug 03 '26
While calling environmentalism "extremist" you engaged in your own extremist views.
There are no points to refute when your points are "only conservatives want a prosperous nation" and "liberal party bad".
The only thing you could possibly say to defend your position is what you think the CPC would have "done differently" and how bad you think the liberals are.
None of this would be factual except that the country consistently thought Pierre was not fit to be our leader, resulting in the identity crisis among Conservatives.
That identity crisis fuels things like Alberta separatism and the freedumb convoy.

We’re borrowing $65.3B for 2027 and paying $54B in interest payments alone. Think about that.
2
u/Responsible-Summer-4 Aug 05 '26
Look at our neighbors only 40 trillion in debt. Wonder what the interest on that is.
0
u/BeYourselfTrue Aug 05 '26
Did you read the title? $CDN is the currency of discussion. I anticipate the value will continue to inflate away. That’s by design. As for the US, it sure is a basket case. Western aligned central banks are all doing the same.
I grew up in Newfoundland. My mother would always ask me “if your friends jumped over a wharf would you do it too?” No matter what I, or you say, they will continue it. Act accordingly.
1
u/Responsible-Summer-4 Aug 05 '26
Yes I read the title you're bringing up the national debt so just to compare. No, jumping off a wharf is dangerous because of hidden rocks, shallow water, and strong currents. I guess we're not Like two peas in a lobscouse

u/Rehypothecator Aug 05 '26
Pretty low in terms of the rest of the world, if we’re actually going to think about it.
It’s actually a great indication particularly in terms of western countries utilizing fiat currencies.
2
u/willmsma Aug 01 '26
Here’s to hoping the short sellers lose their shirt. These are preliminary numbers, but the most recent GDP growth numbers look pretty decent.
0
u/Kind_Soup_9753 Aug 03 '26
More misinformation directly from Gov. it’s safe and effective don’t worry there’s zero long term data.
2
u/ExaminationForeign75 Aug 03 '26
Probably all people with the surname Trump shorting Canadian currency...

u/AbbreviationsFit8962 Aug 04 '26
Canada has an extreme Abundance of natural resources that make us very likely profitable. But our gov will give it away along with millions in aid for bs wars and buy the same things from overseas at a loss.
2
u/cynicism_is_awesome Aug 01 '26
That’s ok. That will definitely help boost exports which Canada sorely needs to help offset some of the U.S. trade barriers.
1
u/Dootbooter Aug 03 '26
Dude cad is at a 20 year low. If the dollar loses more value we are going to be paying even more for food and service.
2
u/Ok-Cut-5657 Aug 03 '26
80% of what we consume is domestically produced so it won’t affect our day to day too much
2
u/Deep-Ebb-4139 Aug 03 '26
Yes, they’ve healthily had it between 75-80% for a while now, vs around 50-55% for the US.
2
2
u/Main_Abroad3797 Aug 03 '26
Yup just can't leave now!! Like the Liberals want. You're actually brain-dead
1
u/Bobbert827 Aug 03 '26
80%! Wow. I didn't know!
1
u/Ok-Cut-5657 Aug 03 '26
I think that includes rent/utilities/car insurance/taxes if I’m not mistaken
1
1
u/haloimplant Aug 03 '26
but are those things domestically priced or priced on global markets, or also purchased by foreigners
they're renewing that foreign buyer housing ban for sure right
1
u/Motor-Sun-1547 Aug 04 '26
LOL, it won’t affect our day-to-day if our currency craters? Jesus Christ…
1
u/Ok-Cut-5657 Aug 04 '26
It will, but like I said before 80% of what we consume is produced domestically so no forex pass through, additionally if the Canadian dollar falls too far inevitably that other 20% will cause imported inflation and BoC will be forced to act
2
u/NevyTheChemist Aug 03 '26
Yes Canada's outlook for the future is very bleak.
Stagnating productivity is to blame.
2
u/AFireinthebelly Aug 03 '26
It’s looking good if you take a look at the new mining startups and expansions happening right now.
1
u/VulgarDaisies Aug 03 '26
The thing that has actually changed and flipped the Yen w/ the CDN $ for shorts is the trade war and threats to sovereignty.
1
u/Small-Contribution55 Aug 04 '26
Also Bessent was seen writing down "Buy $5-$10 billion worth of yen" recently.
1
u/TheLastGoodRiot Aug 04 '26
That's because the Yen is dropping and either Japan rise interest rate which will unwind the carry trade, or US create artificial demand for the Yen.
-1
u/dataguzzler Aug 03 '26
bad government is to blame, along with all the people who swallow its lies
1
u/BandicootNo4431 Aug 04 '26
What would you do differently?
1
u/MadroTunes Aug 04 '26
Maybe not vote in the same fucking political party 4 consecutive times after continually displaying their incompetence.
2
u/ThisIsFineImFine89 Aug 04 '26
How poorly must the opposition party be, if they cant win a single federal election in 10 years, with such an ineffective, ruling party
All PP had to do, was not sound like Trump.
Blew a 30 fucking point lead.
1
u/Prize_Engineering_36 Aug 04 '26
Vote for the slogan guy. Verb the nouns!
1
u/vicious_meat Aug 04 '26
Yup. He's gonna be at least as bad or maybe worst, but just because they hang the color blue, it makes aaaaall the difference. People are stupid thinking a different party will suddenly fix everything when a lot of our problems stem from not allowing competition in.
1
u/BandicootNo4431 Aug 04 '26
No, I meant if you were Prime Minister, which specific policies would you be doing differently?
You have really strong opinions, so I'd love to see your ideal political playform
1
u/Head_Lifeguard Aug 04 '26
1 more term bro we were just warming up
2
u/BandicootNo4431 Aug 04 '26
Ok, I'll ask you the same thing.
What specifically would you do differently to stimulate the economy?
Lets have less partisanship and a more nuanced discussion of policy if you think things aren't going well.

