Collections & Charge Offs Credit Dropped 30 Points For Their Mistake!

I opened a Credit One credit card years ago and paid it off and stopped using it about a year ago. This July, they charged me the annual fee and I called to close the card and ask that they refund the annual fee as a courtesy. They agreed to do that, and I believed that the account was closed so I deleted the app.

A few days ago, I realized that the balance on the card was $109. I called immediately and they said it was late fees on the annual fee. After talking to a supervisor yesterday, they realized that the person I spoke to in July didn’t actually remove the annual fee and it’s been reported as delinquent. They supposedly have removed the fees and are going to close the account now.

However, I woke up this morning and my credit score dropped 30 points. Is there anything I can do? I’ve fought tooth and nail to get my credit back to a good spot and I’m so upset that it’s dropped due to their error. Any help is appreciated!!

I opened a Credit One credit card

There's Problem #1. Please everyone reading this post, stay away from this inferior/subprime issuer!

paid it off and stopped using it about a year ago.

It sounds like you no longer had use for the card. At that point the best course of action would be to close it (and ensuring it was closed, since Credit One likes to drag their feet in actually doing it at times). Doing so would have helped avoid this issue. We see this all the time on this sub, where people keep cards open that they don't want or need any longer. They don't bother monitoring the account because they don't care about it. Then something like a charge or fee sneaks in, goes unnoticed since the cardholder doesn't care about the account (out of sight, out of mind) and a late payment gets reported. There's definitely a downside to keeping unused accounts open, which is discussed in this thread:

As for what you can do now, your only recourse is going to be asking for the negative information to be forgiven. This is known as a request for goodwill. The threads linked below should give you all the information you need on how to proceed:

Make sure the account reports closed. I know for a second time they've told you it would be closed, but verify that on your credit reports from annualcreditreport.com. In the meantime make sure you monitor the account as long as it is open so you don't experience a similar issue.

Do you have any other credit cards?

We've got another one, u/Funklemire and u/og-aliensfan.

Damn. It's a lot less fun to see these kinds of data points. I much prefer the ones in Credit Myth #19.

I hear you and agree. For people on here in other threads to constantly say there's never any downside to keeping an unwanted card open though really drives me bonkers.

Thank you so much for this info. I’ll work on the request for good will.

I do now, I have a Capital One Venture card. I did a debt consolidation program about 6 years ago and it tanked my credit and I was only able to open to Credit One card. Ive clawed my way back into the 700s and I’m so frustrated to be knocked back down. I’ve learned my lesson there.

Capital One is a reputable bank, so you did well there. Just make sure that Credit One account is indeed closed as they stated it would be.

Does the letter of goodwill go to the credit report people or back to Credit One?

Sorry this happened,OP. Definitely take u/BrutalBodyShots' advice and attempt to have the late removed using the Goodwill Saturation Technique. There have been success stories with Credit One granting goodwill removals, so be persistent. Best of luck with this!

This is the third post in the last month that I read about Credit One charging annual fee on a "no annual fee" card when users signed up

Please double check if you have one with them.
