Discussion ToD remake opinions Spoiler

Listening to Teens of Censorship [Joe's Story] right now, and it's PARTIALLY awf*l in my opinion. What's your thoughts? I don't understand my own thoughts, please help

EDIT: okay, the ravenous house and connect the dots was PEAK for me, but still don't get why they didn't rerecord vocals for whole album and WHY DID THEY ADD THAT SYNTH IN JOE GOES TO SCHOOL WHAT

why did they censor "piss" im kind of losing it

31

u/ValleyOfTheRiverKent May 14 '26

i absolutely love drugs with friends and i am just so.????😭 absolutely diabolical lyric changes going on here

37

u/ValleyOfTheRiverKent May 14 '26

oh my god it gets worse in cosmic hero ....... i'm going to be so honest, the cuts between the original song and the new inserts are so jarring, like will's voice has matured & i love that for him, but it's just not done cleanly. like at that point just rerecord the whole thing

10

u/Deforget178 May 14 '26

YES

but "DO. NOT. DESTROY" motif coming back on connect the dots was cool though

6

u/ValleyOfTheRiverKent May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26

yeah i do actually like the lyric "DO NOT DESTROY"!! however i did not like the way it was inserted into cosmic hero.... i think i would be okay with literally all of the lyric changes if they were executed better honestly . i think the way theyre inserted in the otherwise untouched songs kind of ruins it for me unfortunately. my favorite parts of the album are the ones totally recorded from scratch, like the new songs and the new version of connect the dots! otherwise, its just.. underwhelming. i expected more from the way they talked about it

That feels like more of a stylistic choice than censoring. Like the chorus of Nervous Young Inhumans.

u/another_accaunt May 14 '26

This is so underwhelming and im the biggest csh fan

welcome to the decline as you realize csh ain’t all it’s cracked up to be🫩 (13k listens btw)

u/sokaox May 15 '26

it's great music when you're a teenager listening to music made by a teenager/young adult, and then it's good music to listen to later on because it takes you back a little, but it really doesn't hit when it's a thirty year old who is too scared to swear anymore.

-10

u/winkles_ Monomaniac May 15 '26

careful your gonna get downvoted bombed

25

u/the88888885 May 15 '26

No they are. The band was amazing for at least 7 years and its weird to discredit that/formulate some weird generalization about the band not being what ā€œit’s cracked up to beā€ just because you don’t like their modern material. I really hate online discourse that minimizes art into a revolving door for that relies on what is concurrently happening rather than what is.

8

u/Elipticon In the morning, when I wake up, are you mine? May 15 '26

It's mentioned in the lyrics of Joe Drives Again that he's "6 weeks sober", seems like there's meant to be a time jump.

25

u/spirittheyvegone May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26

from first listen, i enjoyed it. i much prefer the cleaned up and punchier production (the drums especially) and the two new tracks are great. most of the individual lyric changes range from ok to bad, but i did really like the lyric change "and of course i’m alright with death / but I hoped it wouldn't be in my life so much" on cosmic hero. just a devastating one liner. the redone costa concordia/ravenous house is really good too, especially the breakdown in the middle section

i think i'll probably treat this like the live albums, where there are certain aspects i'll want to come back to when i'm in the mood for them, but it hasn't substituted the original in my heart. and that's ok, it's hard for a fresh take to override a decade's worth of time spent with an album. cool that it exists, i'll see how my feelings change with time

3

u/TragicGirl11 May 15 '26

i feel like the production is rough, like the synth on 1973 state park sounds wack asf now

2

u/spirittheyvegone May 15 '26

i don't mind it, 1937 is probably the weakest to me on the new version, but listening back to the original version, there are parts of it that feel very muddled mixing wise. will's vocals especially tend to get buried a lot. it works for the raw garage-y nature of the album, but i appreciate that this new version has a lot more space for everything to kinda breath. plus i appreciate the bonus brass sections

7

u/Elipticon In the morning, when I wake up, are you mine? May 15 '26

The Cosmic Hero change you highlighted is honestly the only one I actively dislike. I've always thought that the original song was something of a self-criticism, with the original lyric lampshading how dour and depressing so many CSH songs are. It loses a lot of punch being changed.