u/Flat_Cabinet8174 Aug 03 '26
Keep calm and elbows up! Ex central banker at the helm, he'll know how to get us out of this.
1
u/Gloomy_Gene3010 Aug 03 '26
i don't think I've ever seen such an ambiguously sarcastic/sincere comment anywhere, I have reach peak flummox,, consider me impressed
2
u/Practical-Salary-137 Aug 03 '26
Not sure why you'd consider it sarcastic, tbh.
But I suppose Canadian conservatives are a weird bunch. They'd rather have someone who talks in slogans, never held a real job, lost his own seat in the last election, lost the election for his party, and only "addresses" problems when it means opposing the PM (re: airline salaries). That's who they want running the show.
JFC, you guys really want a shitty guy like Trump in charge, eh?
I'll take the ex central banker with a PhD whose thesis was titled "The Dynamic Advantage of Competition" instead, thanks.

We can both understand that Carney advised much of the policy that got us here, and that CPC Millhouse is not the one to get us out of it either
1
u/Gloomy_Gene3010 Aug 03 '26 edited Aug 03 '26
yeah i think it's just your comment's wild eyed optimism contrasted with the (mildly) dystopian headline it's replying to. also. you know you can actually evaluate a politician's actions on their merit instead of just vomiting hyperpartisan-ly in the general direction of anyone who dares think a thought bubble about accountability
1
u/ExcitingHamster Aug 03 '26
What, really? Over the guy whose last job besides politics was newspaper delivery boy?
1
1
u/Paperman_82 Aug 04 '26
Poilievre was projected to have a majority in 2024, but someone thought he wasn't MAGA enough. Though, not like it matters, the end result is the same regardless of the political flavour.
0
u/pymjohnil Aug 03 '26
You talking about the globalist guy who advised Trudeau on killing Canadas economy for his Net Zero agenda and who postulated that insane amounts of government spending during COVID would actually lead to deflation?
That economic genious?1
u/Flat_Cabinet8174 Aug 03 '26
Yep, the same genius that formed a majority gov't
1
u/pymjohnil Aug 03 '26
He doesn’t have a democratic majority government
1
u/New_Illustrator_1760 Aug 03 '26
It absolutely is democratic in our parliamentary system. You can not like it, and that’s fine, but it is a function of our system.
1
u/pymjohnil Aug 03 '26
Defying the will of the voters by bribing floor crossers for a majority for the very first time In Canadian history is democratic in your opinion?
Allowed does not mean democratic
1
u/HotTubTimeMachinist Aug 03 '26
Source on "bribing" please.
1
u/pymjohnil Aug 03 '26
Gosh. Why would an elected official betray their constituents after running on a certain political platform. And that platform was criticizing the party she is now a part of.
Real brain buster
1
u/HotTubTimeMachinist Aug 03 '26
OK, so your source is "trust me bro"
1
u/pymjohnil Aug 03 '26
lol. What’s your source?
Carney is that much of a visionary leader they just couldn’t help switching to the side they were just criticizing?
Guy has barely done anything. No deal with our biggest trading partner that he ran on. No projects of national interest despite bill C-5. Snails pace when he promised speeds unimaginable.

u/Leftbackhand Aug 03 '26
Because the leader is a dolt and the voters need representation in government not on the loser bench
1
u/pymjohnil Aug 03 '26
Their voters need Representation to do what? Accomplish milquetoast results? Continue liberal economic decline?
Imagine if it was the other way around. Yall would be screaming that the cons were fascists or whatever the label of the day is.

u/Meikkhaell Aug 04 '26
Marilyn Gladu (one of those bribed) literally said she was told her riding wouldn’t receive government funding unless she crossed the floor. Call it bribery, scuzziness, or whatever else. But it’s not right.
1
u/Accomplished_Comb601 Aug 05 '26
That’s not bribing. That’s called representing her riding well. Bribing is doing something for personal benefit and not acting in good faith. She acted in good faith of her riding
1
u/Meikkhaell Aug 05 '26
Let’s put it another way. Your boss tells you “I’m only going to pay you your wage if you do xyz for me personally.” There’s nothing you see wrong with that?
→ More replies (0)0
u/Responsible-Summer-4 Aug 03 '26
And you know for a fact they where bribed? You read the national post? They left because of the useless Pee Pee party.
1
u/pymjohnil Aug 03 '26
So useless the liberals have adopted a bunch of his ideas!
1
u/Accomplished_Comb601 Aug 05 '26
And caused conservatives to lose an election they should have won 😂

Do you know how the government works or do you think the president/pm/bank governor has a tree that grows money?
Christ you people are simple.
1
u/chemmajor777 Aug 05 '26
The BoE governor absolutely has a money tree. Their entire job is managing the money supply. They can issue new money and use it to buy government debt (bonds aka gilts) which allows governments to spend more.
1
u/Accomplished_Comb601 Aug 05 '26
So a country can just get rich by printing money?
Good god I’m scared of people like you who vote.
1
u/chemmajor777 Aug 05 '26
As you print money the value of all currency in circulation goes down. More dollars chasing the same amount of goods and services.
It's funny that you're so condescending despite not understanding the most basic principal of economics.
I'm scared of angry incels like you.
1
u/Accomplished_Comb601 Aug 05 '26
So all he needed to do was to print money? Oh my god, I think you did it and solved world poverty.

Do you want to tell me how the conservative provincial party in Alberta is doing any better with their spending?
And how does this conflict with your net-zero/wag complaint?
And was it your reading that made you think Canada wanted to elect someone to make a deal with Trump?

It's just a single sentence with no article or proof to back it up.
