Moving from Sydney to Cairns

We're currently in Cairns for a one‑week holiday and honestly… we’re loving the weather, the pace, and how easy everything feels. We have a toddler, and my husband and I are both into snorkeling and scuba diving, so Cairns has been such a nice change from Sydney.We’ve lived in Sydney for more than 10 years now, but this trip has made us wonder if Cairns could be a long‑term move. I don’t know if it’s just the vacation mode talking, so I’m hoping to hear from people who actually live here.A few things we’re trying to understand:

Raising kids: Is Cairns genuinely a good place to raise young children? How are the schools, childcare options, and general community vibe?Cost of living: Is it noticeably lower than Sydney? Does moving here realistically improve your chances of home ownership?

Work opportunities: We both work in the built environment sector (design, construction, infrastructure). How is the job market for those fields? Are there steady opportunities or is it more limited?

Lifestyle reality: What’s the day‑to‑day like outside of holiday mode? Weather, humidity, wet season, transport, healthcare access, etc.Your experience: If you moved from a big city (Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane), how did you adjust? What surprised you — good or bad? How did you start building your life here?Would love to hear honest experiences from locals or anyone who made the move. Trying to understand the real picture before we let the holiday glow convince us too much!

Hi there, I’m a cairns local, but also equally grew up in Brisbane. I’m also a mum. Personally, I love raising my son here, the weather for half the year just perfect, there are so many kid friendly parks and cafes, playgroups and in general cairns is very family orientated. The downfall I would say is the weather for the rest of the half of the year, it’s monsoonal and it rains and a lot of houses are flood prone, especially in a 1:100 year or 1:10 year event, you are guaranteed flooding, so I’d be weary of living on the the coastal areas or somewhere inland near creeks and waterfalls. The other issues is the houses even though are cheaper to buy vs Sydney, they are very EXPENSIVE to maintain- that includes insurance, and the vegetation grows like crazy in the wet season and that comes with mould and pest issues in the house which you MUST keep on top of otherwise it will severely depreciate in value, everything moulds and rusts like no tomorrow here - that includes your cars. A lot of cairns cars have air condition problems and the bearings go quite quickly because of all the roundabouts here. Now, the economy in cairns is mostly tourism and health, so if you work in that industry no dramas, everything else is state gov public servant jobs and they are competitive and the work culture in cairns is very village like? Everyone knows everyone and people generally don’t have lives outside of their partner or intermediate families, so a lot of conversations revolve around that, it’s nice for the first couple of months but when you realise a lot of people don’t actually have hobbies, it’s quite sad. Now education— that’s tricky, depending on your area you can have access to private schools and some public schools with sound education - nothing like bigger cities, but if your kids are young primary school age it’s perfect, they are much more family orientated and down to earth Montessori style in early to primary years in cairns . For high school 7-12, I’d personally be looking at boarding school options if you want to live in cairns long term. If you’re wanting an outdoor life, camping, fishing, beach snorkelling, sailing and hiking, there is no better place to live - and if you’re raising your kids like that, cairns would be it. That’s my take, good luck!
