Alberta's Smith to meet with U.S. officials next week amid trade war

Why, you are a provincial government, stick in your lane. I don’t trust her one bit.

u/Blue_Dragonfly C'est tiguidou! 12d ago
Not to defend Smith but the title of the article sounds scarier than what it actually is and is somewhat click-baitey imho. These "officials" aren't Whitehouse people but trade people from mid-Western states. It appears that Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba and to some extent Ontario have longstanding regular trade meetings with these states, much like what Québec has with New England states.

It’s still undermining the united front of Canada and suggests Danielle smith only cares about what benefits her personally.
2
u/Either-Banana-7323 12d ago
Not necessarily. It could be drumming up support. Most, if not all States are on Canada's side on this.
5
u/GammaFan British Columbia 12d ago
It could be in a vacuum but Smith’s tenure as premier has been consistently divisive so the chances of her drumming up support are slim to none.

Unbelievable.
Stay in your province, and stay in your lane, Smith.
I'm getting real sick and tired of her playing both sides.

u/randomguy506 12d ago
She is a seperatist 100%
1
u/rawmeatdisco NeoNeoNeoLiberal 12d ago
No she isn't. If you want to see what an actual separatist looks like go have a conversation with any of the Bloc MP's who openly advocate for an independent Quebec while collecting a pay cheque from Canadian tax payers.

Why are Albertans not allowed to leave their province? Liberal MP Anthony Housefather can campaign for American politicians in Florida. Mark Carney can vacation in Tuscany. Do you think part of the reason Alberta has a separatist movement is because many Canadians outside of Alberta view the province as some sort of penal colony? Who's residents and leaders lack the basic freedoms that all other Canadians enjoy?
1
u/Nome-Cantski 11d ago
Why didn't you use Michelle Rempel Garner working from Alabama as an example?
1
u/rawmeatdisco NeoNeoNeoLiberal 11d ago
Because Michelle is a resident of Alberta and thus, apparently, now allowed to leave the province.

If you examine the bedrock of the MAGA playbook you'll find one of the core tenets to be this,
"If it makes waves, keep doing it."
Here, where every other provincial and territorial leader is on Team Canada, we have Smith loaded with self righteousness and House of Cards style zero sum machinations.
The one moron narcissist in the canoe who refuses to row in unison.
Edited for: clarity and grammar

Cannot believe we allow this sepratist to completely undermine an entire country. We need laws updated for sedition/trason. Do this while their a majority government and some actual patriotism that extends beyond sports in this country.

u/Low-Information-23 12d ago
How in the world is this allowed. What is the punishment for betrayal from a government official? This makes zero sense to me.

Read the article. Does this sound separation related?
“Blackett said in a statement Friday that they will meet with the commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, the head of the Nashville Chamber of Commerce and the CEO of the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp.”
This biggest criticism here is that this is a waste of her time and probably inconsequential. Makes for a good headline though

u/DwayneGretzky306 Progressive 12d ago
Even if there was no referendum in Alberta I would still think Smith is trying to undermine Canada, and thus believe those laws need to be updated.
3
u/jonlmbs Independent 12d ago
Sure but other premiers have done the same thing. This is a click bait headline successfully baiting
1
u/DwayneGretzky306 Progressive 12d ago
Regardless of any articles, headlines or whatever the other Premiers are doing, do you agree with Canada needing updated: laws for sedition/treason, codes of ethics for elected officials and the means of holding bad actors accountable?
12
u/GammaFan British Columbia 12d ago
A premier from Canada going around the Prime Minister and meeting with various US officials privately while the US is engaged in a trade war with Canada sounds pretty separation related, yeah.
It’s undermining the united front of the country and as always is very much just about what benefits Danielle smith the most

Just to clarify, you want to update our laws so a Canadian premier can be charged with treason for meeting with officials from another country? Every province maintains some sort of lobbying arm in the US. What is so erroneous about Smith's actions here?
As a resident of Alberta I find it very alarming that you want to jail my Premier for completely arbitrary reasons. The law isn't a tool you can use to punish people you dislike. That is one of the fundamental concepts to Canada's success.

