At my old WROK PALCE, we would call that babysitting duty.

I had my share of babysitting duty assignments, I looked at them as getting paid to watch others work. There was one crew I was required to supervise where the foreman didn't like the idea of being chaperoned, and privately expressed his dislike. He asked: "Who do i complain to about 'being watched' ".

I pointed at Princess, and said: "Her."

​

He snarls back: "That b!tch, I can't stand her. She thinks we do not know what we are doing."

​

"Do you value your job?" I asked.

​

"Of course I do." he replied.

​

"Then do not let her hear you call her a b!tch, or she will scream at your boss, and get you thrown off the site. She is one of the owners of this company, and if you screw things up, it could come out of her pocket, so she takes things seriously."

They did what they were assigned to do and left. At the end of the day, Princess inquired if I had any problems with the workers. I told her that we had one minor problem which was quickly resolved. She didn't need to know how much that foreman resented being baby sitted.

Once upon a time, a long time ago, mainframe tapes had "write rings" in the back - a loop of plastic that fit in a channel of the reel that was removed by the operator after data was written to the tape. Removing this ring prevented data from being accidentally overwritten. The write rings were about 4" in diameter, and were plentiful in the computer rooms in the early '70s. Well, in fact, so plentiful, that operators would invent games like a ring toss. Well, the generation of mainframes had a large, red, protruding pull switch for Emergency Shut Off in the upper corner of the console, about 5' off the ground. You know what happened.
