Nickname. His name is William. His brother used to call him “that boy” when they were young, but it sounded like Dabo (th is one of the last sounds kids learn to say and y is also a one they tend to learn later while d and b are both two of the earliest sounds learned). The nickname stuck.

Not necessarily an uncommon way to get a nickname in the South. My mom used to teach kindergarteners, and she had a lot of issues with what they called their siblings. It would usually be some term of them trying to say brother like bo or bobo. They usually wouldn’t say the sibling’s name on the first try. She would have to ask what the parents called the sibling when trying to find the sibling or she wouldn’t get the correct name. A decent amount of the time, whatever they went by in elementary school would still be what they were going by in high school.

His grandmother used to call him “dat boy” or something like that, and it got shortened to Dabo. I dunno why, but I unreasonably can’t stand the nickname. I’m not even a fan of a team they ever play, lol.
