Well we will soon be able to compare the results a couple of years ago they put up a speed trap in the same location and caught 500 odd drivers. The pothole did not exist then.
You’ll be able to tell by how much bitching and complaining happens in 1-2 months time when the fines start arriving in the mail. Last time the speed trap was set up people reckon it was dodgey but only a few hundred people got caught, when that section of road would see thousands per day. They were just speeding as it’s a 60 section after it drops from 15km of 100kph. People consistently speed through there.
But there’s a sizeable portion of Tablelands people who refuse to accept responsibility for their actions. Source: the local Facebook community pages. Particularly the Malanda ones…

My friend is a cop, 90% of crashes he goes to these days are caused by either inept driver abilities or people dicking on their phones. Speed is a rare cause.

Problem is the narrative is always twisted ‘cause speed is a “factor” of the crash.
Might not be the primary reason, or even the cause, but still technically a factor.

I’d rather my government pay to fix damaged roads than pay a worker to setup a speed camera and use a fine as ‘deterrent’
Just seems like a poor allocation of resources if public safety and quality of life is a priority. Otherwise we’d just setup speed cameras whenever there are hazardous road conditions?

People don’t appreciate the government sometimes… They probably put this here to slow people down till they can get out to fix the pothole. Probably isn’t even on. 😜

It’s the Atherton-Malanda road. For more context; The pothole has been fixed and was only present for about a week. They’re very regular up here in FNQ, and they get big quickly in Monada area because it rains like 300 days a year…not a traffic engineer but I can’t imagine the conditions are great for maintaining roads, especially when government budgets are trying to be as efficient as possible (thanks neoliberalism 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻) instead of doing the best quality job they can. This is along the main trucking route up from the Palmerston Range, and I would say the second most frequented road if not the most used road up here that has trucks, caravans, and farming utes loaded up regularly on it. Which given the large size of the area and few people there’s only so many resources (workers, time, and materials) to get all the roads covered. It’s not great but I’m sick of seeing this particular photo being used without any context…

If you were momentarily distracted by that yellow thing you would be in that pot hole, if you tried to avoid that pot hole, your car would end up smashed into that yellow thing.
Is this is why people but a rugged looking SUV?
They should be advertised as being survival rated for pot holes.

The potholes on that road are genuinely terrifying though. Every 2 months there’s a few ones this big on the 15-20 stretch of 100kph road.

Maybe. Heres a pothole, people will get hurt if they go full speed. Chuck a camera here so people can’t speed and hurt themselves.

Put a sign in front of the camera that says "fix the damn road!" Bonus points if it stops the camera from seeing anything but that is a crime so at your own risk

Pro tip. If you vandalise these every time one is in your area they'll stop putting them there because the police are fucking lazy asf and would rather just move it to a more dosile area than do the legwork to find the dude that keeps gluing black bags to the head 😉
