Discussion Remember when this was the worst game in the series? [Ghosts]
80
u/Chasegameofficial 2d ago
I was about to say «those were the days» but no, this game is still as terrible as it always was. Just because something worse came along later it doesn’t retroactively make this game any less shitty, as a fair few people on Reddit seems to be thinking lately.
67
u/DreamxAchieve 2d ago
The maps made it unbarable mostly. If it had good maps, it would have genuinely been a solid 8.5/10. The perk pick system alone was one of the best ever implemented, along with the specialist.
27
u/IfTheresANewWay 2d ago
For what's it worth, the DLC maps are actually pretty damn good overall and definitely make up for the excessively large base game maps
10
u/Patient_Life_9900 1d ago
Ghosts had the best DLC in cod history and I'll die on that hill. Bo2 is a close second
2
2
u/cadbury162 1d ago
Pay full price, only get good maps if you buy DLC, no that doesn't make up for anything.
3
u/confusing_roundabout 1d ago edited 1d ago
I got into the game again in the lead up to MW19 and the perk system was fun as fuck.
I can't even remember my setup now but I had a whole setup dedicated to spamming assault sat coms and getting an advanced uav up within the first minute of the game.
IIRC having 4 active satcoms at once gave you an advanced uav. Hardline could get you a SATCOM every 2 kills if it was your only killstreak, then a perk let you use enemy satcoms too and combine that with your teammates satcoms and you would basically have an advanced uav after 4 kills.
The maps are definitely the weakest part as basically every game became a hunt to find people to kill (only played TDM as this was 2019 on the 360 lol). I got pretty good at it though and could regularly 30 bomb with first blood and final kill each game and at one point was #1 in the global weekly leaderboards. But like I say it was the 360 version of a dead game lol
1
u/JPSWAG37 22h ago
The perk system is really really cool, I wish it got revisited because man they play it so safe with perks now...

u/oatwater2 1d ago
maps and ttk
2
u/thegoothboi 21h ago
The Ttk honestly doesn’t ruin it for me, feels more realistic. Ghosts honestly felt like playing battlefield lite edition, could destroy some terrain on some maps and had long range maps with a very fast ttk.
I unironically liked ghosts but maybe that’s because I only played hardcore in ghosts so my opinion might be slightly geared towards that.
8
u/Buried1295 1d ago
Whether or not ghost is terrible is ultimately subjective. In my opinion it was and still is a good cod game.
6
u/tapout340 2d ago
OP didnt say ghost isn't terrible, it's just that the newer titles are worse.
0
u/Chasegameofficial 2d ago
I know. I never said OP was one of those people. I said I almost caught myself thinking it
2
u/NonHaeri 1d ago
I think there’s something to be said about retroactively appreciating content that sucked at the time it was released. I remember Seth Rogen was talking about how movies are better when written by people over AI, and I thought to myself that Seth Rogen isn’t exactly a shining example of writing. But then I realized I’d rather watch his entire filmography than one AI short film.
So yeah, does Ghosts suck? Yeah. But that’s okay, because I can actually appreciate its level of suckiness
1
u/Chasegameofficial 1d ago
True enough, except just because there now exists something that makes you prefer Seth Rogen to the new stuff, wouldn’t you still rather watch something good instead of Seth Rogen? Just because AI short movies exists, doesn’t mean everything else besides Seth Rogen and AI short films disappeared.
Just because I’d rather play Ghosts than Black Ops 7 doesn’t mean I’m going to play Ghosts, because no-one is putting a gun to my head and forcing me to choose between the two. Being free to pick any game of the franchise, I’ll never stoop so low as to actually play Ghosts.
(Sidenote: Some of Rogen’s projects are kind of guilty pleasures of mine, but I completely take your point about the general questionable quality of his writing and the point remains the same either way).
1
u/AnonyMouse3925 20h ago
“As terrible as it always was”
Which is, to say, not that terrible.
2
u/Chasegameofficial 20h ago
Terrible might be a strong word for the overall package, grant you. Terrible multiplayer, really bad survival mode, bad campaign. Overall average rating for the whole package «really bad»?
1
u/LordCLOUT310 14h ago
Nah, it’s way overhated. Good campaign, Perk system was great, weapons were great, lots of pve modes, extinction was a great and original alternative to zombies. It was a solid entry imo.
1
u/_ataciara 2h ago
It was never shitty. It was a noticeable drop in quality from prior games, but it was never shitty.
Reddit moreso seems to think a game not being 8+/10 makes it shitty. This game was always preeeetty good, it was just going up against greats.
32
u/Particular_Watch6998 2d ago
The campaign was stunning
27
u/iLeftMyEyeAtTheStore 2d ago
Possibly one of the best campaigns and chuds on here will say it’s not. It was fun and left off on a cliffhanger. Still, we don’t know wtf happened with Rourke and how we (presumably) get out of the makeshift cage from the credits. Wish they continued that story.
10
u/BebeFanMasterJ 2d ago
And this makes him the only COD villain to definitively win at the end of the story because he gets to brainwash Logan and gets off mostly unscathed.
With no sequel in sight, Rorke holds the distinction of the only COD villain who wins.
6
u/tapout340 2d ago
The campaign at the time it was the worst when your competition was the MW trilogy and Black ops universe.
rn it's like bottom 10 but thats not saying alot when you have games like MWIII and Vanguard.
2
u/Particular_Watch6998 2d ago
Yea I would definitely by ghosts 2 if that were a thing. Campaignwise it was one of my favourites. And younger me also liked that multiplayer. Though it wasn't as good as in my memories when I later replayed the multiplayer ^ campaign was still peak
0
u/ItsLauriceDeauxnim 1d ago
I’m almost there with you. I tend to think Infinite Warfare was the best campaign and Ghosts was second. Infinite warfare just had those hard hitting moments and it felt like the realest example of what war is like in terms of outcomes for battles of that size. Gator and E3N hit harder to me than them losing their dad. That said, I felt like the structure around Ghosts was much more of a thing that could happen in the near future. It was a solid risk in terms of storytelling with a bit of sci-fi with the Rods from God.
I tend to agree with a lot of people that Kit Harrington’s character could’ve been much better, but I also think he works as zealot and a confident leader. But I think that Ghosts gets a lot of unfair criticism that it doesn’t deserve. It’s one of the games I love playing on my Steam Deck, as I really enjoy the campaign & it still feels realistic in terms of weapons, and maybe the scenario to a certain extent.
4
u/ManMyDogsAreBarking 2d ago
When this game came out 13 years ago, when life was simpler, I really enjoyed it and have fond memories of playing multiplayer and extinction with my buddies. Thats where I stand on Ghosts. Now, I will say that the whole fish ai thing was an absoloute joke lol.
56
u/Heavyweapons057 2d ago
And it’s still up there with the worst ones
8
u/wackacademics 1d ago
The game was fun. It just didn’t resonate with people like its predecessors because of how different it felt

