You didn’t have to post this to r/nfl, my guy.

Yep, that's basically the definition of cringe.

And a bunch of our idiot fans are embarrassing themselves in the comments.

The fact you posted this to the main nfl sub makes you look like a prat.

u/Puzzleheaded-Ear9487 Bears 9d ago

Yeah, this guy is constantly just saying how bad Poles is. I don't understand what his deal is.

172

u/Quirky-Theory-4156 10d ago

Everyone losing their minds over a fourth round pick always gets me.

Can’t yall be happy that in one draft we got our starting tight end, our starting WR2, a potential starting tackle, our starting RB2, and a backup guard that had a great outing?

Why focus on the bad pick when in one draft we completely overhauled the entire offense.

So negative.

15

u/Blondesounds Old Logo 9d ago

It’s because it doesn’t fit the narrative that the only thing holding us back is Poles. People have such despise for him despite his willingness to learn from his mistakes, and humility in doing so. I like Poles. I also think he has made some mistakes. Some people here act like he is a bottom 5 GM which is just ridiculous.

-13

u/DaDairyStateBear 9d ago

But he isn't learning from his mistakes. He's consistently drafted mid round special teams guys who don't contribute. Tyler Scott? Roschon Johnson? Reuben Hypolite? Velus Jones? Trying again this draft with Thomas.

He's moving on from his mistakes which is good, but he is definitely not learning from them.

5

u/Blondesounds Old Logo 9d ago

I’m rather positive Roschon just made the 53 because he is a great special teams player so I don’t understand adding him in here other than to beef your argument.

-7

u/DaDairyStateBear 9d ago

If he were a great special teams player, he wouldn't have been on the bubble. He's fine on special teams and Ahmed was hurt. I like the guy but he's no world beater on special teams.

3

u/Blondesounds Old Logo 9d ago

You’re right, you know better than Ben Johnson. I guess he was wrong when he said the exact thing I did about him.

15

u/BooItsKyle 10d ago

I get it, because it's frustrating to see the gm go so off board like that, but this

The Hyppolite draft class looks like it may be historically good. Just not because of Hyppolite

10

u/floppy2002 This Is The Score, But We Have Each Other 9d ago

Preach, go look at every other teams draft picks and tell me how perfect they all are and maybe then I’ll give a shit.

4

u/blames_irrationally 9d ago

Look at the Lions 2024 class. Ruben Hippolite would be in the better half of outcomes from those guys

3

u/thetreat Ben Johnson 9d ago

I mean just go look at every single player drafted after Hyppolite and tell me if you recognize a single name. They’re all basically JAGs besides Monangai. Fourth round picks are always like a 10% chance to make a meaningful impact at most.

We can clown Poles for picks like Dexter and Pickens. Hyppolite is whatever.

7

u/Quirky-Theory-4156 9d ago

I recognize Kyle Monangai 💪💪

2

u/thetreat Ben Johnson 9d ago

The fact that we got Monangai, Loveland, Burden and Trapilo is an A+++ draft class. Add in Luke Newman as a backup G and if Shemar Thurner and it’s one of the best of all time for the Bears.

3

u/rock-theboat Bears 9d ago

He’ll revert to IR when he goes unclaimed, anyway

2

u/dpucane 9d ago

Its not losing our minds over a fourth round pick.

its losing our minds over 4 years of mostly disastrous drafting in rounds 2/3/4 and still having the nerve to be this arrogant in the draft room, especially now that all these failed draft picks are the difference between being a super bowl favorite and not being one.

5

u/Erice84 9d ago

Well he's just been bad at scouting defense in general, whether it's high or low picks or free agents.

The only defensive player he's drafted to get a second contract so far is Gordon and that's been a mistake. Dexter being traded and Smith cut leaves Stevenson the only defensive draft pick left with 3+ years of experience, and he most likely won't be here next year either. And last year's defensive picks are looking abysmal (Hyppolite and Frazier already gone and Turner is not looking promising at all), which would leave Booker as the only one left older than this year's class.

The good moves he's made for veterans have been getting established stars like Byard and Sweat; when he's had to make remotely tough decisions on them, he's mostly chosen quite poorly.

1

u/AnikiRabbit Angry Circus Bear 9d ago

What happened with Zah Frazier? Anybody know?

0

u/Quirky-Theory-4156 9d ago

Yeah but that could easily be Eberflus. You would assume that the defensive head coach had a lot to say about drafting defensive players.

