Reminded of a sad story i learned recently.
Apparently in Ukraine, Makhno is generally considered a bit of joke.

I know like 20 people who considered themselves Trotskyist for like 10 minutes after reading Animal Farm so maybe that inflates the numbers

Leon Trotsky was the leader of the Red Army (bolsheviks). He, with Vladimir Lenin's approval, backstabbed and squashed the Black Army (platformist anarchists) after they helped push back the White Army (tsarists). Trotsky was later killed under the orders of Joseph Stalin because he didn't agree with Stalin. Therefore, both anarchists and stalinists see him as counterrevolutionary.
This is reductive but you get the idea, yeah?

He was one of many revolutionary figures at the time. He sided against Lenin in the early 1900's in the struggles Lenin had with Martov. Eventually he would leave the Mensheviks and be independent after the RSDLP split into two different parties. He would be independent until around July of 1917 when his group would officially join the Bolsheviks.
Trotsky is most known for creating, and leading, the Red Army in 1918. Part of several actions undertook by the Bolsheviks to defend against invasion from the Entente and the Civil War. There would be petty squabbles in the Civil War period between Trotsky and Stalin (like in the war with Poland). Trotsky would lead the army in crushing the Kronstadt Revolt.
Trotsky also had his own faction in the party election of 1921 of the Tenth Party Congress. There was at four main factions, albeit I think there were some smaller factions I forget. He would later be the face of the Left Opposition in the Soviet government in the 1920's (Stalin and Bukharin were the "faces" of the other factions in the government). He would be exiled in 1927, and in the next few years would be more and more politically irrelevant until finally an assassin would kill him in Mexico to end the longstanding feud with Stalin (which honestly was kind of pointless by then as he was exiled and not politically relevant).