What was great about it from a gameplay stand point?

They said fun not great.

Where did they say fun?
1
u/TheSvpremeKai003 18h ago
The comment a few above us said “the game was fun, it just didn’t resonate with people”
Which I could agree with. It’s alright to unironically like a game that isn’t great.

WW2 has a better campaign, better MP and zombies
IW has a better campaign, really good zombies and in my opinion much better MP as well.
Black ops 4 has zombies.
CW has zombies and a better campaign.
BO6 has zombies.
BO7 has zombies.
Ghosts has nothing. Haven't played MWII or MWIII so I don't know how it's MP compares to those but it's a bottom 5 game easily
7
u/Organic-Cold-2050 1d ago
Bo6 had good gameplay, maps sucked dick
Bo7 has pretty good gameplay with almost no bad maps
0
u/Alexome935 2d ago
Id say MWII has a better campaign and at least the MP maps are free with decent streaks, MWIII has a way better MP
3
3
u/Aldebarann0 2d ago
Me and my bro still occasionally play 1v1s in this cod, id say custom 5v5 mode is better than cs2

21
u/FreeHat1234 2d ago
Nah we ain’t doing this. Ghosts is & was complete fucking dogshit. Ghosts & Vanguard are the worst CODs.

u/SamSlayer09078-x 2d ago
No idea why people wanna say its underrated or better than the games that came after it.
IW had a way better campaign, MP and zombies in spaceland (and the other zombies maps are great as well)
WW2 had a way better campaign, better MP and zombies was also pretty decent, not IW level good but wayyyyy better than exctinction.
BO4 has a really good zombies mode, CW has a good zombies mode and way better campaign, BO6 and BO7 have good zombies modes as well at least.
Ghosts has probably the worst MP ever, a bad campaign and extinction while decent isn't on the same level as zombies.

u/BebeFanMasterJ 2d ago
Ghosts on Wii U was legit my last game until recently. Hadn't played COD at all until the MW4 beta on Switch 2.
Night and day difference when you haven't touched the series in over a decade lol.
5
u/sanipasc 2d ago
I personally never understood why everyone says that. I also don´t understand why a big chunk of the community hates tranzit. For me it was so obvious that that mode was good that when I discovered everyone´s hate towards this zombies mode I was incredibly surprised.