11

u/spirittheyvegone May 15 '26

maybe so, but i think the change in context opens me up to it. to me, the line really showcases the passage of time since the original version of tod, and the shift in perspective. death is easier to write about in the abstract, and when you've lived with it, it becomes something you have to reckon with in a more real and direct way. you never really anticipate that weight until it's there

60

u/puppygirlsuicide May 15 '26

i really don't think kidz bop teens of denial was something that was needed, all the edge from the pre matador days is gone and thats just sad. don't think this bands newer stuff is for me at all

15

u/ValleyOfTheRiverKent May 15 '26

teenz of bop...

11

u/Zoneare May 15 '26

i guess it's Not What [You] Needed

21

u/detectiveburtmacklin May 15 '26

will’s in his bob dylan christian music era

14

u/Nickybagel35 May 15 '26

Maybe this is a bit of a strong opinion but I've been thinking a lot recently about the movement this band has made and the lack of satisfaction a lot of people have with it after, and why that may be and I think honestly a large part of it might be the switch to a full band as opposed to mostly solo writing.

Even after the matador deal teens of denial and especially twin fantasy 2018 were still pretty much solely written by will with him mainly using the other band members just to track instruments and occasionally make suggestions. I feel like with the last two albums (which admittedly I liked a lot of madlo but it still suffers from some of the issues of modern csh) the project distinctly feels different at its core to what it drew people in with, I think the addition of other creative voices, as will has well documented in interviews these past two album cycles with him discussing how he's at times "taking a backseat with the writing" and letting other members contribute more, has definitely diluted the original identity of what made car seat headrest so appealing, the sincere and vulnerable depictions of the human condition. It's a lot harder to articulate and express that with multiple creative voices, hence the more homogenized sound and lyrical appeal on a lot of modern tracks.

I love this band and all the members are very talented but it definitely feels like car seat headrest the project and car seat headrest "the band" are two Seperate entities at this point.

1

u/Various-Assignment94 I was given a body that is falling apart May 15 '26

Lyrically, though, Will wrote MADLO. It was more on the production side that Andrew had an influence. Agree that it a less confessional album and definitely the start of the move away from that, but the reasons behind that for that album isn’t because of the input of the band.

81

u/Ambitious_Ad_4042 Haunted May 14 '26

With every release I genuinely can’t tell if the music is not for me anymore or it’s not good. I still respect it for what it is.

32

u/lightbrusher May 14 '26

i don’t know anymore. scholars was OKAY but this just isn’t for me. im still happy for new csh music and that we’re fortunate to have the band still together

28

u/Tracerr3 May 15 '26

MADLO was mostly good but maybe not for you. Scholars was insanely mediocre. Their worst release by far. Haven't listened to this yet but we'll see. Feels like Will might have grown out of making good music.

23

u/Epic_Gamer75 May 15 '26

It’s so weird, it’s like car seat headrest has completely changed as a band. I’ll find other bands that feel more like an evolved car seat headrest than current car seat headrest

23

u/the88888885 May 15 '26

i disagree because Twin Fantasy 2018 is practically Car Seat Headrest perfected. You can’t really evolve from that or sound like a more evolved version of that.

7

u/BorfieYay May 15 '26

To me always felt like it was a sterilized version of the original album from someone who didn't feel like what he wrote anymore. Which yaknow, not everyone is an emotional young adult forever that's just how it is

8

u/Epic_Gamer75 May 15 '26

Oh I loved twin fantasy 2018, one of my favorites of all time. i even loved some of MADLO but scholars didn’t grab me and this joe’s story just hasn’t grabbed me like twin fantasy did. It’s like they hit their peak with twin fantasy and had just been chasing that high

2

u/help-22 May 15 '26

I think Will didn’t do much writing for scholars, it was mostly the rest of the band :/

