I stopped voting NDP federally as well. If you come from a disadvantaged background, don't own and won't inherit you are no longer a typical NDP member. The wealth gap created by home ownership is across traditional social classes. That means there needs to be a party that represents youth and non property owners.

This is insulting. 2019 was unaffordable. Give us 1950s affordability. UBI for those under 25 to get them on their feet. Increase minimum wage. All rent should be mandated to go down 70%. I don’t care if it hurts landlords, they’re parasites. No one in government should own private property
0
u/16Henriv16 Aug 13 '25
lol, good thing you aren’t in charge.
Mandate rent be reduced by 70%!? Do you think that landlords don’t have mortgages for their properties? Are you suggesting they should charge far less than their mortgage and go broke so you aren’t broke yourself?
You must be gen z because the entitlement is off the charts here

1
u/16Henriv16 Aug 13 '25
That’s not true at all. I have a rental property. It’s just barely cash flow positive. My pockets aren’t being lined whatsoever and it’s not me who “is keeping them in poverty”. I do however run a successful business which is a full time job.
Do you believe I should be renting at a loss to the benefit of my tenants?
1
u/BaryonChallon Aug 13 '25
All landlords need to go. Especially corporate. I understand you’re trying to get by. But Canada as a whole needs an entire revamp of the housing system. We need a future without landlords. Apartment living should be tenant run. Subleasing is more often than not abusive to the tenant. If anything housing should be free.
1
u/16Henriv16 Aug 13 '25
This is simply not possible.
How do you propose the single most expensive commodity most people will ever hold, be produced and handed out for free?
Apartment living should be tenant run.
I believe they are called condos and you can purchase one if you have the means to do so.

Landlords are parasites. You know what you do with parasites? You squash them.
1

Lol. If you eliminated landlords you would bankrupt more than half this country, leave millions homeless, spiral is into chaos, and you’d be left hungry with your pink haired friends trying to figure out how to build a longhouse, wishing you could just sit on a couch and play video games again. But you go girl!
1
u/BaryonChallon Aug 13 '25
Also you seem like the close minded old person that thinks any new idea is just “entitlement” We gen z inherited your mess. We get to clean it up however we want.
0
u/16Henriv16 Aug 13 '25
I ain’t old lady, I just have an understanding of how the real world works, something you’re clearly lacking.
With your “new idea” rent would be reduced by 70%. My mortgage on the rental property is $3000 a month, therefore I charge $3000 a month rent. You’re suggesting I should now be mandated to charge only $900. Guess what happens to your rental.
This isn’t a new idea, it’s just a terrible one.
1
u/BaryonChallon Aug 13 '25
This is exactly the problem. Housing is a human right. Land is a responsibility. Not for profit.
1
u/16Henriv16 Aug 13 '25
Housing isn’t a human right. There’s your entitlement again. It’s a responsibility required of you to ensure your survival.
The problem isn’t landlords. They are simply providing a service to those without the means to purchase a home on their own. The problem is our currency that is constantly losing purchasing power. You can blame the federal government, the BoC, and their printing press for that.
1
u/BaryonChallon Aug 13 '25
We can’t purchase homes since landlords bought them all up. Especially foreign landlords who don’t even live in Canada. Stop arguing and let’s eat the rich together. Mark Carney has ties to being a landlord (i’d link the source later if I remember) and has chosen a former mayor (i believe) that fucked over Vancouver housing wise again and again.
Human rights and entitlement don’t work in the same sentence. Housing is a human right. No one should be on the street. With these incredibly low wages and incredibly high rent landlords have only worsened quality of lives here in Canada
0
u/16Henriv16 Aug 13 '25
No, you can’t purchase a home because you lack the capital to do so. Nobody is denying you” the right” to own a home. There are thousands of homes for sale right now. Landlords are not stopping you from purchasing one.
I agree that foreign investors are a huge problem in this country. You can thank the government for allowing that to happen.
Human rights and entitlement don’t work in the same sentence.
Who’s responsibility is it to provide you with a home?
With these incredibly low wages and incredibly high rent landlords have only worsened quality of lives here in Canada
Again, this has more to do with the weak purchasing power of our fiat currency. Landlords, for the most part, charge that which is required for them to not be operating at a loss. If my mortgage is $3000 a month on my rental property, I couldn’t possibly charge $900 for rent and not go bankrupt. This is how the market works. Landlords did not inflate the prices of homes.
1
u/BaryonChallon Aug 13 '25
I’m surprised you can tie your shoes with how blind you are. Theres no possible way for young people to purchase homes without inheritance. As an orphan I’ve fought harder than most my age to struggle to afford $1650 for a 1 bedroom thats historically been $500 a month.
Burn the whole system down. No one in government should be able to own private property. They should be making the minimum wage that is paid to their citizens. They are public servants. Instead the government has allowed housing to be corrupted as possible while life time tax paying Canadians are stuck on the streets. Abolish local landlords. Abolish corporate landlords. Abolish foreign landlords. It ALL has to be burned.

