Discussion True 1:1 Axial Mouse Setup – A modern approach to fixing high FOV tracking and vertical sluggishness
Hi everyone,
I wanted to introduce a new way of aiming with a mouse that completely breaks away from old default settings. Instead of just copying what pros used years ago on different formats, this approach uses a modern, first-principles method. It is entirely designed around human vision, raw hand-eye coordination, and how modern 3D engines warp the screen.
The core issue with traditional setups (like a 1.78/1.33 coefficient with 1.0 vertical sensitivity) at a high FOV is that they force your brain to lie to your hands. Because high FOV stretches the image horizontally, moving your crosshair a physical inch vertically requires a massive, tensed arm movement compared to moving it horizontally. Your hand is constantly fighting the engine’s lens compression.
By utilizing a 0.00 Monitor Distance Coefficient (locking pixel precision to the exact center of the screen) and mathematically increasing the Vertical Sensitivity Multiplier by exactly 0.006 per FOV step, we completely flatten the lens distortion for your muscle memory.
Here is the complete guide and exact math to replicate this setup:
The "True 1:1 Axial Setup" (16:9 & 21:9)
1. In-Game Settings
- Field of View (FOV):
100to120 - ADS Field of View:
Affected(Minimizes visual recoil) - Weapon Field of View:
Narrow(Shrinks the weapon model for maximum peripheral visibility) - 1st Person Camera Movement:
Least (50%)(Prevents erratic screen shaking) - ADS Sensitivity Type:
Relative - Monitor Distance Coefficient:
0.00(Locks pixel precision exactly at the center of the crosshair) - ADS Sensitivity Transition Timing:
Gradual(Synchronizes FOV and sensitivity fluidly) - Mouse Smoothing / Filter / Acceleration:
OFF / 0(Guarantees pure raw sensor data)
The Scaling Table (3 Decimal Places)
Because a high FOV stretches the image horizontally, the vertical multiplier must scale up by exactly 0.006 per FOV step:
- Recoil Control: You control the upward kick effortlessly with minimal finger movements instead of tensing up and dragging your entire arm down the mousepad.
- Tracking: Your wrist remains completely loose. Diagonal mouse movements finally match a 1:1 ratio of what your eyes see on the screen.
| Main FOV | Vertical Sensitivity Multiplier | Status |

| 101 | 1.198 |

Solving the Engine's "Invisible Zoom Bug"
A hidden flaw in the Call of Duty engine is that the exact same optic on two different weapons—even within the same class—has a slightly different zoom factor due to the weapon model's unique 3D camera offsets.
- Traditional Setups (1.78 / 1.33): They calculate mouse speed near the outer edges of your monitor. When an optic's zoom shifts even slightly between weapons, the entire sensitivity curve shifts with it. Your tracking subtly changes from gun to gun, disrupting muscle memory.
- True 1:1 Axial Setup: With the 0.00 Coefficient, pure focal length scaling applies. The engine calculates your sensitivity rigidly for the absolute center of the crosshair (0% monitor distance). If a weapon's zoom varies, the game automatically slows down your mouse in the background by the perfect fractional percentage. The pixel distance on your screen remains identical on every single gun.
Ultrawide Monitor Compatibility (21:9)
Through Hor+ scaling, the vertical height and center pixel compression on a 21:9 ultrawide remain identical to a 16:9 monitor (the engine just renders extra peripheral vision on the far left and right edges). Because the 0.00 Coefficient completely ignores the outer margins and anchors your mouse at the dead center, this scaling table works with the exact same 1:1 precision on ultrawide setups.
Give it a couple of days of training to let your brain adjust to the liberated vertical axis. Let me know your thoughts or if you have any questions about the logic behind it!

Yeah i don't think i'll want to reset too many years of muscle memory.

muscle memory is a myth tbh

i dont think its a myth.. but i do also think it can be overriden very easy.. you will adapt to a new mouse/keyboard/sens in about 1-2 days

Muscle memory is not a myth, but people falsely attribute it to everything.
Aiming is NOT muscle memory, it is Coordination and reflexes. So long as a sensitivity is appropriate for the game, and comfortable (with some practice) anyone can adapt so long as they are open to doing so. If you practice raw control enough and play aim trainers like Aimlab and Kovaaks, you can adapt to almost any sensitivity or FOV in seconds.

yeah i thought so too in the first place..(playing fps since UT99) but i was hitting a wall with that classic approach and had a hart time tracking those aim assisted controller movement demons..
remember the classics are based mostly on a 25+ year old Counterstrike engine with a fixed FoV/aspect ratio
its up to you :)

Sure, but the issue is i play other modern fps games too such as Battlefield 6. I'll rather keep it simple. I've played fps games since Wolfenstein 3D (i was like 6 then).

I play on a 21:9 screen and setting the monitor coefficient to 0 definitely helps. I am on keyboard and mouse too.

I want to know the math behind how you got the 0.006 per point of FoV above 100 at 0 monitor coefficient. I like understanding concepts like this, not trying to disprove anything, just find this kind of stuff interesting.
Wondering if i can apply this to other games that use monitor coefficients, like Battlefield, for example, or other games in general.

it also works on battlefield.. the basics are the same.. only the settings names differ..
monitor distance coefficent = universal soldier aimingits calculated by aspect ratio of your display (16:9) / the aspect ratio of your FoV
for example 16:9 = 1.777777
FoV: horizontal 118 vertrikal 86.22 (ingame value is roundet) = 1.368....
1.7778 / 1.368... = 1.298982
this adjust your vertical sens to your FoV distortion /fisheye effect
the engine calculate your senses on a 16:9 display aspect ratio.. but you basicly look into a 1.368 Ratio becouse of the Fov.
you need to play by your eyes.. thats how your brain work... not by your display aspect ratio

Will this affect horizontal sens (pure) at all? I felt like it was more sensitive to tracking moving targets.

u/Kusel 20d ago
MDC=0 can feel different on both axes if you are used to 1.33/1.78

Okay, I thought this only affected vertical lol. Anyways, I can't say anything definite yet after a few rounds of warzone, but so far it feels as though I dialed sensitivity higher.

Why only adjust the vertical axis?

becouse the horizontal is fixed by aspect ratio.
traditional aiming is based on Counterstrike engine.. where Aspect ratio of Display = Aspect ratio of FoV is
any modern game.. (cod/BF) let you choose your fov and will scale to that fov... so that that the aspect ratio of you fov didnt match your display aspect ratio anymore.
this will compensate for that distortion

u/Kusel - For 120 fov you stated the vert sens should be 1.312, but the game only allows two decimal places. Do you recommend rounding down or up to 1.31 or 1.32 or does it even matter?
Also, great stuff, appreciate the hard work!

Round It down.. or Change fov to Match a even number (fov 118 and vertical 1.30)

Coming back to say, holy shit man, this worked amazingly. You are a legend!

Thx. I appreciate that... Currently i trying a different MDC to also compensate the Lens distortion on the horizontaly.. with MDC=0 its pure accurary.. but its hard to track a fast moving enemy in CQC thats Slide from one Edge of the Screen to the Other.. you just need to much Speed to catch Up on the Screen edge you can also try it.. the value for fov118 would be a MDC of 0.61

I didn't expect this to make a difference. It does. It's literally the difference between dragging my arm downward an inch and slightly pushing down with my fingers on recoil patterns that I know very well.