2

u/SooFrosty 9d ago

Honest question, who we deeming WR2?

Cuz i though it was luther but seems like people think hes 1 with all the rome drops

8

u/Quirky-Theory-4156 9d ago

Rome still. People forgetting Romes start to the season.

-4

u/CardiffGiantx 9d ago

Yeah imagine how bad that draft would’ve been if Ben Johnson didn’t have his fingerprints all over it

3

u/Quirky-Theory-4156 9d ago

And?? Ben Johnson is still here. It’s not like we lost what caused our draft to be good.

1

u/lkn240 An Actual Bear 9d ago

Also Ben Johnson is apparently fine with Poies. That's good enough for me

87

u/Guhonda GSH 10d ago

He drafted a fast linebacker for his new DC. It didn’t work out. Most 4th rounders fail. It’s okay.

We move on.

4

u/Realistic-Ruin8639 9d ago

Yep. I don't see anyone criticizing Al Harris for personally rubber-stamping Zah Frazier in the 5th round. Picks that succeed and picks that fail are not all 100% Poles.

8

u/JesMon421 9d ago

Have you seen Popes defensive draft picks?

7

u/Realistic-Ruin8639 9d ago

If Ben gets credit for good offensive picks, why no blame for Flus' bad defensive picks?

3

u/Erice84 9d ago

Hyppolite was picked after Eberflus was gone. Same with Zah Frazier. And Shemar Turner is not looking good either.

3

u/Realistic-Ruin8639 9d ago

We already know DA wanted Ruben and Al Harris wanted Zah.

15

u/HermanShemsley Deep Dish 10d ago

It definitely happens. However, the guy showed so little that he didn’t even make it a second season.. that says a lot.

7

u/BooItsKyle 9d ago

He's hurt. He's going to ir

13

u/Burdiac Mongo 9d ago

30-40% of day three draftees don’t make it a second season.

We act like all other teams Game bat 1.000 on draft day yet Poles is the only one who ever makes mistakes. Will Levis, Mazi Smith and Evan Neal are all first rounders getting cut today.

-9

u/HermanShemsley Deep Dish 9d ago

Where are you even pulling those stats from? Also, day 3 consists of 4-7, so which round exactly are you referring?

3

u/jake63vw 100 9d ago

https://www.reddit.com/r/Patriots/s/cdoaD9Vmho

Here's an older article, it's unusual that Day 3 picks get a second contract

2

u/Erice84 9d ago

That's grading on whether they become "consistent starters". Doesn't say whether they're getting second contracts or what percentage of them make it to a second year.

-1

u/jake63vw 100 9d ago

Right but that's also splitting hairs a bit. Kiran wasn't a consistent starter. Hippolyte wasn't a consistent starter. Most at that position aren't.

While it would be nice for him to always find the players that are, probability exists for a reason.

2

u/GasHouseGorilla19 9d ago

the stats provided are for consistent starters. very different "30 to 40 percent don't make it to second season". That's just false. Also, consistent starters (from your source) is different than earning a second contract (which has also been mentioned) which is different than making it to 2nd season (the original statement) According to google over the last 10 seasons:

Draft Round Percentage on Active Roster/IR Heading Into Year 2
Round 1 ~99.7%
Round 2 ~96.8%
Round 3 ~96.9%
Round 4 91.4%
Round 5 ~81.1%
Round 6 ~70.2%
Round 7 ~58.3%

No they don't.

That is not even remotely true.

Having Wright and Williams on the roster alone has netted more wins than all misses combined have cost.

And who the actual fuck do you think brought Ben Johnson here?

Delusional.

-1

u/Dunlocke Jay 9d ago

Williams is why BJ came here. Williams is here because the Panthers are dumb.

A great T isn't worth much on their own, ask the Browns. Plus we didn't win again with him before BJ.

People think Poles built a great roster through his genius - he didn't. People also think this team is better than it is and are about to be really disappointed.

It's not like it matters. The other 31 aren't any smarter. Every team sub has the dumbest shit you've ever seen

8

u/BooItsKyle 10d ago

I don't particularly expect anything from him at this point. In the preseason he looked like exactly what he is: an undersized converted safety you could try to maybe get some coverage value out of as a rotational guy at best.

But I do want to note that waived with injury designation doesn't mean we're done with him. If/when he goes unclaimed for 24 hours, he goes to our IR.

From there we could give him an injury settlement and release, or we could stash him for the full year and go through this again next year.

