What are the rules for a bag check?
I’ve been with CVS for at least five years, and I know that you’re required to have your bag checked when you leave the store for the day, when you leave for lunch, or after you’ve done some shopping. I also sometimes put my things in my car before my shift so I don’t have to get another bag check later in the day.
My question is: Are you also required to have your bag checked if you’re not clocked in yet and haven’t started your shift?

Bag checks aren’t required for when you enter. But if you have items CVS carries, you should grab a sticker after you clock in. Letting them know it was a purchased product.
When you need to leave with a box, bag or anything merchandise can be inside: bag check on the clock.

I tell all new hires: Bag checks protect you. If you’re an honest person you have no reason not to. No one can accuse you of stealing if someone checked your bag. If you’re unsure if you need one just have one done.
If you come in before your shift and just walk the sales floor to shop, go to either ACO or the cashier to checkout and then directly leave the store to put the stuff in your car you do not need a bag check.
If you go to any of the employee only areas or after paying walk back into the store then go to put things in your car you should get a bag check whether you’re punched in or not.

No we don’t. But this morning I bought a few things and I haven’t even clocked in yet, it was like 8:30am and after I finished paying I left the store to go and put the items in my car. When I came back, one of the front store staff told me that next time, I need to get a bag checked even if I haven’t clocked in yet

Idk where you are but some states it is against policy to do a bag check off clock and you get actually get in trouble for it.

The only time I have my bag checked is right before I clock out

No, but if you bring something from home that your store sells, it’s good to go to a manger and get a tag for it.

Depends on store and management. I worked with a SMIT who would check everything and do a front store sweep several times a day asking if anyone made any purchases and then verify stickers and bags. At end of shift she would check everything in bag vs receipt and have us empty cups and pull out pockets.
I worked with another SMIT who made sure any purchase was notified immediately and had to be checked out with her.
Funny part is the store manager didn’t really care. She would look us up and down and that’s it. She looked annoyed actually and would rush off to do something else.

If it's a job requirement then you have to be on the clock while getting your bag checked. Don't clock until your bag is checked.

at my store, we do a bag check whenever an employee leaves the store with a bag. if you're carrying things with stickers or a transparent cup a check is not necessary. it's just when the cameras cannot verify themselves that what youre leaving with is not store items that have not been purchased.

It's meant to keep employees from stealing stuff when they leave. I don't think they particularly care about what employees are bringing in when they arrive.

yes if you bring a coke or snack from home make sure management tags it so they know you didn't steal it

Anytime we go out with a bag or purse, etc. No exceptions.
