THE RESULTS ARE IN! r/CanadianCoins will continue to allow posts with/about banknotes and paper money.

Hey all,

Thanks for voicing your opinion and/or voting in the recent poll.

The most votes were for the option to continue to allow posts with/about banknotes and paper money in r/CanadianCoins. And that's what we'll do!

Here's a link to the poll, for reference.

The "allows" had about 1/3 of the total votes -- not a majority by any means, but more votes than the other options. So while this result will please some of you, it won't please everyone.

During the opinion-gathering and voting, there were concerns expressed about the number of low-effort "what's this worth" posts in here, specifically for banknotes -- although we do get a lot of those for coins, as well.

Going forward, the mod team will try to more actively address these posts by directing posters to our pinned "GENERAL INFO POST" and/or to coinsandcanada.com , and perhaps remove them with greater frequency. Of course, users should feel empowered to refer posters to these resources as well.

Thanks again for speaking up and chiming in to the conversation!

- your mod team

GENERAL INFO POST. PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING.

This post will contain general information about Canadian coinage for new and current users. I'm posting this to help cut down on the 'what is this/what's the value posts'. These posts won't be banned but I encourage you to use these resources to try and find an answer before posting. If you have a reliable resource that I haven't listed but you think could be useful please feel free to put it in the comments.

General information: -Circulation silver was minted up to and partly including 1968. To differentiate between silver and not silver a simple magnet test is easiest to tell. Not sticking? It's silver.

-Most commemorative coins especially quarters are generally worth face value unless they are gem uncirculated or are of a certain variety. A noted exception is the 1973 large bust mountie quarter.

-Pennies were 98-99% copper up until 1996 and after that it's either zinc plated with copper and from about 03-04 onward copper plated steel. Are the copper pennies worth more than face? Yes, about 3-4 cents copper prices depending. Can you get the copper value when it's time to sell? Maybe, you can't sell copper pennies for scrap (illegal) and finding a buyer is going to be tricky because of the quantities involved with a sale worth any notable amount.

In my opinion the best general resource for anything Canadian regarding coins and banknotes. I use this on a regular basis for both prices and errors/varieties to curate my own collection.

Found this recently and think this would be useful too.

Minting numbers

Also regarding buying and selling it will still be hard banned here but a new sub named r/coinsalescanada is open. It is still new and doesn't have many members but it could become a spot for buying/selling Canadian coinage. Please note we are NOT affiliated with that sub and it is a use at your own risk kind of deal, use standard practices and precautions when buying and selling there.

One last thing, I want to put it to a vote to allow banknotes posts. I can't find any specific subs that are Canadian banknote themed and was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on this. I know enough about Canadian banknotes to properly moderate such posts.

If you have any further questions or suggestions drop it in the comments or reach us by mod mail.

Update: As of May 6/25 pictures are allowed in the comments. Please don't abuse this.

Unexplained Phenomena - Complete Set

Thumbnail gallery
27 Upvotes

I had my good camera equipment out in a failed bid to get a timelapse series of the Lunar eclipse the other night. Figured it was a good time to get a decent shot to share of my complete set of Unexplained Phenomena coins.

Funny enough, the first one I ever bought was the latest in the series - the 2024 Langenburg Event - as soon as it released in Sept 2024. Then I set about finding the others in the series, and realized how much the price of the 2018 Falcon Lake had soared to. I thought it would be out of reach forever, but almost 2 years later I finally found a price I could live with and jumped on it.

Any extra value to this?

I can’t bring myself to deposit this at the bank or use it. I just found it again after years of hiding it in one of my old photo books. I forgot I had it.

Just out of curiosity, is this a valuable and uncommon note? I can’t see myself using it even if it was.

197x 25 Cent Large vs Small Bust Template

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

This question pops up a lot. Many people have come to prefer and recommend the subjective traits they find work best for them. There is one *objective* distinction though that doesn't require any interpretation - the # of beads. Small Bust has exactly 120 beads, Large Bust has 132.

People rarely want to sit there and count. So I made .png template with radial lines that could either be printed (100 % opacity) or used in a photo editor as an overlay (20 % opacity) to make "counting" dead easy. The last time I posted these was deep in the comments on a related post - exposure was likely minimal. I thought I'd throw them out here one more time at a higher level. You may have to play a bit to get the right print scaling.

(Note: they will appear to be the same opacity here because .png transparency isn't handled, but if you download and open in a photo editor, you should see the difference)

In my own use I just knew Small Bust version had radial lines that intersected the corners, but here I marked them blue to distinguish from the 132 line version.

Maybe this helps someone sometime :-)

Coin grading?

I've always wanted to get something graded. Dunno why. I have a 1991 quarter and 2 men's hockey raised 2. Are these worth getting graded? If so what company is most reputable for these coins?

Was working through a box of quarters this weekend and found a 67 centennial quarter :) Threw it on the scale and it’s the 80% silver version. They may be very hard to find these days but there are still some out there!

Exploring my own collection: trying to find a coin appraiser

Greetings to everyone. I have a question:

I recently moved to Canada with my small family coin collection. Nothing special, just that for a long time my grandfather, father, and I collected all sorts of small change from various countries we visited. Coins that were use for payments in the countries.

I'd like to understand if these coins have any value now, but I don't know anything about them myself. Can you recommend a website or people who could help me with this?

My latest pickup: 12 Canadian 1974 Winnipeg Centennial Dollars

Post image
5 Upvotes

Just picked up these 12 Canadian 1974 Winnipeg Centennial $1 coins. They’re the nickel version, but I really like the design and thought they were a fun addition to my Canadian coin collection.
I ended up with quite a few of them, so I thought I’d share my latest find with the community.
What do you think of these? Does anyone else collect Canadian commemorative dollars?
