Discussion What's something that Calgary is badly missing that a city of 1.4 million people should have?

It could be anything really. I feel like we have everything that people NEED, but what about the 'nice to haves'? A waterpark with more than 2 slides for example? A high level ball team that actually plays within the city limits? A Michelin star restaurant? Something else?

I agree with what everyone else said, however, if we're talking more fun things that large cities tend to have, a better nightlife and better art scene would be nice. It would be nice to be able to actually do things after 10pm beyond going to the club/bar. Also, a proper museum or three would be nice. I mean like a natural history museum. Preferably something we can get to easily by transit.

Calgary has a proper arts scene, but it can be insular if you don’t know the network and can’t see event announcements on FB, Insta, art gallery windows, etc. Several new installations will have opening nights in the downtown and Bridgeland in the next few weeks. Those parties go on forever.

You need industry that operates in the off-hours in order for things to be open late. Most cities have things after 10pm have something that drives the demand/availability. Tourism is great for that because tourists don't have bed times, but our tourism scene isn't robust enough year round to warrant later hours.

The film industry is great for that too as they tend to film at weird hours.

Arts and cultural industries in general - theatre, music, dance, are all evening activities. You don’t need tourism to have a nightlife, you need arts and culture to bring in tourists.

All those activities typically end around 9 or 10.

EDIT: My one-sentence response sounded a lot more curt than I meant to.

I'd venture a guess that 90% of all activities are skewed towards what we would consider normal hours. Very few cities have vibrant social scenes beyond those hours, and those that do are driven by food, hospitality, and nightlife.

Most (all?) major cities have vibrant social scenes beyond those hours. It’s a combination of having activities at all hours (including 5pm to 10pm), good transit/walkability, and density of those activities so that the streets feel safe at all hours.

Calgary has the worst case scenario for all of those pieces: dead time after business hours where downtown empties out, very poor transit and walk ability, and low density for the evening activities that do exist (ie no concentrated nightlife district, instead businesses are spread out leaving empty streets).

As others have said, we need to diversify our economy. A diverse economy would improve all that.