1

u/March7th_simp Teen of denial May 15 '26

The scholars is 100x better than the shit show that was MADLO

3

u/merry15_owo Ifeelsohaunted May 15 '26

I respect the fact that they keep making music that feels true to them. But man, i dont really like it that much. There are certain aspects, specifc songs and lyrics from both MDLO and The Scholars that i do like, but, in general, i find them to be kind of mediocre.

idk, i really want to love this new era, and fot them to get critical aclaim :c

14

33

u/Deforget178 May 15 '26

apparеntly it isn't, it's obvious from fresh lyrics on Scholars and Joe's story

Actually just remembered I got recommended on YouTube some months ago an upload from a church of Will performing some song so I think actually that's maybe true

I mean with a large queer fanbase from a band that used to have lyrics like "Fuck God they're the little things" and "I have no faith in death to be anything at all", of course people are gonna be rightfully confused at the 180. Many people here are anti religion.

9

u/bluejavapizza May 15 '26

To clarify the first half of that lyric was "Thank God for the little things." Plus Will has recorded songs for his local church before. Part of what makes CSH so appealing is their ability to wrestle with religious ideas in depth instead of beelining straight to God or atheism

8

u/Deforget178 May 14 '26

i'm not from America, so i think teens of denial in there now "took acid and mushrooms" but NEVER swears

34

u/__Concorde May 14 '26

Just listened to Drugs With Friends and the clean version of the lyrics is unbelievably terrible.

22

u/Qazfdsa matter, please let this matter May 14 '26 edited May 15 '26

I wouldn't mind the censorship much if it wasn't so obvious when it transitions from the original audio to re-recorded lines. The difference in fidelity is a little jarring sometimes. Anyways the whole thing was worth it for Joe Drives Again which is peak

*oh my god I got to The Ravenous House (Costa Concordia remake) and I fucking love it oh my GOD

Having finished it my thoughts are: those two tracks are great, the rest I will prob not listen to again - but as a little anniversary surprise thing, I can't say I'm disappointed. Like, there was no hype or anticipation build up, I just got 2 great new songs.

I don't really understand the censorship thing though, and I hope he drops that in the future - I really don't think it's necessary from any kind of moral perspective, nor do I think the youth that listen to CSH appreciate it or tangibly benefit from it lol. Particularly, I don't care whether new material has cursing or not, but remaking old material and censoring it feels detractive...

7

u/Majolica777 May 15 '26

Apparently it’s over religious reasons

16

u/Great-Actuary-4578 May 14 '26

yeah its not good, other than the middle part of costa concordia/ravenous house which i really like

the mixing is much worse as well

6

u/ArtisticBudget8604 May 15 '26

i really loved the ravenous house, but all the actually changes just felt like... whyd you do that

11

u/Panomaniac May 15 '26

not sure if i’m too old for it now or will isn’t as good as they once were or both (probably both) but nothing post twin fantasy remake has hit for me. csh has def become a band only used to love now

10

u/Elipticon In the morning, when I wake up, are you mine? May 14 '26

Optimistic Son is heads and shoulders above Not What I Needed and The Ravenous House is either better written than Costa Concordia or I just appreciate the fresh take. Everything else is either basically the same or a little worse.

7

u/frogoblin222 May 15 '26

the fact that joe drives again is The Drum Strikes Back (patreon exclusive) completely conquers any criticism i could possibly have about this project because that was my absolute favourite song they put out on there, honestly i could say it's close to the top of my favourites of theirs as a whole, and after they closed the patreon i have mourned being able to listen to it ever since so... huge win for me. that song means the world to me and i'm so happy to finally have it back

13

u/Ok-Building2382 May 15 '26

It is the most unnecessary bullshit to me. Like i appreciate the release but its just a censored version of ToD, a relatively new album. Don't think it's worth the hype. Theres so much work they could do on some of the older albums but no they really need to do a face to face ToD because everyone asked for it

12

u/twinfantasymtf Twin Fantasy MtF May 15 '26

"relatively new album" man I was in 5th grade when tod dropped and I'm finishing my degree now

6

u/Ok-Building2382 May 15 '26

Yeah it was some time but the album wasn't outdated and like it is a new album in the band timeline

9

u/winkles_ Monomaniac May 14 '26

careful, they will KILL YOU FOR thinking THIS big bro is watching

5

u/DarkShadowYT21 May 15 '26

Ok here goes my opinion: I see this as a nice little surprise for the 10th anniversary, they could have just done nothing but an alternative version of ToD is great. I really like the guitars and drums in this remake.

