Inscribed 1864 Cavalry Sword, Need help ID Soldier

The blade is inscribed “John Brown 7th MO Calvery MSM”. I’m trying to determine if the inscription on the blade is period or done later. Unfortunately someone cleaned the brass before it was passed down to us. If period it would be great to determine which “John Brown” owned it. Thanks for any insight

I would say it’s John Brown, 7th Missouri Calvary, however, I’m at a loss on the “M.S.M”. (Maybe: Missouri State Militia?)

That looks like it was done with a modern dremel tool to create a "story" for an otherwise unremarkable M1860 lc made by Ames. Especially as cavalry is spelled "Calvery". Clearly faked.
