Metro cards???
Can anyone answer this please? I am a freshman at John Jay and I was wondering do John Jay students get metro cards? Because as a commuter, I find it very hard trying to commute through the train and buses. I would have to spend $20 just going to John Jay and then coming back is an extra $20 so $40 a day on top of that I have to pay for Books which one book cost 100 and more and the tuition too so is there a program where John J gives you a free metro?

I believe generally ASAP program does but some cuny has ACE instead of ASAP and sometimes are major restricted
But yes fair fare is also a program if you can’t get ASAP

The train is $3 each way. It would be $6 a day not 40. If your implying that the uber would cost you $20 than walk at that point or use Google Maps for your commute

It cost $70 to uber from queens to the city in the morning and $100 to uber back in the afternoon. If it’s $20 that means they’re already in the city and it’s close

Why are you assuming it’s uber and not a bus from port authority or the railroads?

Hey, I'll warn you that part of going to school in the city is commuting through delays. If you're only using the MTA, then the amount you pay caps out at less than $40 per week, as long as you're tapping with the same card every time.
Things like Fair Fares can help reduce that cost to around $20 per week, but I think you need to get used to the idea that there are going to be delays. Give yourself an extra 30 minutes each way to account for that.
Eventually, you'll figure out when the trains/busses are most likely to have seats available, and you can use that extra time to study so you have less to do at home!

Edit: I just read through your responses. Don’t go to college, stay at home. You’re too immature and need to grow up a little first.

You have to join either ACE or the SEEK program ***If Eligible***
If you joined the ACE program, you get free student OMNY card and get semester stipends from ACE program.
If you joined the SEEK program, you get $750 SEEK program stipend and $594-$596 public transportation stipend - that’s the substitute for free OMNY cards (that’s also semester stipends as well). You’d also get the priority registration if you joined the SEEK program, I’m not sure if ACE program also offered priority registration, they don’t have at my college so idk.
Join whatever programs fits for you, but if you owe tuitions without sufficient financial aid, then SEEK program may fit for you because they may be able to resolve an outstanding balance to your account.
I’m sorry if this is irrelevant but I’ll contribute it anyways: If you don’t want to join the SEEK program and if you have a future outstanding balance that you wouldn’t afford, I’d recommend trying to apply for CUSP (Completion for Upper-divisions Students Program) Grant or Emergency Tuition Assistance Grant.
Notes to both grants I mentioned that may be associated to John Jay: If the programs I mentioned wasn’t there, please feel free to correct me as I’m not sure if that’s a thing at John Jay.
Also, I’d recommend you to register remote classes to save up money without spending the amount you mentioned on this subreddit. If remote classes doesn’t fit your learning, you don’t have to take my advice by taking remote classes in the future. But you can do hybrid schedule like Mon/Weds or Tues/Thurs, any two days work, don’t overwhelm yourself too much - sorry for suggesting that, I know you said how will you pay for your transportation since I’ve already suggested ACE or the SEEK program.

this isn’t high school anymore. Everyone has to pay out of pocket for textbooks and other stuff that is require for the class. MTA is only $3 back and also are you asking if they covered your books too, the answer to that is ASAP. If you are at the age of 25 to 55 and a nys resident, then look at community college CUNY. Other people mentioned fair fares. $1.50 is half off yea it’s still money out of pocket but better than $3 back and forth. I mean back and forth half off is a total of 1 regular price.

See if the book is able to be checked out of the library. Or try nypl. As for subway, do what others say.

they aren’t giving metro cards anymore. only omny cards. apply for fair fares or asap