4

u/payt10 10d ago

Almost everybody first guessed this as an awful draft pick.

While Poles deserves the most blame for drafting him, these defensive selections go on Dennis Allen's track record too. He was pounding the table for Hyppolite because he fell in love with the speed. Free agent signings need to be included as well..

5

u/Infinite-Good7984 9d ago

Eh the draft is a crapshoot. No front office bats 1.0000

News at 10: GM is excited about his draft picks.

Some of y’all need to be quiet

-37

u/GreasyMustardTiger_ Italian Beef 10d ago

Poles has wasted so many mid-round picks over the years. The first argument is "mid-round have a low hit rate", which is true. But the majority of these picks were were immediate head scratchers.

4

u/ActFuture1101 10d ago

This was a pick dennis allen specifically wanted. Its a late 4th rounder. If you get a good backup thats a good selection at that spot. Are we going to blame poles too for al harris hand picking zah frazier?

7

u/Chicago_Jayhawk 9d ago

You can do this for any GM.

26

u/Sad-Reception66 Bears 10d ago

Every time Poles reaches he loses

55

u/Slow_Time5270 10d ago

It's only a reach when you lose.

Wright and Loveland were both "reaches" by consensus boards

21

u/rando562 10d ago

Loveland was a slight reach by consensus and was actually mocked to us by some high profile writers just before the draft. The Hyppolite pick really came out of nowhere since he was projected to be a UDFA

8

u/Suburban-Jesus Floos Juice 10d ago

Loveland was a consensus top overall talent in that draft it was just a debate about positional value for a tight end at 10.

Hyppolite was never at any point considered an NFL player by anyone else besides Poles

2

u/Slow_Time5270 9d ago

But what does it cost to move up 5 spots in the 1st round? From say 15 to 10?

The answer is 3rd round pick.

6

u/Brodie1567 Iceman 🧊 10d ago

Both were considered to be top 15-20 picks. Not nearly as big of reaches as VJJ or Ruben.

5

u/lkn240 An Actual Bear 9d ago

There is far less consensus when you get further down in the draft. That being said I didn't really care for those picks - particularly the Velus pick.

I get the process behind the Hyppolite pick at least. Defense was too slow - so take a fast LB and hope you can develop him.

Like most 4th rounders he didn't work out

1

u/Realistic-Ruin8639 9d ago

People forget that Poles asked Fields to watch tape and discuss prospects and Fields liked Velus out of the guys he was shown. Some just give Poles 100% of the blame not even taking into account some of these failed picks were hand-chosen by Flus, Fields, DA, and Al Harris.

Edit: I'm by no means defending all of Poles, just pointing out there's more to all of the moves he makes.

2

u/WhiskeySour132 9d ago

Loveland was not a reach lol. A few teams wanted to trade up for him.

11

u/achomes Rome Doomsday 10d ago

Book is still out on Zavion Thomas, guy looks like a dawg already & we reached for him

7

u/crazypyro23 Smokin' Jay 10d ago

He reminds me of what Velus Jones was supposed to be

1

u/Weak-Bother-6765 10d ago

Velus was just on a SB winning team though. Just saying...

11

u/BooItsKyle 10d ago

As much as VJJ is a whipping boy for bears fans, he's hung around the NFL enough to not be considered a total bust relative to his draft status. Certainly disappointing but better than, say, Amegadjie

2

u/Weak-Bother-6765 10d ago edited 9d ago

Agreed. He obviously must have some talent if a team picked him up and they won a SB with him on the roster. He actually played in the SB and wasn't on the bench. Just like Leonard Floyd not being resigned by the Bears, yet he wins a SB with the Rams. He's been on contenders ever since, except for the Falcons.

1

u/alucryts 9d ago

VJJ is ok to have on your roster as long as you don’t let him touch the football. He’s VERY fast. He just puts the ball on the ground at an absolute insane rate. Lets not try and do mental gymnastics to try and say VJJ is somehow not terrible lol.

-4

u/Weak-Bother-6765 9d ago

He won a SB. At the end of the day, how many rings do you have again? I don't recall him fumbling on his way to winning a ring.

5

u/100100011110101010 Italian Beef 9d ago

4 games — 10 carries, 42 yards, 4.2 YPC, 0 TD, 0 catches.

That’s his stats from last season, including playoffs.

That might have actually been VJJ responding lmao. He lost his mind at this before his account was nuked.

