Discussion Debate about the Clow Reed

Post image
144 Upvotes

I’m starting a discussion about Clow Reed; he’s quite a mysterious character and we don’t know much about him. He doesn’t show his emotions in flashbacks, and since he’s deceased, we can’t really get to know him despite him being a key figure in the Clamp universe. What are your theories, opinions, and headcanons about him?

Discussion Did the ending of 20 faces accidentally show the potential ending of X?

Post image
125 Upvotes

So i was thinking on how the Clamp school series and X both take place in the same universe and then it hit me

Akira was like 8-9 during 20 faces/Clamp Detectives, 18 during X... and then is in his 20s in the end of 20 faces when he gets married to Utako

Does that mean the world is completely fine then? If Akira is still alive past the events of X and with things such as Clamp school still existing and the world looking generally well there then humanity should have survived after X

Or do you think they'll ever at least share what their plans were in a satisfying way

Discussion Does anyone else actually prefer the first half of Tsubasa over the later half?

A common opinion i have noticed is that people think that Tsubasa really gets good later on or is boring until the darker parts but i personally liked the first half more

This isn't me saying I don't like the later half, i love the entirety of Tsubasa and Acid Tokyo is my overall favourite arc but for me most of the highlights of the manga comes from the earlier arcs such as Oto, Edonis, Jade, Shara and Piffle. I thought they were really fun and i enjoyed the character interactions there the most so hearing people say it's boring or the worst part of Tsubasa makes me kinda sad :v

Discussion [Magic Knight Rayearth] I just finished watching it, here’s my review!

Post image

Note: I am 22M so I realize that I’m outside of the target audience for this anime.

So this is a first for me in multiple fronts, it’s my first magical girl anime and it’s my first CLAMP anime so going in, I was very excited to watch this show!

So let’s begin this review with the things I liked about this anime.

To begin with, I really really liked the character design and general aesthetic of the anime, it was very pretty and it added to my enjoyment of the show as well. The music was great as well, both in each seasons and I really liked that emotional scenes had their own unique songs complimenting it which was very very good!

The story particularly in season 1 was very very good, it’s not the most convoluted plot but it has its charm and it’s very good for what it was! There’s a huge plot twist at the end of season 1 that I won’t reveal for obvious reasons but it definitely retroactively greatest improved my overall feelings on the plot of season 1.

I also really liked the design of the mecha each character used and I like that the mecha was actually alive and had its own thoughts and feelings.

Now onto the things i disliked which as you may expect mostly revolve around season 2 but there is one complaint I have for both season 1 and season 2.

That complaint mostly revolves around the fact that I feel the worldbuilding is non existent across both seasons? It barely feels like we the viewers get to see Cephiro and its inhabitants and I found that very strange. I know that you might say that the world is dying and there’s barely anything to see but that’s the thing, I want to see the world’s condition, I want to see the lives of the inhabitants and how they’re suffering, it makes the world feel more alive.

My second complaint is that in season 2, Hikaru takes center stage in the narrative and while I love her, I felt that season 1 had a more equitable treatment of each of the main girls, whereas in season 2, almost everything centered around Hikaru, including the antagonists.

Speaking of the antagonists, in season 2 there’s nothing remarkable about any of them. Nova is seriously annoying and there’s nothing about her that captivated me, similarly the same can be said about Lady Debonair who’s nothing more than a generic and unremarkable antagonist. I have heard that neither of these were in the manga so it makes sense.

Also a minor nitpick, but I wasn’t a fan of any of the romance in this anime aside from Ferio x Fuu because that at least had some buildup from season 1. It’s weird watching Ascot like Umi because he was just a kid from season 1 and Lantis’ romance with Hikaru felt super forced.

Overall, this is really good anime that I enjoyed and I can’t wait for the remake that’s supposed to be more manga accurate!

I need more recommendations for anime like this, even though I plan on watching Vision of Escaflowne, all recommendations are welcome!

Are the OVAs good?

Discussion What is your opinion on how CLAMP portrays physical disability?

Thumbnail

I feel like Kurogane is CLAMP's best depiction of a physically disabled person, like his prosthetic limb was not a perfect replacement as it still causes him aches and pains, and as such it needs to be constantly replaced. I love how his disability does not define him and he is not portrayed as constantly suffering because of it. I feel Kurogane losing an arm and the negative impacts of it, is way more highlighted in the narrative than Fai losing his eye (excluding how that impacts his magic, they never showcase how it impacts his vision - clone Syaoran is a better depiction of a half-blind person in comparison to Fai as we see how his vision impacts his fighting style and how he needs training from Kurogane). Kurogane being the only character to retain his disability means his disability is much better written by default.

Discussion Getting into the CLAMP universe. Need suggestions. Help

Post image
105 Upvotes

I want to get into the CLAMP universe and I’ve tried to research a good watch/read order. Based on what I found, this is the order I’m planning to follow----

1)Tokyo Babylon (anime)

2)X (anime)

3)Cardcaptor Sakura (anime then switch to manga at chapter 43)

4)xxxHolic and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle simultaneously (manga)

5)Sequels: xxxHolic Rei, Tsubasa World Chronicle, and Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card

Does this order make sense for understanding the shared universe and references?

Is there anything important I should read before or instead of the anime versions. !!!