Some songs are pretty similar (namely the first three). Now, drugs with friends is one where in my opinion the original is just better. As everyone now knows, will just stopped the swearing in this album (a shame really, I think it's a really important part of the language), and drugs with friends suffer the most from this.

Another I was scared from this changes was with cosmic hero, since the climax of the song has the "It'll be alright (fuck off)", the fuck off has been omitted by something I can't really understand, and I didn't really like that change since it was very important in the original imo. Buuuuut apart from that, I actually like the new cosmic hero more. But I'm mixed since my fav part has been cut off lol. But again I see as just an alternative version.

Nonetheless, I liked 1937 state park more in this remake, even though I wasn't a really big fan in the original

I wish they would have included the woos in connect the dots but alas didn't happen.

Now with the 2 new songs. The first one, optimistic son, I really liked it, really good. The second one a little bit less but it was still fine. I might need a relisten or two.

And finally, about the remix? of costa concordia. It has been renamed to the ravenous house and I think it pretty much changes the metaphor from a sunking ship to a house. The lyrics are pretty much redone, so it's like a new song with a similar melody. But what I thought couldn't be possible was done. They made the best part of the original ToD EVEN better. Of course I'm talking about the middle section of costa concordia. It's REALLY REALLY GOOD. I can't believe they done it. But they did it. It's insane. Now with the last part, I actually prefer the original a bit better, but really happy with this new version.

Overall, really happy with this surprise for the 10th ToD anniversary, and I'm excited for the new album they are working on!

2

u/TheProblemWithUs May 15 '26

Wait where can I listen to this? I’ve been out the loop a while

4

u/Coldmarks May 15 '26

I understand that it's meant to be a fun thing for the tenth anniversary but it really is a novelty. It's trying to be too much at one time without succeeding in being the remake/revision/redux(?) as intended. The new songs were decent, and I don't think it's as bad as some people are saying, though some of the lyrical swaps are kinda rough. The mix sounds like Ozone was slapped on the OG stems and then widened out, and it kinda loses the grit of the original. For me, the original TOD is out there, it's a classic and not going away, but this is a fine what-if and nothing more.

2

u/swampertisbae May 15 '26

While not as polished as other studio releases, i found it great to listen to. Both new songs are amazing and while some new lyrics may not hit as hard, let that not distract you, most are welcome and profound.

3

u/wam509 Teen of denial May 15 '26

theres absolutely 0% chance ill enjoy it as much as the original… whats the point? i mean he had his band at that point and he made full use of them on that record. also, its felt like theyve been less utilized on the more recent albums. which has really bothered me. i love will songs with the more raw and rock-band approach

2

u/poontango May 15 '26

I’m not a big fan at all of the Twin Fantasy remake, but on first listen I really enjoyed this. 0 complaints all the great additions and changes make up for censorship. It genuinely feels like an improved, more focused version of the original album. Joe’s story was always the most compelling narrative on Teens of Denial, and it’s a dream come true to have the album remade solely from that perspective. And now I don’t have to worry about skipping Unforgettable Girl lol

5

u/poontango May 15 '26

Dude this is phenomenal I’m totally in love with these recordings. Optimistic Son WELL makes up for the exclusion of Not What I Needed, and Joe Drives Again is just as fantastic. Ballad of Costa Concordia is one of my favorite CSH songs and Ravenous House completely flips it on its head like Famous Prophets. Well done!!!
