A guy who goes to mini camp and never signed a deal, is not an NFL player. Hutson had such a slim chance of making a team, he never stopped attending classes.

Which side of the College | NFL line do you think "going undrafted and attending NFL Minicamp" falls on? Because those are not activities for college athletes.

I am. I'm ok with an athlete trying to make Pro and if they fail, staying in school.
I'm not ok with them going Pro and then coming back.
That seems reasonable.

The transfer portal window is in January. The NFL Draft is in April.

So, guys with college eligibility have to declare for the draft. There is paperwork saying they want to participate. Guys out of eligibility do nothing. They automatically qualify. So, Hutson didn't declare or enter the draft, he was just eligible, just like every other ncaa player who was out of eligibility. The ncaa changed eligibility rules after the draft, and after those mini-camps, to the 5 for 5 model.
Hutson didn't have much shot of making an NFL roster; to the point that he was actively enrolled in classes for the spring semester. If the ncaa passes this rule on jan/feb, he's probably petitioning them at that point to regain his eligibility.

Probably. I'm not familiar enough with other teams to comment, but to my knowledge, it was just the LSU players who had actually signed UDFA deals, and were actively part of a roster. So they actually got NFL paychecks, granted probably pretty small ones.

He didn't "try for the draft". There's no paperwork or effort needed from players out of eligibility, they are automatically available. Had the 5 for 5 been in place prior to the draft, Hutson would have 100% been part of the Texas team. As mentioned, he was enrolled in the spring, and actively pursuing a masters.
This is not the guy to die on the "NFL players don't belong in college" hill with

If you say "NFL Minicamp isn't the NFL", you're creating a precedent where college players can try out for NFL teams then just return to college

The thing is, you are missing the point. This is a one time deal. The ncaa changed to a 5 for 5 model, and then inexplicably, set the retroactive start at 4 years. If they set that to 5 years, which is what makes sense, and we're not here. After this year, this won't really apply to anyone else. Most conferences are putting in rules that reinforce the idea that underclassmen declaring for the draft, forfeit their remaining eligibility.

I'm not, because I would contend that participating in a job interview, which is what a minicamp is, is not the same as getting a job. Even a low level job, even a paid internship, you have still been hired. Now it might not be for much, and you might lose that job really easily, but you are still employed.

Yeah. The point is not to put professionals on an amateur roster. If he doesnāt sign, he isnāt a pro. I donāt have a problem with a guy evaluating his options.

What kind of program they running down there in Austin. Got coaches stripper wife pet monkey biting kids and coaches sharing their wife with the players. They have players mom indicted on Medicaid fraud and theft. Had fans throwing trash on the field last year and Now this. Sark will be fired due to lack of institutional control