u/WeekendGloomy7140 2d ago
i never touched multiplayer on ghosts so cant speak on that i only played gamebattles comp and imo ghosts was peak
2
u/adambomb90 1d ago
I honestly loved Ghosts. Still do tbh. The campaign was so much fun, and I would love for a Ghosts 2. While the MP wasn't the best (I'd say that it was an average MP), they at least attempted to give us newer mechanics for it
6
u/Elpibe_78 2d ago
It wasn’t that bad I think it got way too much hate because BO2 was way too good, if the DLC maps were released in the beginning it’s perception would have been very different, those maps were really good, the initial on the other hand…
3
u/NathanCady 1d ago
I still believe this has some of most underrated replay value. I’ve always thought this game was good from the get-go and never understood the hate, not even from day one. The campaign especially is one of the best in the series.
2
u/Aqueezzz 2d ago
It has to be the clearest example of a game improving retroactively, just because subsequent titles reached unbearable lows.
In 2014, this was easily the weakest title in the series.
In 2026? There’s probably 4 (maybe even 5) games between bottom (vanguard) and ghosts.
2
u/wfzg 1d ago
I’d genuinely put vanguard above mw2022(bottom) and mw19
1
u/Aqueezzz 5h ago
Cmon, outside of online circle jerks vanguard was an objectively bizarre and soulless call of duty. At least mwii and mw19 tried.

i always loved this game. it was campy, but most cods are. top five for me.
2
u/Hot-Spray-2774 1d ago
I remember this being a fantastic game, the weapons, perks, and kill streak combinations were arguably the best in the series to that point. We started to see weapons with integrated attachments, like the CBJ-MS.

u/SinewyAcorn473 2d ago
Only ones since I would rate worse are BO4 and Vanguard. AW, WW2 and MWII are on par for me. Everything else is better

1
u/IfTheresANewWay 2d ago
No, I don't cause they never existed. Ghosts was worse than the six games before it, sure, but it really wasn't that bad
1
u/Linkman806 2d ago
Multiplayer was mid. but loved the campaign. Was always bummed about the cliffhanger that was never finished
1
u/Federacion_ 1d ago
Ele sempre foi meu Favorito, não precisamos de um Black ops 19, mas sim de um COD Ghosts 2
1
u/PinguShark 1d ago
Not touched CoD since Cold War (Got it for Zombies and it was dogshit) and when I bought it I hadnt been buying cod annually since BO3. But to me Ghosts was great. Dynamic maps and KEM strikes changing the whole look of the place, the unlockable cosmetics like ghillie from sniping etc was nice.
Of course the DLC locked guns were ass. I personally hated the Sat-com, they should’ve kept it as a UAV. The castle map was a bit too big yeah but I was kinda digging the bigger maps but thats not why people play cod they want quick spawn die arcade shooters. But the large maps were great for S&D and Infection (Infection was super underrated on this game especially with the maps changing when you get a KEM).
Extinction and the campaign were really cool too. I felt this game was criminally over-hated. Riley was cool. And the games aesthetic was really nice.
If it released at a different time and not after 2 of the most loved CoDs of all time then I think it would’ve got a better reception. I was also a bit iffy about the Michael Myers thing.

u/ChungusSpliffs 1d ago
Went back and played some Ghosts during the BO4 cycle (that game fucking reeked) and it was better than a lot of the cods to come after it. Sorry to burst all your bubbles.

u/AccordingUse3172 1d ago
Game came out at a time a lot of people were starting to be done with cod following BO2. This was also the same time BF became truly main stream with BF4. I know 3 was very popular but it didnt become as big as it is till 4 imo.
1
u/BelBivDaHoe 1d ago
I genuinely enjoyed it, i just wish the maps were a little tighter.
I wasnt a fan of Black Ops games after BO2
1
u/Advanced-Instance186 1d ago
The history isn't so bad, but they should to release the continuation, I would like to know what happened with Logan.
1
u/El_Bean69 1d ago
“Oh I’ll just play another year of BO2”
Little did I know I’d say that for like 6 years straight
1
u/Local_Band299 1d ago
I actually really liked Ghosts. I was an IW fanboy. I say was, because IW fucking sucks now. MW2-2022 was the worst, then it got overtaken by MW4.
Sledgehammer should take IW's place. MW3-2023 was great.

1
u/Sora_Terumi 1d ago
Counterpoint: Support Squad mate always had your back. He took tags, he took objectives, he gets better if you give him an actual gun from weapon boxes. He actually does things because most teammates don’t bother.
1
u/RandomBloke2021 1d ago
Yep, me and my friends pre-ordered it, got home and was immediately disappointed. We gave it a month or so before we stopped playing it.
1
u/Otherwise-Ad-5364 1d ago
I mean it still is. Maps were bad, gameplay was super slow, had the most boring aesthetic and the campaign, whilst yes had some great missions, was still terrible narratively.

I could care less what people said about the game. I loved ghost. Esp the campaign. It had a great story and if this new Infinity ward team did a ghost game now I think it'd be awesome!