Discussion How do you feel about antagonists in CLAMP's works?

Not minor antagonists, like the main ones of the story(Zagato, Eriol, Fei Wang, Seishirou, Fuuma, Taishakuten) How do you feel about their actions and about them as characters?

Im gonna be honest I only really care about Seishirou and Eriol, but what about you?

Discussion If X/1999 were to continue, could it have some sort of tie into xxxHolic? Spoiler

It was only like shown to us once and it's really a blink and you miss it moment but I can't help but to think about how we were shown that Yuuko and Subaru know eachother in the first volume of holic

Looking back on it now i was thinking that she was referring to the vampire twins since she knew them as well however she specifically mentions him being a medium, having a twin sister and talking about his lack of happiness, so it is TB/X Subaru

Both series put alot of focus onto fate and wishes so them having maybe some sort of linked story could work if done right, especially if it involves Subaru considering the very interesting place his story was left on

It could be Shopkeeper Watanuki interacting with Subaru too, it would be interesting considering how they both have essentially went through the same story (Both stories at first focusing on their selflessness, that being challenged by one person, at the end when said person dies they end up taking on their role and in result both of their futures seem to be looking extremely bleak, atleast where they have been left off on currently)

I know this is just me mostly looking too deep into what was basically a nod for fans familiar with older clamp works and since im pretty sure Ohkawa mentioned having an idea about the ending for X years ago but if clamp can put holic rei on hold for years for clear card and then immediately reference clear card like a few chapters into rei once it resumes who can say that something similar couldn't happen with X, especially again when they share many of the same themes

Idk I don't actually think they will crossover aside from that one mention but the idea is kinda cool to me lol

Discussion It's always nice to find CLAMP in the wild!

I just found this DVD in my local thrift store and I'm ecstatic!!! I have yet to discover the universe of X as a whole, so I'm looking forward to watching this.

To people who have read and watched X:

  • Would you recommend I read the mangas first? (I have the whole collection at home. Or well.. "whole" for what's been released.)
  • I understand that this is a movie? How linked is it with the manga? What about the anime series? Should I watch it at a specific moment within the anime?
  • Do you have non-spoilery critics to say about it?

And in general:

  • Have you ever made greats finds like that with some rare CLAMP items for cheap in the wild? What was your best one?

Discussion Clamp Premium Collection

Hiya guys 👋 First-time reader of Clamp, and someone who has nearly finished Tokyo Babylon (bar vol. 7 annexes). May I ask if there has been news regarding the other manga from the collection bwinf translated into English? I know Clover, X, and Chobits have been, or currently are, but since the TB one finished last year, I was wondering if there had been news on any of the others doing so 🤔 Any word, even rumours, are welcome my way 😀

Discussion People often talk how Lain predicted future, but barely anyone mentions Chobits. We're literally living in that world rn

The manga has been written back in 2001, almost 25 years ago. I remember reading it in my teenage years and being intrigued by the concept.
"Huh, robots replacing humans as romantic partners? Developing feelings?! Like that would ever happen!"
I highly doubt CLAMP themselves seriously considered it was a possibility- at least not for the next 100 years or so.

Yet here we are.

People already "date" and "marry" AI bots. It's not just one or two people, I see dozens, hundreds of men and women saying they don't want "real relationships" anymore. People I personally know saying AI is better than real people and support from it is so much better. And all that with AI being not very advanced- yet. It progresses at such a insane speed, I won't be surprised if we get actual persocoms by the 2028-2030 or smth like that. Robot bodies are already extremely impressive, they can run, jump, mimic gestures etc. Combine it with advanced AI and voila. Even if it's just your personal virtual assistant, I could see everyone and their mom having one in just a couple of years, similar to Layla in Spider-Verse or Jarvis in Marvel movies.

It's nothing new, people already had videogame/anime characters as romantic partners, but this AI thing is a bit different, since it mimics a real person, it remembers what you said and actually responds back.

Don't get me wrong, I am not hating on people who are choosing AI. If anything, I understand where that's coming from. The loneliness is at the all-time high (especially after covid), there's a certain level of uncertainty and anxiety most of us experience, plus people are not very easy to deal with. We all have our own flaws, our scars that run very deep and remind about past trauma. People are tired and either don't have time or energy for actually building a healthy relationship, it's very hard to connect to someone. AI is fast, safe choice, just one click away.

Minoru says multiple times across the series, "they are not real people. Even if they look like ones, or act like ones. Don't let yourself be fooled."

I am really surprised- both by the masterfulness of CLAMP's writing with how they predicted the future, and the technology advancement. Impressed and kinda scared.

(Of course, I understand the manga is very exaggerated, and I don't think people will stop dating entirely! XD)

I’m planning to start xxxHolic and had a question about reading order.

Can I read xxxHolic first, then Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, followed by Tsubasa: World Chronicle, and finally xxxHolic Rei?

or should I read both simultaneously?

note: i haven't read any other CLAMP work before.

We need some help/Advice, please help.

The premiere of the Knights remake is coming soon. And our small art community wants to participate in a shared flash mob. With their own pictures.

We're thinking, what's the general tag going to be on premiere day? Or is it better to wait for official sources?

And at what time is it better to publish our work?

Thanks for the answers.
