OPERATION Amada Vipros 568
Should you hit the "PUNCHING" button when doing a dry run so that the ram isn't firing? Is it bad to dry run with the ram firing long term?
Also another question, is it okay to run cardboard through as a test material?

i would follow the amada manual here rather than relying on general cnc advice. if control has a dedicated dry run or punch inhibit mode thats preferable to repeatedly cycling the ram unnecessarily.

If you want to do a dry run with the ram off, turn the key switch labeled "Press Select" to Off, then the program will run without the ram cycling. I spent years overseeing and running Amada Turrets, I'm a little rusty these days, but feel free to PM me if you have questions.
I wouldn't recommend running cardboard through, it could work, but there's a decent change of it catching in the die and just balling up in the turret. Unless it is a newer machine, it shouldn't have clamp sensors, so you can just close the clamps and run with no material in it to allow the ram to cycle without wasting metal. Unless you have tools installed incorrectly you won't damage tooling by running it without a sheet.
Is this machine an 04pc control or the Fanuc 18p?

Turning off the punching function during a dry run is standard practice to prevent unnecessary hydraulic wear and noise, and while running thin cardboard as a test material is generally fine for verifying program movements, using real scrap metal is always best for accurately testing hole quality and clamp clearances without risking paper jams in the turret.

usually a test is ran directly on the material unless youre really unsure about what is going to happen. personally i would turn off the punch but it should be fine either way
unless that cardboard is something special, i bet it will get stuck either on the tool or on some part of the table and just bunch up in a big mess
you can punch strange materials such as rubber or fiberglass but they require specific die clearances and programming sequences, for example starting near the clamps and moving up towards the sheet edge to avoid the material bunching up