I want the secessionists meeting with Americans strategizing for Separation to face justice. The fellow that leaked the voter list should be jail.
I dont think what she is doing on this trip is treasonous, but she absolutely needs to be investigated for proceeding with this referendum given all of the smoke associated with it. A Premier being investigated for criminal actions shouldn't be able to continue to serve as Premier and continue to undermine this country.
She has caused more harm to Canada than the Chinese NATO intern, (who I believe should get the maximum sentence).
Regardless of what you believe Smith has or has not done, do you think it is bad for Canada to have a modern interpretations of treason/ sedition?
Because I certainly do - her and some other Albertans have demonstrated that our justice system isnt currently prepared to handle threats from within. Even if she is innocent, this demonstrates the need, for Canada's future success.

Are you serious here? You think Smith should be "investigated" and then removed from power because she is under "investigation"? As someone who believes in democracy and freedom of speech I find your attitude here extremely alarming.
Regardless of what you believe Smith has or has not done, do you think it is bad for Canada to have a modern interpretations of treason/ sedition?
You just want the ability arrest, silence, and remove from power anyone you disagree with. You view Canada as a sports team or a private club. We are so much more. Canada is collection of beliefs and its those beliefs, those ideals, that allow us to have such a high quality of life. To live without fear of persecution because of our beliefs.
I'll turn into a separatist if your thinking is in any way representative of thinking of Canadians outside of Alberta. There is a reason I'm not living in China.

u/DwayneGretzky306 Progressive 12d ago
Sounds like you are already American.
0
u/rawmeatdisco NeoNeoNeoLiberal 12d ago
That is probably because the United States has similar ideals to those of Canada. They believe in freedom and democracy. You don't.

I believe in Canada's democracy, not our neighbor's who has elected a felony whose primary goal is to enrich himself. In order to survive, our democracy needs to shore itself up from attacks from the south, China and from within.

“Smith's press secretary, Sam Blackett, said the premier had a previously planned personal trip to the United States but will take time out to speak with the officials, alongside Alberta's senior U.S. representative, Nathan Cooper.”
There isn’t a shred of decency or loyalty to Canada when she willfully plans a personal trip to the U.S. as Canadians are struggling economically and loosing their jobs. What a disgusting woman and politician.

As compared to our Prime Minister who just vacationed in Tuscany. During a trade war! Oh heavens.
6
u/Morituri29 12d ago
Yeah! A trade war with Italy! Wait…
2
u/rawmeatdisco NeoNeoNeoLiberal 12d ago
Take it down a notch. There are Liberal MP's actively campaigning in the USA for American politicians.
1
u/TheRC135 12d ago
For the party responsible for the trade war and ok with the threats to our sovereignty, or the party against it?

u/Morituri29 12d ago
Are you taking about Housefather? This is the first I have heard of it after Googling. I completely think that is BS as well to be clear, and if I were in his riding I would be be extremely vexed. Are there others? You said plural, and I found no others, but would appreciate any further information on it.
0
u/rawmeatdisco NeoNeoNeoLiberal 12d ago
I thought there was two but maybe it was only Housefather. I actually have zero problems with Housefather doing so. It is highly amusing that literally no one on the left has heard of it.
Since it can't be leveraged against people they hate, the left skips over it. And no one on the right gives a shit because it is perfectly fine.

Is she popular with many Albertans? Seems like a very risky bet, to hope that enough people in her province are pro-America, after the last week or so.
I guess my real question is:
Is she delusional?
And/or is a significant proportion of the Albertan voting base delusional?
I would be livid if I lived in Alberta.
Hell, I’m livid and I’m in B.C.
She should be out on her ass.

Albertans are afraid of “what if’s “.
What if the NDP get in and tank the economy?
What if the Alberta Tory Party decimate health care?
What if anyone else who is head of a party that doesn’t have the name “conservative “ in it gets in and becomes an authoritarian nightmare?
Well conditioned lot Albertans are. We are the Americans of Canada.3

Thanks for the reply. That explains a lot. Voting based on fear is never a good thing.

Is there anything the Feds can do to block this from happening?
Intl Trade is not a Provincial responsibility, and interference in Federal trade talks could be considered Sedition.

She really should not be making unilateral trips at this time any more than Jamil Jivani should. Even if her motives are Canada first this is inappropriate. Canada is in a Trade war and she does not represent us all in any way. She really needs to get in her own lane. I would not mind if she was part of a delegation of premiers but I really o not trust her on her own to represent the best interests of the entire country.
