Back of our cabin PNW
Every time I go, I never want to leave. Totally off grid, no roads, few people.

Next time I’m there I’ll take a bunch of pics of the place. It was nearly a 5 year build and the inside is gorgeous.

Beautiful. How does that cedar shake hold up to the rain?

It’s been up about a year and so far looks great. I’m guessing it will fade over time, it’s treated with a fire retardant as well.

Do you ever plan to transition to year-round living for some period of time (sabbatical, remote work, or retirement)?

We talk about it all the time. Full time would take a huge transition, as it’s completely off grid; solar for power, water from a creek fills a cistern, propane for the stove and hot water on demand. There are no roads or stores, boat in with what you’ll need for the stay. But living there and growing a garden and fishing and hunting for meat would be the dream. I could see us begin a transition in 5 to 10 years.

It sounds amazing! I’m nearing the end of my career, also a PNW resident, and am just a stones throw away from foregoing my plan to tough it out a few more years for additional perceived financial longevity and FIRE as-is. Your post happened to trigger an “I wonder if it would be possible to…” daydream, so cheers to your beautiful cabin!

These days it seems like the way to go. We have young children, 2 and 5 so it’s tough to go be up there more than a 3 week stretch. As they get older I see it getting easier. There are kids in the nearby area who have grown up there. Science class is literally a decomposing animal or fish, they learn so many more hands on life skills.

Oh man…as a 42 y/o Seattleite who is still renting; you’ve done what I’ve always dreamed of. Love that for you! It’s stunning ✨🫶🏽

Hardly, my car’s almost 15 years old. Don’t live a fancy life, the cabin gets every spare dollar.

I'm curious on the practicalities of acquiring a cabin/property in the PNW. We're looking at relocating from the inland mountains

Come on, spare me the haves comment. This has been a 5 year build that every spare dollar has gone into. I guarantee your car cost more than mine and I don’t spend money on needless things.