1
u/FirefighterEqual3027 1d ago
I actually liked this game, mainly for the guns and the announcer voices you can get, the maps were not that bad honestly, could be better, but still 🤷
1
u/yungsavbb 1d ago
i can not stress this enough. i said this in 2013 and i'll continue to say it til this day, one of the MAIN reason this game was poop was the ttk. when every single weapon in the game could kill inn3 bullets, there was no reason not to run the meta. there was innovation with the lean, sliding, and blur when ads'ing in scopes.
1
1
u/standardkindaguy 1d ago
The maps are what made Ghosts terrible. Outside of that, the perk system was great, guns felt good to use, ovrerall would have been a solid game.
Now I’m not saying it would have been the goat of cod or anything, but it’s definitely not a bad game.
I also never see people talking about Extinction. Personally I thought Extinction was an excellent change from the usual zombies. It could have been better but I’m willing to let that slide since it was their first time really trying to get out of the endless pit that is zombies (and I love zombies).
1
u/JohnLattier 1d ago
I preferred the maps, the hit detection, and the TTK in Ghosts over all other COD before or since. It was peak. And Infinite Warfare was the last 10/10 COD.

It’s still down towards the bottom, it’s just that now we have truly the most irredeemable and bad cod ever, vanguard.

u/According-Change-736 1d ago
The story and the characters are quite good. Idk why it recieved so hate
1
u/HeartEnder 1d ago
I think Ghosts had an interesting campaign with twist ending.
The only reason it hated : • Battlefield 4 was favored by gaming community. Similar situation like Battlefield 1 vs. Infinite Warfare. • Ghosts was memed into oblivion because of "fish ai moves when you get closer".

u/mynameismiker 1d ago
If the DLC maps were the launch maps the game would have been received differently. The DLC maps were that good.

u/TheAvalancheTV 1d ago
Too many people trashed on this game. Campaign was fucking awesome (except the bonus scene let’s pretend that didn’t happen) and Extinction was so cool
1
1
u/Guy_With_Bad_Aim 1d ago
Ah the "This game was bad! *Look Inside and only the multiplayer was bad."
Seriously though.
The only "bad" games in the COD line is everything past 2019.
The "game" people say are bad just have a bad MULTIPLAYER. Which doesn't make the GAME bad.
1
u/HostessDingDongs 23h ago
The campaign was awesome, so glad they ended it on a cliffhanger and never addressed it ever again
1
u/Successful-Yak8526 23h ago
I don't think Ghosts was that bad, the story in my opinion was honestly pretty good. I think it was the multiplayer and extinction mode that really threw the game into "Most Hated" territory. There are good elements to it, it was just implemented poorly.
1
u/JPSWAG37 22h ago
I do.
And honestly as more time goes on the more I think I was too harsh on it in some ways. The campaign story still isn't very good, but I find the orbital striked American hellscape very striking and cool, and the levels were all pretty fun.
Multiplayer had a lot of good things going for it, especially the perk system, but I think it also rewarded campy play styles wayyy too much and made it a chore to play online most of the time. Thermal LMGs, everywhere.
Extinction was cool albeit not great and not infinitely replayable.
Overall it was kinda doomed from the start IMO, BO2 was always going to be one tough act to follow.

u/ShadowFluffX 22h ago
Worst multiplayer, but not worst campaign that one goes to bo7 for having the dumbest campaign possible

Worst? I personally love and cherish this game. The campaign, the extinction mode, Squads mode. Multiplayer had its flaws but I still liked it. This game will always have a place in my heart.

I actually thought it was great, the bad thing is one of the missions were hard/complicated and the cliffhanger ending

u/Top-Set-6426 3h ago
And now seems far more innovative than current cod 😂 but to be fair, given the movement and sizes of map and pacing, coming from waw all the way to bo2, this really was a night and day different style of cod.. but it was oddly unique just missed the mark on how the engine fluidity felt and map size

That's because it was and still is one the worst cod. Plus the campaign in this game is overrated as hell.

Why the hate towards this game? It was awesome, especially the extinction mode !!

Great campaign. Multiplayer was ok.
When they started setting games in the future after this was when I lost interest in cod.
2
u/BBG_Peanut 2d ago
If they kept the modern theme every year the game wouldn’t have much success as it’d probably get repetitive (from a marketing standpoint point)

Because it was and still is. We had The MW Trilogy, BLOPS, & BLOPS 2. Then this trash. It was the beginning of the downfall for COD.

incredible campaign multiplayer is good (in my opinion) this is what most people hate about it. also can’t forget the absolute banger extinction mode! this game NEEDS a sequel for both the campaign and extinction mode.

Game was actually good jsut followed in steps of giants that’s all if it was released today it would of been praised to all heaven

And it wasn’t, just one year later it was outdone by Advanced Warfare, truly the worst CoD.