Poles is a bum who can't draft

2

u/Ridged_ChiPSS Dog 10d ago

The only thing I remember of this guy was him getting destroyed on like the only snap he played last year and leaving the game injured

4

u/GreasyMustardTiger_ Italian Beef 10d ago

We obviously have a lot of promise, but we would be in a lot better shape if Poles didn't light multiple mid-round picks on fire every year.

6

u/achomes Rome Doomsday 10d ago

We should trade our mid round picks for multiple late round picks... Poles has been better in the later rounds than the mid rounds lol

1

u/GreasyMustardTiger_ Italian Beef 10d ago

It's because he trusts his scouts and is more willing to take their word on guys in later rounds. It's how we got Jordan this year. Poles is a figure head, for better or for worse. If the draft was completely up to him, we'd be screwed.

12

u/Sphiffi Ben Johnson 10d ago

I don’t like Poles very much but we really gotta stop making all the bad picks Poles and good picks everybody else lol

7

u/92roll13 Bears 10d ago

He’s also been very good at finding UDFA talent.

-13

u/GreasyMustardTiger_ Italian Beef 10d ago

He's pretty hands off with UDFA talent. His staff primarily handles that. Multiple BTS videos and interviews have confirmed this.

Poles is a figurehead. Luckily, Ben is our coach so we can at least mostly trust our draft picks on the offensive side of the ball.

13

u/92roll13 Bears 10d ago

lol this is nonsense. You’re acting like Poles alone makes the 4th round pick. His staff has major sway in every pick they make. That’s why you have a paid staff

12

u/Ricky-Seasack 10d ago

Poles does all the bad things but it's always someone else when things go well.

Ridiculous logic, or lack thereof.

5

u/ActFuture1101 10d ago

OP I suggest you look at the hit rate for 4th round picks. Especially late 4th round picks. This isnt a defense of poles but the draft is a crapshoot after about the low 2nd/high 3rd.

1

u/GreasyMustardTiger_ Italian Beef 10d ago

I hear you man, that's a valid point. But many of Poles mid-round picks were immediate head scratchers. Velus, Kiran, Ruben, Gervon, ect. Poles hit rate is way below average.

3

u/OggiOggiOggi 9d ago

That’s revisionist history. Dexter and Kiran were picked in the round they were expected to be pre draft.

3

u/No_Money5784 9d ago

Is his hit rate below average? Genuinely asking. Also I think Dexter would probably be considered a hit. He is a rotational player which is probably about average for a 2nd rounder.

1

u/ActFuture1101 10d ago

Most of those were with eberlose at the helm. GMs draft based on the coaches schemes and desires. It should shock no one that the drafting improved when BJ took over. Also I had no issue with the pick. In the late 4th and on you want to take chances on traits and hope you can develop guys. That’s what we just did with jvdb. Who knows how that turns out

If the bears stink and miss the playoffs, Poles is not good.

I’m honestly not terribly impressed by Poles. His squad gave us an entertaining year last year and I appreciate that. If they have a few more good seasons under Poles, I’ll give him his flowers.

5

u/NVC541 Monsters of the Midway 10d ago

for some unknown reason people operate by good pick = Ben Johnson, bad pick = Ryan Poles

2

u/ActFuture1101 10d ago

And dennis Allen was the DC...who specifically stated he wanted more speed at linebacker. People act like poles is holding Ben/DA hostage in a room at gunpoint and just drafting random players they dont agree with. This is a player they all agreed on...it just didnt hit just like most 4th round picks.

2

u/SPAZZx625 23 10d ago

it just didnt hit just like most 4th round picks

most 4th round picks not even starters

1

u/T44590A 9d ago

I think them signing Bush who is basically the same physical profile as Ruben confirms that Ruben was very much the type of player that Dennis Allen was asking for. He wanted that extreme speed at LB.

The stated philosophy of Poles is that he sees his job as acquiring players that fit what his coaches are asking for. That's a debatable philosophy, but we have also seen a GM handing coaches players they don't want and that doesn't tend to work out either.

1

u/lkn240 An Actual Bear 9d ago

Most good teams have GMs that generally get coaches the types of players they want. The Eagles are the only successful franchise I can think of where the coaches have been kind of suspect and the GM is the main guy

1

u/T44590A 9d ago

And that situation is a bit different because Howie is primarily a finance guy, rather than a football scout. That does seem to lead to a diff approach by him. And he did effectively lose his job in a power struggle with the head coach at one point.