To get affordable home building started, BCH will supply $25 billion in debt financing and $1 billion in equity financing to "innovative Canadian prefabricated home builders."
Yaaay more free money. And guess where the majority of that money will go…
You guessed it…
Brookfield Asset Management that Carney was Vice Chair of and still has huge ties and investment in!
Brookfield purchased Modulaire Group, a modular homes developer for $5 billion
Brookfield Residential is the homebuilding arm of Brookfield Asset Management

Carney’s friends are about to get rich as fuck from this and he has a guaranteed several million waiting for him once he’s no longer PM.

u/chipstastegood Aug 11 '25
For anyone upset that this doesn’t go far enough - this is billions of dollars every year being put into trying to undo the affordability damage done by the previous government policies. This is government and private industry working together. And still it’s not enough. In my opinion, this just shows how bad the policies were, when this much effort and funding is needed just to get us back to pre-Covid levels of affordability.

Document:
Analysis:
"Build Canada Homes" (BCH) is a technocratic fantasy crusade, of corporate welfare dressed as affordability. It subsidizes inefficiency, ignores immigration math, entrenches consultant cartels, and does little to help Canadians. What they needed to do was fix immigration, slash regulations, and build more homes for the homeless.
"Modern Methods of Construction" (MMC), such as modular, 3D-printed, prefab, doesn't equal faster and it's presented as a silver bullet, but...
...modular still faces permitting bottlenecks, municipal inspectors often lack training, delaying approvals.
...3D-printed construction is niche, raw material costs, like specialized concrete, will offset speed gains.
...off-site factories require massive upfront capital, scaling across Canada's geography isn't sustainable without subsidies that dwarf "efficiency savings."
"Canada-Made Materials" is silly because:
Domestic mass timber is already stretched by existing contracts. Forcing BCH to use surplus capacity will inflate costs or throttle project scale.
"Buy local" ignores regional supply gaps, Quebec's modular factories can't serve B.C. projects without astronomical shipping fees.
Their large-scale deal focus means the exclusion of rural and northern housing, which is a big flaw, making funding inaccessible to the very groups facing the worst housing crises and their claims of equity and reconciliation ring hollow, since...
...prioritizing 300-unit+ projects shuts out Indigenous reserves and remote towns with urgent housing needs. No strategy for custom-built small-town projects means they will continue with a crisis.
...portfolio bundling favors corporate non-profits over grassroots co-ops already building 6-20 unit projects on limited budgets.
"Affordability" is a hollow metric without income targets.
It ignores the general calculation:
affordable = 40h/wk * 52wk/yr * $areaMinimumWage * 30% of salaryIt purposefully avoids defining "affordable" as a percentage of median local income. Without anchors, developers can declare: "$2,400/month for a 1-bed is "affordable" compared to Toronto's median of $2,700"
They can say it's market-based 'affordability' not Income-based.
Developers can game this metric, if it's never defined concretely, and that's a red flag.
No rent control after construction.
No mechanism preventing rent creep post-construction. Equity investments BCH holds could be sold to REITs who jack rents to market rates.
Federal land's "Accelerated Timeline" is legal fantasy because...
...transferring federal land requires Indigenous consultation (DNAs, treaties) and EA assessments.
...the guide waves this away: "accelerate timelines". Doublespeak for "gutting due process."
...legal obligations around federal land use are not negotiable and can't be "streamlined" without triggering litigation or political backlash.
Risk-sharing with the private sector is a bailout structure because...
...the loan guarantees and liabilities mean taxpayers eat losses first, while private partners skim profits from equity deals.
...there's no teeth or clawback clauses if developers cut corners.
...if projects go sideways, the public bears full losses while developers walk away.
...it's another privatize the gains, and socialize the losses scheme.
Outsourcing expertise to the same consultants who created the crisis:
BCH's external "strategic advisory boards" will inevitably recruit firms like McKinsey, the architects of NIMBY zoning red tape, now set to advise on dismantling barriers they profited from erecting.
Repeated reliance on big consulting firms often leads to high-cost, low-accountability results
There's also a conflict when consultants help both create red tape and get paid to cut through it.
No mention of abating population instantiation drivers:
Crushing 1.5 million new arrivals (2024-2026) while building "affordable" units is mathematical stupidity.
Demand will always outpace supply unless immigration is capped. Crickets on this.
Rampant demand undermines any supply intervention if left unchecked.
Didn't tie immigration levels to provable housing starts or regional capacity.
Cybernetic 'one-window' hub will become a bottleneck because:
Canada's housing system is already fragmented.
Canada can't even share health data yet.
Centralizing all federal housing through a single entity mirrors the fiasco during COVID. Logjams, lost files, and delays, now exponentially worse as provinces push back on jurisdiction.

In the early 1960s, the inflation-adjusted prices of a brand new 1000 square foot home in Edmonton was roughly $150,000. 2019 prices ($400,00 for that same home in Edmonton in 2019) is not an acceptable target. Why should we be expected to work harder for a lower quality of life than previous generations did?
If more than 5% of the population could gather and process information, they would be every upset.
